Did Kenny Chesney Really Play Tootsies?

Posted: November 11th, 2008 at 1:53 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Kenny ChesneyI feel like I'm being punked. Except that Ashton Kutcher's not here. I mean, did Kenny Chesney really play an impromptu concert last night at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge in Nashville? Chesney, of gigantic arena sell-out fame, in a teeny, tiny venue like that, must've been incredible. The show was scheduled to start at 9:30 p.m. in the upstairs bar. I just can't see it. How long did people wait in line to get in? How crowded was it? And was it mostly industry types, or did his fans get in on the action? What songs did he play? Was Kid Rock really there, or was that just wishful-thinking gossip?

not gossip. Played until almost 1 am. His songs and covers, including a lot of Bob Marley. Great show, but really crowded (with “regular fans”)!

Yes, he really did and it wasn’t just industry people. Anyone who could get in the door could go! It started at 10:30 and it was packed! There are pictures to prove it! LOL =)

It’s true! I was directly in front of him, the Wailers, and Kid Rock!!! He did a very unscripted “honky tonk” show that was fabulous!

I was there right in the front of all the action. It was the best concert I have seen thus far in my life. it was three straight hours of kenny chesney on stage. don’t know what would have made it a better night.

It didn’t make sense. Why would Kenny Chesney play U2 covers at Tootsies? That would be like going to Memphis and recording a disco song at Sun Studios.

Kid Rock was great. I don’t listen to his records but respect his talent as an entertainer.. and he’s got good taste in music.

Mark Collie also got up on stage.. I suppose most people were too drunk at that point to notice. But, again, if you’ve got Mark Collie on stage.. why cover a Tim McGraw song? It’s Mark F’n Collie.. how about covering Haggard or Cash with him on stage..? But, Tim McGraw? Unreal.

It’s still nice to see guys on Chesney’s level play a honky tonk.. but to turn a honky tonk into a reggae party seemed out of place.. and I’m sure Faron Young and the Wilburn Brothers were turning over in their graves.

    King -
So let me get this straight…

Kenny Chesney, who sells out 60,000 seat stadiums show after show after show, decides to throw an impromptu jam session at a Nashville landmark, invites his fans, plays for over 3 hours, is joined by Kid Rock and The FREAKIN’ Wailers, and you’re going to complain about his song selection?! Unbelievable!!

Maybe next time he’ll have the jam session at his house - which he could have very well done - that way the fans won’t be able to attend and the public will never know about it. Would that be better?

Give the guy some credit - and a lot of it - and tell me the last time a superstar of caliber did something like this. I think it speaks volumes of Kenny’s character, his love for playing music, his appreciation for the fans, and his dedication to GOOD MUSIC (no matter if it’s Kid Rock, The Wailers, U2, Tim McGraw, George Strait, etc.)

If you’re complaining about that night of music, I’d hate to have to buy you a Christmas present - you’d probably complain about receiving a $1 million check because it wrapped in the wrong wrapping paper!

Not everybody is so ga-ga over Chesney and his drunken get togethers. Kenny so loves being the center of attention. But I for one would not complain if I got a million dollar check and you wouldn’t even have to wrap it!

Also.. comparing seeing a more “private” Kenny Chesney show like at Tootsies to receiving a $1 million dollar check makes no sense. How old are you? 13? That’s most certainly the worst analogy ever put into words.

If Kenny wanted to put on a free concert for me he could sing the alphabet for all I care.

Oops, sorry - obviously that was from me, not King - must be my 11-13 year old mentality.

I was there it was the most awesome thing. If you weren’t there you can’t appreciate it. I came to Nashville for a short getaway and did except to have that much fun. I have pics, plus some people were there videoing the whole thing. I am so glad I had my camera with me.

If I could luck up on concerts like that, it would be worth moving to Nashville, TN. Plus, it is a very nice town to visit because of all the history.

Not to start anything…but I DVR’d or TIVO’d the CMA’s and just watched it Thursday night. At the end, when Kenny was standing up to go receive his award, there is an older, bald guy (Vince Gill was next to him), that was directly behind Kenny. He wore some gold rings and I believe was wearing a black suit and tie…Kenny looked at him and the guy looked back like he wanted to hug him, but then backed off, like maybe Kenny didn’t want him to. It was very strange, very weird how this guy LOOKED at Kenny, almost with like puppy dog eyes and longing for some kind of PDA!! Anyway, was just wondering if anyone else noticed this?

Yes, I did. That was probably one of Kenny’s lovers.

I didn’t notice that but did noticed his dad give him a big bear hug. I thought it was very sweet. You could tell his dad was proud of him.

We were there that weekend, partied all night at Tootsies, saw several big namers around and entering the Ryman including Kevin Costner - I even got a picture with Tanya Tucker on her Harley!!!! My girlfriends and I wanted to stay just one more night - hell, we could call in sick. We were just gonna hang out at Legends/and or Tootsies just to see what would happen. Damn husbands made us go home. I am a HUGE Kenny Chesney fan, and I love Kid Rock. The lesson here ladies - to hell with what the hubbies say and party on!!!! I can’t believe I missed it by just a few hours. For those of you that saw the concert of a life time - lucky you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Next year - I’m staying through Monday, instead of going home the Sunday before the CMAs - lesson well learned!!!!!
