Tim McGraw Says Greatest Hits Idea Was Not the Greatest

Posted: October 14th, 2008 at 12:42 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Tim McGrawWe should've known something was up. Why would Tim McGraw release a third greatest hits record when he's in the middle of working on a real album? Now, thanks to a statement from his publicist, it all makes sense. His record label did it, not him. And frankly, he's bummed. "I am saddened and disappointed that my label chose to put out another hits album instead of new music," said Tim McGraw. "I've only had one studio album since my last hits package. It has to be just as confusing to the fans as it is to me." Because of some contractual commitments, Curb Records apparently had the right to do this, even without any involvement from McGraw. "In the spirit of an election year," McGraw said, "I would simply say to my fans, ‘I'm Tim McGraw and I don't approve their message.'" He went on to say that he still loves the songs, but that the whole concept is an embarrassment to him. If he's embarrassed, imagine how the fans feel for paying good money for this album.

    Melanie-

You have no idea what you’re talking about. Have you thought about the fact that his timing is perfect? This would not have gotten any press if he had done it 3 weeks before the release date.

Second, why is Tim a dissapointment? He didn’t have to say anything, ever but he chose to.

I am currently working at a small indie, and while I personally have no authority to make album release decisions at all, I think everybody I work with would find it appalling that labels are still doing this. Tim has had a lot of success with Curb, but I think something like this might lead him to look for a new deal elsewhere. He’s got the clout to survive at a smaller, lesser known label and still make lots of money and lots of fans happy.

    Posted: October 14th, 2008 at 2:46 pm

Which just goes to show the public how little control the artists sometimes have over decisions and releases. Tim should find another label or create his own which will allow him the freedom to do more of what HE likes and wants. There are a number of artists doing that and it seems to work for them. I am NOT disappointed in Tim & am glad he spoke out.

  • Christine says:

    Posted: October 14th, 2008 at 3:13 pm

Countryfan11, Tim has created his own record label but he has to wait until his contract with Curb is up before he can switch labels. I think Curb is just releasing another greatest hits and two of his albums for the price of one and all that stuff, so they can make as much money off of him as possible before he leaves Curb.

  • PEGGY says:

    Posted: October 14th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

So why not just boycott the GH3 Album? Why do Tim fans feel they have to buy it? I don’t get it. Most if not all of Tim fans have all his stuff, don’t waste your money. That simple. I don’t blame Curb for making money off Tim. Tim wanted out and now he is paying dearly.

  • Kim says:

    Posted: October 14th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

I’m with you on that one Peggy. Tim’s paying for that decision. He maybe should have known better than to sign with Curb. I just disagree with his decision to criticize his label like that, because he’s the one who signed with them. even though he’s leaving i think he could have showed a little respect and shut up on this one. let the fans do what they want and let his bosses do what they want, and you keep working on the new stuff. he could have just assured us that the new stuff would be here soon. i don’t think he should imply that the Curb people are inept, because they can’t all be. they just aren’t the label for him.

  • Danielle says:

    Posted: October 14th, 2008 at 5:30 pm

I don’t think he should have said anything, This was very unprofessional of him. Why wait this long to speak out anyways? Because the CD isn’t doing well? It got bad reviews. He had no problem getting attention speaking out now so I am sure he would have gotten it somehow before the CD got released. I totally agree with Kim & Peggy on everything they said. Also, since he did decide to do this, I think it was wrong for him to do this now due to the fact that his wife is on a cover of a magazine & on walmart sounstage today. Couldn’t he let her get the attention for the day.

Getting off Curb Records is like breaking out of a maximum-security prison. They sign unknowns to contracts that keep them bound to the label for the next 20 years or the life of their career. Tim can’t just “sign with another label.”

  • hotelmotel says:

Alison says, “If he’s embarrassed, imagine how fans would feel for paying good money for this album.”

But why should any fan be embarassed to buy this CD if they like the songs on the CD and feel the price is right?

I don’t think Tim’s comments should influence fans decision to buy this, one way or the other.

I dont have a problem with Tim speaking out for whatever reason he is doing it. It is no secret and not a rare occurance for a record label to overly take advantage of artists. So i cant help but lean to Tim’s side on this one.

  • Linda says:

Mike Curb has been a record exec since the 1960s. He was briefly (like one term) Lt. Gov of CA back in the 80s. He’s been in country music a whole lot longer than he was in CA politics. Have you looked at their roster of artists?

  • amyrtis says:

Tim is not the first to have a problem with Curb. Lyle Lovett, Hank Williams Jr. Leanne Rimes.. To name a few. I think Tim was well within his rights to speak out.. I you don’t speak up people can walk all over you. You people speaking out against Tim need to get a clue.

  • KaseyLowell says:

I never feel bad for Tim. It has gotten way too big for his britches. With fame comes lessons and losses. Tim was so into himself that he didn’t see the truck hitting him head on. Leann Rimes also had a problem with Curb tried to get out of her contract and sued Mike Curb. Mike Curb WON!

I’m wih Tim on this one.

This is the 3rd time CRUB has released a GH package rather than new music from Tim. He was ready to release Set This Circus Down when GH1 was released. He was ready to release Let It Go when GH2 was relesed. And now the fans had the pleasure of listening to great new music on tour this summer only to have CURB yet again delay new music for a GH package.

  • kyle says:

    Posted: October 14th, 2008 at 8:55 pm

I’m not saying that Curb didn’t do any wrong or take advantage of Time. But it’s the timing that makes me question his actions. It’s not like he found out on October 7th that he had a Greatest Hits CD coming out. If he really opposed it and wanted to make a statement, why wait till your LOW first week sales come out. It would have been stronger to make his argument before, so when the sales report came back he could tell the execs “told you so.”

I mean if he wanted to truly make a statement and stick up for us fans and his career, he should of told the fans to boycott the CD.

  • Linda says:

    Posted: October 14th, 2008 at 9:27 pm

Maybe the idea of GH packages has passed when most fans have the previous hits anyway and can cherry-pick anything they want off iTunes. Don’t a lot of us have our own hand-picked and burned “Hits” CDs of our favorite artists?

  • Ebony says:

    I love Tim !!

I think label robs the artist, and is consistant with this. Tim wants out and is being relaistic witht he fact that to do this he must kiss Curbs butt. I say play live shos and let them do what they want while lawyers settle this. Live shows is where the money is anyway.

And i know i will see a tim show rather he plays old songs or new songs.

  • Steph says:

Hey, amyrts, if all those other artists were having trouble with Curb, why in the world does anyone sign with them? if anyone needs to get a clue its the people who get offered a deal from Curb. Its bad news. Tim made a decision, and now he should live with it without whining. its not like he’s going broke because of it.

  • Linda says:

    Posted: October 14th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

Tim made his decision in the early 90s, when the landscape was very different. LeAnn was signed by her dad when she was about 12 - way too young to have any input about her own career. I agree new artists should avoid Curb but the veteran artists are pretty much stuck.

  • Kaylee says:

    Posted: October 14th, 2008 at 11:47 pm

IMO Tim never supported the release of this GH package. He didn’t do the rounds of all the talk shows to support it, you couldn’t pre-order it on his website weeks in advance like other CDs. After putting it out, Curb hasn’t suportted it either. No ads every 10 seconds on radio, TV etc. like when other CDs are released. It wasn’t even out with the new CDs when I went to buy it - I had to hunt for it.

I agree with you 100% Shelley. Tim is playing the sympathy card with fans. Most of his songs are written by songwriters and they deserve a huge amount of credit for Tim’s success. I’ll bet Songwriters will be hesitant to deal with him.Start writing Tim because you are walking on thin ice.

Tim did comment and communicate appreciation to those creative people that made contributions to the songs on the Greatest Hits. I appreciate that Tim “FINALLY” did come out and say something. He consistently has been very professional about not bad mouthing his label which I admire him for. He has one more album under contract with Curb and they know it . . . so they are prolonging him leaving, yet consistently do not support his efforts in videos, advertising, radio programming, etc.

Until Tim came out there were blogs all over about how “money hungry” he must be by doing what was done. So no matter what he does he will be criticized for something. So he is setting this one straight. Good luck Tim in getting your last album out so you can move onto your own control. Just keep the music coming to us!

Curb Records should have had never released the greatest hits in the first place. I think it was wrong. They would have made allot of money on Tim’s new material anyways.

And why are people getting mad at Tim for speaking up? I think he had the right too. Curb records should have had waited on Tim to release his new material. It might be more money for Tim but Curbs records just want to make as much money as they can. It’s embarrassing to Tim probably because all of his fans know that he is releasing new music soon, but instead another greatest hits comes out. Which confuses some fans probably.

    just stating my opinion.

    Posted: October 15th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

I see the Tim hater is alive an well, she changes her name daily to criticize Tim. Hey DSL in New Orleans how are you doing.

First CURB has treated many of their artist like crap for years. Just research Merle Haggard’s comments about them, Tim sounds like a saint compared to Merle. Look at the past history with LeAnn Rimes, Lyle Lovett, Jo Dee Messina, how about Clark Family Experience, a amazing group of brothers and Curb held on to their album for 5 years dealying it till they didn’t stand a chance. They have delayed Steve Holy’s album over and over, Bombshell’s album. They delayed Hedi’s album multiple times before it was released. Rodney spoke up in a interview that his new album is done, and Curb is holding back releasing the first single. Hank Williams JR has had problems with them, Wynonna has had problems, and you ought to read what Hank Williams the 3rd says about them.

Tim has held his tongue for many years and let them treat him like dirt. He has been honorable but there comes a times when you have to SPEAK up, many of his fans just didn’t understand why there would be another GH album so soon and especially after only one album of new music.

Also Tim was so proud of his new muisc he did three of the songs on his tour this summer, Tim stated the new single would be at radio in late July. Do you know the song(You Had To Be There) was actually added to mediabase as a add for a new single on July 27th. Many stations had the word and even mention they would play his NEW song from the NEW album on that date. At the LAST minute CURB pulled the song and released Let It Go and hatched this idea of a GH album.

Can you imagine how Tim felt, He takes so much pride in his music, he doesn’t give albums every year of 10 songs with a bunch of filler. He works hard to give his fans albums that are 13-15 songs of quality music that WE feel proud to play and play for years and years. You don’t stay as big as he has for almost 15 years by putting out garbage.

Put yourself in his shoes, music is a passion for him, this is his craft, his work, the money is great but that is not the only reason he does it, ANY TIM FAN knows that just based on the quality of work he has done for years.

  • Janet says:

    Posted: October 15th, 2008 at 6:16 pm

Tim is CURB’s breadwinner and has been for years, he has made them millions and they know it. He has ONE album left on his contract with them, one studio album of all new material left. They know once he turns in that album to be released, he is finished with them and CURB will be left without their cash cow.

CURB has not supported Tim in many ways over the years, do you know the producer of XM once said that if Tim was with any other label he would have multiple Entertainer awards by now instead of just ONE his whole career.

Even with all Tim did in 2006 and 2007 and just so you know Tim was the BEST selling Male Country artist in 2006 and 2007 over ALL country males, Curb did not put out banners and try to promote him for any awards at the CMA’s or ACM’s. That is what labels do they put banners out to the people that vote for their artsit. They did NONE for Tim.

Billboard recently had a article out of the TOP SELLING artists in ALL of music since May 1991 when Soundscan(sales) began and Tim is #7 on that list. Only George Strait and Garth are ahead of Tim is SELLS of albums in country music since May 1991.

Do you know Billboard said Tim is the BESTSELLING artist in ALL of music and that includes Male, Females, Groups in ALL of music who had their first album come out AFTER May 1991.

NO ARTIST that had their FIRST album come out after May 1991 has soldmore than Tim, NONE and that is in ALL music.

Who do you think made a killing off them 40 million in sales, more than Tim, Curb that is who.

  • Janet says:

    Posted: October 15th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

This is on Music Row Magazine’s site today from Tim’s manager Scott Simon.

McGraw manager, Scott Siman explains McGraw’s disappointment from a creative level. “True musical artists put a lot of sweat, time, energy, and ultimately their heart into recording a new record,” says Siman. “It is their passion. They pour countless hours over chords, melodies, and rhythms just to define each song to sonic perfection. Tim McGraw is no different. He makes amazing music, is not afraid to push the envelope, and according to most anyone you talk to on Music Row he has an iconic talent to hear a song and transform it into something not many others can do.”

“The McGraw fan is Tim’s backbone,” Siman told Music Row. “Those who stand by him and look forward to hearing anything he records; those who attend his concerts every year just to catch a glimpse of him singing their favorite songs live. This is why upon Curb’s most recent release of Tim McGraw’s Greatest Hits 3, something needs to be said.”

That says it all and I am so proud of Tim for speaking up this time, Curb has done him wrong many times and myself as a true fan since 1993, am proud of him for speaking up, I was actually upset with him for not speaking up intially. We know and I KNOW how passionate he is about his music and how Tim goes the extra mile to give us quality music that we can play for years, HE doesn’t do the same album over and over with filler songs and I appreciate that as a very passionate fan of country music.

I will always supporty his music and always look forward to buying his music, playing his music and seeing him in concert.

Thank you Tim for the many years of enjoyment you have given me with your music, look forward to many more. Like your one song on Set This Circus Down says, your music has been a FABRIC of the pieces of my life.

  • hotelmotel says:

    Posted: October 15th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

Scott Siman’s remarks are pretty much beside the point. McGraw may be a “true musical artist,” as he claims, but what does that have to do with Curb’s business decision to release a greatest hits CD now and the studio album later.

Simon makes note of the fact that McGraw spends “countless hours” working on his music. Well, the Curb executives may also spend “countless hours” working at their jobs. What does the amount of work one puts into this have to do with the decision.

While Simon seems to make a big deal about McGraw’s passion for music, I doubt that McGraw is upset by this because it somehow offends his creative sensibilities. On what creative grounds is he really upset that Curb is making an anthology of some of his songs? Does he think the anthology somehow misrepresents his “artistic vision?” I highly doubt it.

Rather, this seems like a business decision that may favor Curb’s financial interests over McGraw’s financial interests. I really don’t care about how that sort of financial dispute is resolved. But I do take issue with McGraw’s management pretending that this is about art when it probably isn’t.

At a minimum, if this is about McGraw’s artistic vision, the manager should explain WHY Curb’s decision is such an infringement on this vision instead of speaking in vague generalities.

I hate it when singers like Tim think they are in control when they have signed a legal contract/ He could always break the contract and pay Curb. Stop crying about everything Tim. The actual songwriters need royalties to make a living too. All you do is try to sell their songs with your horrible voice. The sad thing is people are buying it. Tim is the Briney Spears of Country Music.

  • JANET says:

    Posted: October 16th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

This is a statement from Tim’s manager.

“The logic may be that, by releasing the hits album first, Curb indefinitely delays the release of any following album, thereby extending the singer’s contract.

“You don’t want to release records on top of one another,” says Jessie Schmidt, McGraw’s publicist, “so this will basically extend his contract.”

Asked whether it’s possible for the artist to break his contract with Curb, Schmidt said that it is, but it’s highly unlikely that he will.

“Tim has been with Curb since the beginning of his career, since 1993,” Scmidt says, “and to break a contract, it’s just so much more involved, so no, I don’t think he’s looking to do that.”

Normally, when it comes to releasing a record, the studio and the artist negotiate a date. In this case, however, the decision appears to have been unilateral.

“He disagreed, and they did it anyway,” Schmidt says.

So the question remains: Are McGraw’s fans supposed to support him financially by purchasing the hits album? Or should they boycott it and wait for the next one?

“That’s hard to judge,” says Schmidt. “Obviously, his fans might purchase it because they do love him, but he just wanted them to know that he didn’t support this decision.”

He adds that McGraw will not be doing any press or publicity for Greatest Hits 3.

Tim McGraw Says He’s Completed Work on New Album
    October 16, 2008
Tim McGraw has finished work on an album of all-new music, he said Thursday (Oct. 16) in Nashville, but he’s not sure when his record label will release it. On Tuesday (Oct.14), McGraw issued a statement publicly apologizing to fans for last week’s release of his Greatest Hits 3 by Curb Records. McGraw said he was not involved in discussions about the release of the greatest hits collection and was preparing his new album for release this fall. Curb Records executive vice president and general manager Dennis Hannon issued a statement claiming he had “numerous conversations with McGraw’s representatives with respect to all aspects of the Greatest Hits 3 album.” During Thursday’s interview with syndicated radio producers to promote his new children’s book, My Little Girl, McGraw noted, “I’ve already said, really, what I needed to say about it. I think as an artist, I just wanted my fans to know that I wasn’t trying to screw them — period. They’ve all got that music. I’ve only had one album out since the last one [greatest hits album]. It’s time for new music.”

    Article from Tim

    McGRAW MET THE PRESS YESTERDAY
    Friday, October 17, 2008
Tim McGraw met with the country music press yesterday in Nashville where he talked about current music and the delayed release of his newly completed studio album.
Regarding his hit single, title song from his current studio album, “Let It Go”, Tim said, “I think, dramatically the song, what it said, what it talked about…a sort of redemption and just hitting a place in your life. I guess I was turning 40, I’m 41 not,…that time of your life when you think that way and you start having more thoughts along that road… and there were several along the road on the album that had that kind of feel, so I thought that that song had the feel and the theme for that album.”

McGraw also spoke briefly about his press release this week apologizing to his fans for Curb Records releasing a hits package instead of his new album studio album.

“I think, as an artist I just wanted my fans to know I wasn’t trying to cheat them and trying to screw ‘em, period,” Tim explained. Adding, “It’s time for new music.”

A great part of McGraw’s frustration is his belief that it’s another great bunch of songs from him and his road band. “It’s just a great collection of music and it’s got some great themes and great lessons and we played three of these songs on the road this year and everybody seemed to like them, and we loved playing them, too.”

We love you Tim and can’t wait for the album. You restored my faith in you by speaking up, thanks.

His label has now hit back at him. Maybe all his comments and all the controversy are calculated by both sides to sell the album. go to country standard time dot com and read what his label has said.

Both sides in this dispute are speaking in exremely vague statements which leads me to believe there is more to this than either side will let on.

I suspect both Curb and McGraw have their own selfish motives in this fight.

I really think something is fishy about Tim’s statement. I don’t think Tim is being truthful and he will eventually be found out. If this is the case, I will no longer buy any of his material again, new label or not. What he has done is caused a whole lot of fighting among us all.

I repost from the other blog on the same subject….(I dont know the man personally..but I dont see him as a blatant liar either)

Lets face the reality of the buisness, shall we? When your a struggling artist just trying to pay the bills, it doesnt matter who gave who the demo. The contract (paycheck) is what you pray for. After years of hard work and vested time, energy and emotion, you have your dream laying infront of you in black and white. You skim, you sign. Time and experience build wisdom. No doubt Tim is a wiser man than he was 15 years ago. He is the big bread winner for curb, thats a given! And with the economy sliding downward the way it has been, curb saw an oppurtunity to hang on to their investment a little longer and took it. I feel for Tim that he did not get to see his dream of a new album come to fruition, and its a punch in the chest to fans who were holding there preverbial breath awaiting its arrival. Like waiting for the phone to ring when your sisters about to give birth to her first child. But, when she walks in the door with her belly as big as when she left, you feel the pang of dissapointment, yet you know it is an inevitable event, so you wait. So, as fans, we feel the pang of disappointment,(no doubt Tim feels it more like a knife in the back), and yet, we know it is an inevitable event, so we wait. Just imagine, though, what it will be like when it does arrive!!!WHOO HOO!!!

the basher is here again, and I cannot beleive how dumb some people are.CURB DID NOT MAKE TIM A STAR, he is the one that did it all on his own,People love him and his songs and they are the ones that buy his albums and love them so much that he has sold for

I can’t agree with Molly6 that “CURB DID NOT MAKE TIM A STAR, he is the one that did it all on his own.”

Tim might well have become a star if he signed to another label. Or maybe not. But its beyond absurd to think Tim became a star without help from a Curb.

Perhaps Tim would have done even better had he been on another label. Perhaps he would have done worse. We really don’t know.

Has Tim “MADE THEM MILLIONS,” yes he has. But then again Curb has made Tim millions too.

Its not one or the other. Its both. Tim needs a label, and whatever else may be said about Curb, they didn’t screw up so badly as to prevent him from becoming a superstar. And labels need singers like Tim, and whatever bad things may be said about Tim, again, he has been a boon to Curb.

Tim would have never been a star without the help of a Great Businessman. Tim’s voice is less than stellar. It takes a lot of studio equipment for his voice to at least sound a little better.

It’s EXTREMELY reprehensible for Curb to be treating a format megastar such as Tim like this, considering the MILLIONS of dollars he’s put into their pockets as the format’s #1 chart hog of the past 15 years.

I’m really looking forward to the day Tim leaves Curb Records, which will unquestionably blow a MAJOR hole in Curb’s finances.

He’s been at war with them for several years, going back to the release of his FIRST greatest hits CD, and the atrocious decisions of his label in choosing most of the singles from his fine ‘Let It Go’ CD makes this unquestionably the worst handling of any CD by a format superstar in the past FIFTEEN years, and probably ever.

This newest GH CD is too insulting to believe.

Having just heard his hysterical new single world-premiered on KKGO/Los Angeles (’It’s A Business Doing Pleasure With You’, whose co-writers include Chad Kroeger of Nickelback), I’m REALLY looking forward to his new CD this fall, tentatively entitled ‘Southern Voice’.
