Kevin Costner to Play Nashville Gigs

Posted: November 3rd, 2008 at 4:15 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Kevin CostnerGo because you're curious. Stay because you're impressed. I'm guessing that's how a Swing Vote star like Kevin Costner hopes to attract Nashville country fans to two of his upcoming shows. He and his band Modern West are reportedly scheduled to play a honky-tonk on Lower Broadway this week, but they will definitely headline (yes, headline) a CMA Awards show kick-off show on the Sommet Center Plaza on Nov. 11. Costner does have the gritty vocals to rival a Gary Allan or on a good day, maybe even a Keith Urban. And he has a major label record deal now. But I'm not so convinced he should be performing after the other singers at that show, like Rodney Atkins and Heidi Newfield.

This is off the subject, but I cant hold it in. I just got Brad Paisley’s new cd “Play” in the mail today, and it is absolutely amazing! I strongly urge everyone to go out and buy it tomorrow when it hits the stores. You will not be dissapointed. This is album of the year, end of story.

    Brad Paisley message board anyone?
Kevin is fun. I hope people will realize that and not get on some high horse about the integrity of country music. He says its not even really country. so, no one should.

Costner did a radio interview on our local station the other day- he was great! I love his song, had never heard him sing before. I will buy his CD so I can hear the other cuts. I wish him and his band the best- no matter WHERE they play.

It seems some people can’t get past the idea that Costner’s music is not “Country”. He clearly states on his myspace page that his music is Rock/Roots Music/Americana.

Well, for someone who’s NOT “country,” he sure is making the rounds on COUNTRY radio- ours is Top 40 mainstream & he was chatting up pretty good- never ONCE mentioned categorizing his music as “Rock/Roots/Americana music. Sounds to me like he doesn’t care except getting heard.

That’s good. More power to him. Anyone who can get over on the Pop Music industry and it’s fans is okay by me.

Did Pop music hurt your feelings or something? Did a pop music fan tease you in school? Why do you have so much anger towards pop country and its many many many fans?

Defending him on one post, and the sound of dumping on another- fickle fans. Ah well, I’ll take Kevin on Pop country format. It’s not like I listen to the other.

I don’t support an industry who uses singers and musicians for their benefit, and then discards them like yesterdays newspaper when they are no longer making money for them, no matter how talented they are. I don’t support an industry that has no respect for the legends. Who are still making geat music, but won’t be played because they’re too old or won’t do what someone else tells them to do. I don’t support an industry where greed comes before music. I don’t support an industry who tells an artist how to record, what to record, where to record, and who will be playing on the sessions. I don’t support an industry who crushes young peoples dreams if they are losing money. I don’t support an industry that overproduces and overplays music for profit. I don’t support an industry that has no respect for the history of a genre. Maybe you do, but I don’t. However…I accept it as fact. Bottom line is, I refuse to be a slave to Mainstream Pop Culture. Too much corporate greed for me. I prefer an artist/fan driven industry/genre where the music comes first. Makes sense to me. Now suppose you tell me why you support Mainstream Pop Culture Music. Some redeeming values and qualities perhaps?

I like the artists and their music. Period. If they have to go through the torture of what you say, then I will support them through that too. The artists believe in THEIR music/message, and obviously the fans tell them it touches their lives because of something they may have experienced or helped them through a rough patch. The artists also realize it is the FANS that buy their music, no matter who is putting them through their paces. They still have to be pretty driven to go through all that to succeed. I don’t like EVERY Pop country artist out there, nor every song, but those I do, I listen to, and I buy.

That’s your choice. That’s where we differ. I’ve researched both industries, and their qualities, and have listened to a lot of music of both, and have made my conscience decision.

Just like luvncountry said.. I listen to alot of country that is popular simply because I like the artists and the music they make. You like what you like for your reasons..thats fine…you dont see me on here or anywhere else constantly putting down your music and its fans. You not liking popular music does not make you any better than somebody that does.

If that’s what you prefer, fine. I see you don’t comment on any other music than Pop anyway, so it really doesn’t matter. If a person only listens to one type of music (one type of country in this case), how do they know if they like or dislike anything else. By the way, my response was about the industry not the artists. I listen to all music with an open mind. Always have, always will. I refuse to limit myself. Some people are content with that, I’m not. That’s where we are different

Apparently you think you know more about me than you do. I will listen to anything. I truly have an open mind because I refuse to limit myself to genres period. Individual songs is the way I look at it. If i like a song..i like it. I dont care what it is labeled as. So, the fact is, your mind is no more open than mine.

Your mind is so open…I can feel the breeze from here.

RedMa, shouldn’t that be the other way around? YOU being the one with the “open mind?” I’m surprised you have any grey matter left. Ah well, to each his/her own.

The other way around? Lets see. “Your open is so mind…I can breeze the feel from here”. Hmmm…no. I had it right the first time. I guess in your case, “The old grey matter, ain’t what she used to be”.

Why? Because I don’t agree with you?

  • luvncountry says:

Actually RedMa, I was playing up on the “open mind” comment barb you made on Kevin, but I really wasn’t inferring you have no grey matter. I think you are quite intelligent and diverse. And you’re probably right, this old grey mare ISN’T what she used to be, but I still know what I like in music, and I’m going to leave other people’s preferences to themselves.

That said, I do believe you bring a lot to the table in reference to music, particularly YOUR interest. It would be easier to converse with you however if you weren’t so negative about Pop country when others who are NOT listening to your type do not rank the music or artists. From your prior post, I understand your disdain for the industry, but it seems to me, you have little liking or respect for the artists themselves for the reasons I posted above. I believe ALL artists have something to offer, even though I may not like them personally.

While I appreciate your “genius” can ya just tone it down for those of us who like what WE like and leave you to like who YOU like? It’s called “agreeing to disagree.” It would be like me, or Kevin, or other fans of pop country going to a blog on Americana and talking **** on them for no reason other than to say they are inferior, or the artist sucks, or whatever. It gets really OLD, FAST! Is there ANY one artist in pop country you DO like?
