Jack Ingram's New Music Will Have "More Guts"

Jack IngramThe word from Jack Ingram's label is that his new music will have "more guts." That comes from Scott Borchetta, the head of Big Machine Records, which finally brought Jack to a national audience after years and years of being a fixture on the Texas music scene. The new single, "That's a Man," is at radio stations, with an official add date in mid-October. It's like a punched-up folk song about young men who toughen up under challenging circumstances. (The album is scheduled to follow early next year.)

Now that Jack has played for 1.7 million people in the last three years (opening for Brad Paisley, Martina McBride, Sheryl Crow and many more), the label is hoping to take him to ... you guessed it ... THE NEXT LEVEL. We hear it all the time in Nashville, but if any song is going to do it, I'd pick "The World Ain't Slowin' Down," which will be on the new album, too. A label rep played it for some of us at CMT, and while I'm very happy that Jack broke through to the big time, this tune would sound so cool in a club, with all the folks merrily singing along. It sort of reminds me of Tracy Lawrence's "Time Marches On," in that life carries on, and you better darn well have a sense of humor about it.

So for those longtime fans (and I'm one, too) who have been following his career way before "Wherever You Are," but didn't really care for the newer mainstream stuff, hang in there for six more months. You might just get what you've been waiting for.

I certainly hope Ingram has gotten that Pop Music out of his system, and gets back to his Roots Music that made me a fan of his over 10 years ago. I felt he was well on his way to be in the same league as VanZandt, Earle, and Shaver, then all of a sudden he turned into Chesney and Urban! Stick with what you do best Jack, Americana/Roots music. Being a fan of yours for so long I’m willing to forgive your (hopefully temporary) misguided direction.

Jacks music has always had “guts”. Listen to his older stuff. I like the new stuff too. Remember that Jack’s dream is his dream. If you like it fine if not fine, but Jack’s gonna do what he wants to do — he always has and he always will. But his vision for his music be it Earle or Urban will be his. Hope you come along for the ride!

Well said Zena. I have followed Jack for years and love all his music, it all speaks to me in different ways. I can’t wait to see what Jack has in store for us next!

Great article on Jack Ingram’s forthcoming release and I’m especially anxious to hear “The World Ain’t Slowin Down” as it’s a song by another favorite of mine, one Ellis Paul from the Boston Music scene. A great song, indeed.

Looking forward to Jack’s new CD and hoping it makes a big splash. Devotees of Ellis Paul - the songwriter who wrote “The World Ain’t Slowing Down” have been merrily singing along for quite a while…..and welcome many other voices joining in! :-)

i’ve been with ingram through all of this, and his private answer to the first comment would be, “I starved to death trying to protect the roots and the cause” After he had his children, and been hacking at it for over a decade, he decided to make some radio hits. I yelled at him, got into an argument about that hinder cover. Looking back, lips is what did it for him. Lips won over all the chicks, wherever you are went #1, but lips is what made him a household name. Anyway, it is his dream, it is his life, and the good news is…let him make some money over the next ten years, he can always come back to his roots after he has created his star. He told me today he sings all my exes live in texas on a george straight tribute show on cbs late may. Huge gig, as he said, I was by far the weakest name on this roster, but damnit I was on the roster. I ‘m very proud of him. Now Darius Rutger ‘hootie’ does country is a diff story
