Alan Jackson, Dave Berg, “Good Directions” Top ASCAP Country Awards

Alan Jackson and Dave Berg were the top songwriters Monday night (Oct. 13) at the 46th annual ASCAP Country Awards at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. Presented by the performing rights organization, the event honors the most-performed country songs of the past year. Jackson was named songwriter-artist of the year for "A Woman's Love" and "Small Town Southern Man." Berg received the coveted songwriter of the year prize for writing "Don't Make Me" (recorded by Blake Shelton), "It's Good to Be Us" (Bucky Covington), "Moments" (Emerson Drive), "These Are My People" (Rodney Atkins) and "What Kinda Gone" (Chris Cagle). Song of the year honors went to "Good Directions," the Billy Currington hit written by Rachel Thibodeau. EMI Music Publishing was named ASCAP's publisher of the year. Brooks & Dunn, LeAnn Rimes and Kelly Clarkson performed during a tribute to Reba McEntire, recipient of this year's ASCAP Golden Note Award for her outstanding career achievements. Other artists performing during the evening included Dierks Bentley, the Grascals, Luke Bryan and the SteelDrivers.

Almeadia - Luke and Rachel co-wrote the song.

The thing that gripes me about the PRO’s (all three of them) is that at their awards shows they only list THEIR writers on the song. I realize that each PRO has their own awards shows to honor their writers, but it really wouldnt kill them to at least list/mention the co-writers from the other PRO’s. It just seems like a big ol’ slap in the face to the co-writers to me.

Luke Bryan and Rachel Thibodeau did indeed co-write “Good Directions,” and the two of them performed the song together at Monday night’s ASCAP Awards. (And did a great job, too, I should add.) Bryan was acknowledged as the co-writer at the awards ceremony, but Southtowngirl is correct that ASCAP, BMI and SESAC present the awards only to their respective writers. Bryan will receive his plaque when BMI hosts its annual country awards in November. (BTW, CMT.com will have a more extensive story and photos from the ASCAP event later today.)

Oh, boo. Luke Bryan gets my kudos. He sings it just as well or better than Billy Currington, too.

    Hello Mr Gilbert,
I would like to know where I can address my comment to the writer of the main news article regarding the American Music Awards. I’m totally offended that the writer made no mention that Reba McEntire was also up for the favorite country female award! And yet mentions Garth Brooks who is not even activly touring. This one sidednes with Carrie and Taylor has gone on long enough. I’m glad there’s Reba fan sites out there that publish the honest information so we can vote!

I wish they would release Reba and LeAnn’s duet. I love the song.
