Tim McGraw Multi-Tasks on Pitcher's Mound

Posted: October 27th, 2008 at 10:23 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Tim McGrawHe was just supposed to throw out the first ceremonial pitch before Game 3 of the World Series on Saturday night. But while Tim McGraw was out there on that pitcher’s mound, he took some of his late father’s ashes from his pocket and tossed them onto the mound.

He didn’t make a big deal out of it. It doesn’t look like he was surrounded with paparazzi. He just used the moment to honor Tug McGraw the best way he knew how: to take him back to the spot on the field where, just about 28 years ago, he struck out Willie Wilson to capture the Phillies' only World Series Championship. Ya gotta believe Tug would’ve loved that.

That’s really cool. I remember that series in 1980, and how incredible it was and how unlikely a hero Tug was. But then, the unlikely ones make the best heroes!

Thanks for pointing this out here Alison. I wouldn’t have heard about it otherwise.

Not to knit pick, but Tug struck out Willie Wilson at Veterans Stadium. The Phillies now play at Citizens Bank Park. Minor difference, maybe, but just pointing it out.
And I thought the gesture by Tim was so poignant. Somewhere, the Tugger is smiling :)

That was a nice thing he did for his farther. I am sure it helped Tim to be able to let him rest in peace….God Bless Tim.

I think this is a very beautiful way of honoring his Dad’s memory. May Tim find peace in knowing he will one day be with his father again, and I agree that Tug is up there smiling.

That was so nice he did that. They didn’t even know he was going to do it. He thought it may bring the Phillies good luck because he pitched in the world series. It didn’t matter what field. And it sure did bring good luck, even the players said so.
Mickey your such a jerk. You must care to come here & don’t start talking crap.
Your talking about someones ashes. Have a bit of respect.
    GO PHILLIES!

You’re absolutely right, Stephanie. I tried to word it in such a way that Tim was on the same kind of spot where Tug pitched that pitch, without getting into a long-winded explanation of who played what stadiums. But if I misled anyone, I’m sorry!

when i was a kid growing up in philadelphia, i used to pretend i was tug pitching that last pitch in the world series and jumping to the sky. anywhere there is a mound in phila, i’m sure tug pitched there. it’s nice knowing he’s the tenth phillie on the field tonight.

That was a very cool thing to do and something his father would have wanted.

Thanks, Tim. Your father meant the world to us and I think he’s been with the guys in spirit.

What a beautiful blog…. I love Tim McGraw and how he and his daddy (Tugger) became so close before Tugger’s death.

What a beautiful thing to do…. and I can see by the teams playing … and the whole ball communitey… it meant a great deal to so many.

So moving… thank you for sharing. Nova.

Alison, thank you for bringing the information to CMT fans. But, please check your facts. In addition to the stadium error, the reason Tim was out there is incorrect. Legendary Phillies Hall of Fame pitcher Steve Carlton threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Tim McGraw brought the game ball to the mound.

I was at Game 3. Phillies fans didn’t see anything unusual while Tim was on the mound. We adore Tugger; pandemonium would have errupted if we’d known. One group even had a sign asking Tug to send down his support for the game. The Phillies are proud to host some of Tug McGraw’s ashes on the mound at Citizens Bank Park.

I heard you were going to throw out the first pitch. But then I saw Lefty out there and was wondering.. hmm?? Didn’t even see you do that. Slick move! But I thank you for doing so. Being from Philly I really looked up to your dad and what he meant and did for our city. We’re now here waiting… and waiting… aaaaand wait yet one more day ( hey we’ve waited 25 years… 24 hours wont hurt ) to bring this thing back to where your dad left off. He’s looking down and waiting with anticipation just like we are. So GO FIGHTENS! And God Bless The TUGGER!!!!

Tim O’D of the Philly ‘burbs.

And now that they’ve won it all, and I’m only just now learning Tim did this I’m getting a little choked up…….

I can’t help but think Tug would have been so pleased……

That was a moment that will forever be talked about. The fact that no one knew he was doing it. Tim is a part of Philadelphia forever with that jester to us. His dad gave this city so much. We now have Tim to carry on the legacy his father started with our city. Thank you Tim for a moment Philadelphia will never forget!

I remember Tug tapping his hand against his chest like he was going to have a heart attack in ‘80. When Lidge gave up the broken bat single and then the Rays stole second I started tapping my chest saying, “Come on, Tugger!”
Phillies close it out in ‘80 w/ #45
Phillies close it out in ‘08 w/ #54
    Beautiful.
Thanks Tim! Like Tug would say, “Ya Gotta Believe!”

I was standing in front on the tv as I did back in 1980. Back then I was 32 years old with my glove on helping (I thought) Tug strike out Willie Wilson. When it happened, well all you Phillie fans know what I mean. Last night I had know idea of Tim’s gesture for his father. I’m standing there asking Tug to help Lidge strike this guy out…. and when he did, I told Tug, “This one’s for you Tug… this one’s for you! After finding out that Tug’s ashes were out there,…. I could just see him right there with Lidge….getting that last strike…again!! Tim, that was great! I, as well as any Philly fan of that era loved your Dad and still miss him. I saw him in an “old timer’s” game pitch and someone hit a sky high pop over the mound. He waved all others off and made the catch BEHIND THE BACK! What a performer! The best and an icon that I will miss forever. GO PHILLIES! GO TUG! And Mickey, Kiss Off!!

I wonder why Tugs other son the one he raised has nothing to do with this, or his daughter. Tims father didn’t even bother with him until he got older which is great. But, maybe he should have walked on the field with his half brother & half sister. I kinda feel sad for Tugs other children that they get no attention, only Tim. I like Tim, don’t take me wrong. It’s just wrong.
