Sunday With Dierks Bentley and Tim McGraw
It all started with a $500 Honda motorcycle. But then came Dierks Bentley's publishing deal, and that bike quickly gave way to a 2003 Softail Harley-Davidson. One with higher handlebars and silver-braid cable. That's the one Bentley will be riding around Nashville on Sunday (Oct. 5) for his charity motorcycle ride. And The Tennessean reports that the downtown concert after the ride will feature Bentley plus Tim McGraw, John Rich and others. But don't expect a staged event with a predetermined set list. "I want the vibe to be laidback and loose and fun. The way most concert tours are done now, a guest can't get up and do a song or two on the fly without an act of Congress," Bentley said.

A guest can’t get up and do a song or two on the fly? Really? Is he saying he has no control over his concerts?
TxAgg says:
Dierks perched on a cool Harley. Doesn’t get much better than that!
Ann says:
Great article and a very worthy charity. See you Sunday Dierks.
Marianne says:
I think he is refering to the way warm up bands cant do stuff unless it’s in the contract.
RedMaZ says:
That’s not what he’s saying. He’s basically saying he has to do what he’s told. It says nothing about the warm up bands.
Kevin says:
It also doesnt say that he has to do what he’s told. I think he probably means that after you have a certain setup for a show its hard to change at the last minute or with not much notice. There are alot more people working on a tour than just the headlining artist and those people have to work on a very tight schedule in order to keep the show moving from town to town and keep it on time. So changing the show around even a little bit could sometimes cause problems for alot of people who already have a tough job. Thats my opinion and until dierks is directly quoted as saying something, why dont you stop telling people they are wrong and stop trying to put words in Dierks’ mouth.
Renee says:
I agree & think what he was trying to get at is being out on tour you have to stick to the schedule & he doesn’t have the opportunity to just jam out with the band and sing some new stuff. Dierks has so much control over his concerts, if you’ve ever been to one recently you’d know. He puts on an amazing amazing show with so much energy and talent!!
What I think Dierks is saying is he likes the idea of this charity event to be spontaneous & laid back….ride on a bike, sing some country music with his country friends& have a great time for an even greater cause.
This is going to be an eventful day for such a wonderful cause. All of the entertainers are giving of their time and themselves to raise money for the children of Vanderbilt & should be PRAISED for doing so!
God bless these artists for caring so much & giving back to the community!!!
Kevin says:
Thank you Renee… you are exactly right!
Janet says:
I think with what he means is big concert tours now are all so staged with videos and special effects that its hard to be off the cuff. You have all them backstage people making sure the lights are just so right and the videos are planned for a certain song. Much of that is done with computers and such you just can’t go off on another path.

I agree with Kevin and Renee - Every tour is very well orchestrated. It has to be. Not every artist has the same road band - at least not ALL the same people every time - and they have to know the music to play it. That doesn’t mean that the artist doesn’t have a say in things, just that everything must operate a certain way to run smoothly. Lighting, sound, all that stuff has to be in a relatively similar order - everyone knows what they need to do at differenct times, songs, etc. All I can say is I sure wish I was in Nashville this weekend enjoying any spontaneity that might be going on!! I was lucky enough to see Dierks in Greenville at Chiefs in May this year on his “bus tour” and it was all spontaneous - no set list, etc., “What do ya’ll wanna hear?”, just him and Rod playing and I must say it was AWESOME!! Dierks is an artist that looks after his fans and gives 100% every time. Peace, Love & Hugs! :-)
RedMaZ says:
Almost every artists I listen to and go see in concert comes on stage and says “What do ya’ll wanna hear”, and more times than not, if there’s a musician buddy of theirs or a music legend in the audience, they’re more than welcome to get up on stage and jam. You make it sound like these are some rare and special occassions when this happens.
Kevin says:
good for you
RedMaZ says:
I know good for me. Not good for you.
Kevin says:
na… im doing just fine.
RedMaZ says:
Thank you for the reply. Fisrt of all, where in this blog did I bash anyone? I didn’t. A charity motorcycle is fine, but I was commenting on his qoute about playing music. If you get a chance read the last sentence of the paragraph. That’s what I was replying to.
Renee says:
Oh you are welcome I was just really surprised that any event so positive could bring up a negative response in your first reply. Implying or suggesting that Dierks doesn’t have any control over his concerts, well, I considered that as a direct bash to him as an artist. Whatever he did mean when he said a “guest can’t get up and perform a song or two on the fly without an act of congress” I am sure only comes from personal experience & a desire to be a little more down to earth during this Charity event with performing music. I DO think everyone involved and donating their time should be commended & able to just jam out and have a great time. Sorry but the way I read it you were being a bit harsh.
RedMaZ says:
Like I said I wasn’t commenting on the benefit. I just can’t imagine if Cody, Stoney, Wade, or Randy were at his show, he wouldn’t want them to get up on stage for a song or two. Those guys invite him up whenever possible. I know they’re friends, so it’s not Bentley saying no.
Kevin says:
If it fit into the schedule then im sure he would like to have friends come up and play a little, but alot of times it might not be possible. Its not that he cant make it happen if he wanted to…he just knows that for everything to run on schedule like its planned then he has to stick to the game plan most of the time. Im sure he isnt FORCED to to that. He chooses to do that
Just Me says:
CONGRATULATIONS to Dierks!!! He and his wife Cassidy welcomed baby Evalyn Day Bentley into the world just before midnight last night. She weighed in at 7lbs 10oz.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
MiaT says:
Yup…..Just another reason while I am moving to the great state of Tenn. LOL
TJ says:
I think Dierks just wanted a jam session. Every artist comes to the stage with a set list no matter what the venue, but it some atmosphere’s like Dierk’s Ride Show he, McGraw and Rich could be spontaneous maybe do a reprise or add some things at the last minute that you can’t do at an arena show.
I saw the vid of McGraw doing his new song “You Had to Be There,” just him and two guitars. It was simple and cool and you could really hear the vocal and the lyric which also can get lost in arena show!
