Crystal Shawanda Finds Common Ground With Loretta Lynn
Something that always interests me is when an artist shares a personal story, sometimes about where they draw their inspiration or motivation. It may come from very personal experiences or from heroes at a distance — and many times, both. “Loretta Lynn for me was who I grew up watching my mom sing along with, like somebody finally understood her. But even as a kid, I could see that she found a comfort and even almost a friendship in her music,” says Crystal Shawanda, the new artist who sings, “You Can Let Go Now.”
Crystal went on to explain that her mother used to gather her family around the radio by the wood stove, holding blankets and singing along to the Grand Ole Opry. She added that Loretta Lynn grew up in a similar manner, as both women overcame hardships in life and found solace in country music.
“And I guess for me, I felt like if this little Indian girl on this reservation and this little girl in this coal mining Kentucky town — if they both grew up the same way, and all this common ground and they both were relating to this beacon of hope — that’s what country music was for them. It made me realize how small the world really was and how we’re all more the same than we are different.”
