Kevin Costner and Modern West Play Nashville

Kevin Costner and Modern WestKevin Costner and his band, Modern West, are performing Monday night (Nov. 10) at The Stage, a honky-tonk on lower Broadway in downtown Nashville, and again Tuesday evening outside Nashville's Sommet Center for a free concert calling attention to Wednesday's CMA Awards show taking place inside the arena. However, the gig they had Saturday night (Nov. 8) was one Costner wasn't sure about accepting -- the Grand Ole Opry.

During a Monday morning visit to CMT's offices, the Academy Award winner talked about his reluctance to accept the invitation.

"Everybody should get a chance to have that feeling that I had," he said. "But if you want it, you've got to know that it's rolled up in a little bit of terror, tremendous nerves. There's a lot that could go wrong, but there's just as much that can go right."

An Opry appearance never figured into the plans when Costner and Modern West recorded Untold Truths, their new album to be released Tuesday.

"I just wanted to play music with my friends again," he said. "I wanted to play original music, and I wanted to see where that took us. ... In a way, it's the way I handled my acting career. I never went to the Oscars in my head. I never went to the premieres in my head. I just said, ‘Could I make a living doing this?' I wanted to do the work. And that's really what happened with the music, too. It's a mystery how we got there [the Opry] because it wasn't something I lobbied for."

Costner received the invitation two weeks ago, but he agreed to the appearance only after doing some soul-searching.

"It took me two days to say yes," he said. "I was not sure, but I looked into the eyes of my band. This is all they've ever wanted. Whatever fear I had, I thought, ‘I cannot not do this because I'm afraid.' I thought about wilting like a daisy ... but I looked at them, and I thought, ‘You don't get a lot of chances in life.' We've been working really hard for three years, and I said, ‘Do you think we're ready?' And they said, ‘We're ready.'"

Costner laughs, adding, "I knew they were lying."

    Kevin & Modern West,
I love the song Superman 14. I didn’t know you had it in ya Kevin. I love all your movies & to think now that I can listen to your music is even better.

My husband of 15 years plays the doghouse bass, & his band is making a CD. They play bluegrass & gospel, a song or two of the Eagles stuff & Diamond Rio (mirror, mirror) just to name a few.

The banjo player has written several songs. He’s an awesome song writer. He wrote a song about his Great, Great, Great Grandpa Joe (Return of the Rebel Soldier) which is one of my favorites among others.

Keep on playing. Love ya’lls music.

Kevin was on our morning radio show not long ago so I got to finally hear him sing for the 1st time- loved it! I will check out his CD for sure. He’s still my fave baseball AND western guy to date. Now I’ll get to add singing to the list.

Dear Kid, I love your new cd, i have had ir for a while, and still i listen to it almost everyday. You are so talented. I missed your tour in Baton Rouge,la. If you ever decied to come through again, i would love to be on that list. I am in my 40’s, and a woman the song you sing
all summer long takes me back to my teenage years. all of your music speeks the things in life that are real and true
life events. I find your music refreashing. I love all types of music. Rap, well the way you do it i love, but that hardcore rap just turns m off. I guess because i find it degrading to women, but thats just me,just being a woman. I want to say, keep on keeping real. love your music. Virginia

Virginia, I think you are mistaken, this is a blog on KEVIN COSTNER, not on “doesn’t belong in country” Kid Rock. I’m sure he has a blog somewhere. I’d like to hear from more KEVIN fans.
