Adam Hood Hits a Different Groove at Nashville Show
I heard through the grapevine that new artist Adam Hood was a pretty good musician. But when I saw him play for the first time in Nashville earlier this week, I was completely blown away. Hood, from the buzzing metropolis of Opelika, Ala., performed the bluesy country songs off his latest album, Different Groove. He was absolutely amazing. Not only did he have a voice that the Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson would be jealous of, he had an incredible dynamic range on his guitar. Every lick was audibly impressive.
All of Hood’s songs were memorable, but my favorites are “Late Night Diner,” “22 Days Too Long” and “Different Groove.” The first was inspired by a Waffle House waitress who served him a late night meal. The lyrics in the chorus, “It costs a lot to love somebody/I know because I had to pay the price,” were a highlight because they helped paint the picture of how lonely a plate of scattered, smothered, covered hash browns could be without someone special to share it with. I loved “22 Days” because it was an upbeat take on the life of a traveling musician. The groove in the melody reminded me of my favorite Rolling Stones song, “Tumbling Dice.” The title track of Different Groove really set the tone for the whole show. This swinging Southern rock song sounds like it should be the soundtrack that welcomes tourists across the county line into Lee County, Ala., because it exhibited Hood’s Opelika dialect perfectly.

Hey! Another Adam Hood fan. I’ve been a fans since his live album in 2004 “21 to Enter” Pete Anderson is all over his work too. Producing and playing. Adam keeps good company. Great music.
Kim says:
Thanks for the tip! If Redmaz like him that much it must be good! will check him out…

Hi Kim, I think it’s great that you check out music of artists you’ve never heard of. I do it all the time covering many genres. To me it’s shows an open mind, and a passion for music. Music is infinite. I refuse to limit myself. I hope you feel the same.

I love having no classes on Friday, I can blog all day long…
I don’t like limits either. I’ll try almost anything. More often than not i’ll find something i like. The “other members also liked” tab on the download sites are a big problem; I go out there for one song and come off with a hundred. How do you grow if you don’t try people you’ve never heard of? that makes no sense to me. I’m not one of those people who can listen to the same thing over and over without much variation. New can be good, I was taught. I was also taught that not everything is good, and to make my own decisions. Find the people who’s opinion you respect, and use it to help form your’s. but don’t just take everyone and everything on faith. that doesn’t make sense to me.

I like you’re outlook on music. It’s refreshing. I don’t see it often enough.

Have you heard of a guy named Tim Montana? found an article that called his stuff “grunge country.” he preformed on Good Morning America or something. Any thoughts?
Kim says:
the or something part of that statement is more like it; it was Letterman, sorry.
RedMaZ says:
I checked out Tim Montana. Not really what I’m into. Not that he isn’t any good, but I just don’t like that style of music, and it has that overproduced, pieced together sound that I don’t like either. But hey? It didn’t hurt to check him out. That’s the only way a person will know if they like it or not.
RedMaZ says:
So anyway, did you check out the Adam Hood CD? Overall I like it quite a bit. Some of my favorite tracks are “22 days Too Long”, “Different Groove” and “Varnado”.
Kim says:
yup Adam H. is on the player. Liked it so far. Varnado is my favorite so far.
Kim says:
Montana is a liiittle over done yeah, but not bad. If he would go a little more acoustic sounding I think it would be really good. the phrase “grunge country” was intriguing though.
good for you for being an adult in saying you didn’t like it for you. thats refreshing too.

Adam Hood is truely an amazing artist. I have been watching this guy for the last couple of years and his shows continue to blow me away. I am glad he getting a little more recognition.
Kim says:
Nice to know Red and I aren’t alone in the world!
RedMaZ says:
Sometimes it feels like we are though doesn’t it? But that’s okay. So, are you into the Texas Roots/Red Dirt Music scene at all?
Kim says:
big time. I’m in TX, so I get a bunch of stuff first hand. Love the atmosphere. you?
RedMaZ says:
Oh…You’re in Texas! Well no wonder, it all makes sense now! I listen many styles of music (Many), but I make it a point to listen to a lot of Texas/Red Dirt Music. Reckless Kelly, Stoney LaRue, Wade Bowen, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Modern Day Drifters, Jason Boland…Great Music! Beats the heck out that Pop Country stuff.

Adam Hood is really good! And you are absolutely correct about my album, over produced and pieced together. It was my first attempt and some how it grabbed the attention of David Letterman and he had me on the show. I just started my new album so hopefully I can make you into fan’s with this one!
Thanks,
Tim
