10 Songs I Wish I'd Written, Too

Posted: October 28th, 2008 at 4:21 pm  |  By: Chris Parton

Blake SheltonThe Nashville Songwriters Association International held their annual awards ceremony on Sunday (Oct. 26) and part of the event was naming the "10 Songs I Wish I'd Written." The honorary winners, voted on by Nashville songwriters, are listed here. They're definitely all songs that I would be proud of writing (and enjoy getting a check from), but this got me thinking that we've all got songs we wish we had written - ones that hit real close to home. In no particular order, here are a few on my list, with the singer who made them famous. "Home" (Blake Shelton), "All I Want" (Darius Rucker), "Last Call" (Lee Ann Womack), "Country Man" (Luke Bryan), "Troubadour" (George Strait), "High Cost of Living" (Jamey Johnson), "She Left Me for Jesus" (Hayes Carll), "The Poor House" (the Boxmasters), "All Summer Long" (Kid Rock) and "I Remember" (Griffin House). What songs do you wish you've written?

OK, if you’re going to talk about “10 Songs I wish I had written”, you can at least actually give credit where credit it due. The songs were not written by George Strait , Lee Ann Womack, nor Kid Rock. That’s a lot of problem in the music business people don’t address the people that deserve some real praise, the ACTUAL writers that have helped sell albums and made some great country stars, STARS. Elvis never wrote a song and most people are not aware of the writers. So here is to the writers that make music great!!

    Holmes, Monty Stacher, Leslie (Troubadour)

    Enderlin,Erin,Mcanally,Shane L ( Last Call)

Marinell, Leroy,Wachtel, Robert, Zevon,, Warren Ritchie, R.J. Shafer and more) (All Summer Long)

I see that you did say the singers. But I would also address the writers NAMES in this piece.

I wish I could’ve been a co-writer on Redneck Woman! Heck, I would’ve loved just being in the room when it was written. Can you imagine the stories they were all telling to come up with those lyrics? It was probably a fun time.

Just top let you know Elvis did write one song, he was the cowriter. Think it was Heartbreak Hotel but not postive but I do KNOW he wrote at least one of his songs.

Like Tim McGraw says a singer would be nothing without the song and the songwriter. He always has given much credit to the songwriter.

Aren’t we lucky though that there is songwriters but also singers that have a way of putting their stamp on a song and their way of interpeting it that makes you FEEL like they wrote it.

The singers that can do that are the ones that stand the test of time and a long career.

“Seven Year Ache.” What interesting lyrics!

As you can tell I am in the Music Business, so this subject is VERY sensitive to me. I just feel guys like Dean Dillon, Robert Earl Keen, R.J. Shafer should get more recognition than they do.

Dean and Robert both are singer/songwriters

I also believe that in most cases, the song make the artist famous.

I agree with you Janet. And yes I stand corrected Elvis was a co-writer along with Axton, Mae; and Durden,Tommy

    Yea ! Tim.

The song “Home” recently recorded by Blake Shelton was not made famous by him
The song is Michael Buble’s who made it famous however Blake does a nice rendition
