Levon Helm Helps Create "Nashville Moment" at Americana Conference
When Levon Helm's friends showed up Wednesday night (Sept. 17) in downtown Nashville for his concert at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, his admirers onstage included Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, John Hiatt, Sheryl Crow, Delbert McClinton, Billy Bob Thornton, Buddy Miller and Sam Bush. Oh, and two people from the audience -- Steve Earle and Allison Moorer -- also climbed onstage to help close the show. It was the kickoff for the Americana Music Festival and Conference that's taking place here this week.
Just yesterday, Craig Shelburne wrote about having had one of those "Nashville moments" this week when Alison Krauss, Earl Scruggs, Tony Rice and several others showed up for Jerry Douglas' performance at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. People who live in Nashville -- or visit here often -- come to expect those moments while somehow never taking them for granted. The only way I can describe those times is to say that you feel extremely honored just to be in the same room while the music is being played.
I'll be heading back to the Ryman tonight for the Americana Honors and Awards show, one of the highlights of music conference. Jim Lauderdale is hosting the awards show, and Buddy Miller is serving as the bandleader. The evening is scheduled to feature John Hiatt, Joan Baez, Jason & the Scorchers, James McMurtry, Chris Thile with Edgar Meyer, Tift Merritt, Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Billy Bob Thornton & the Boxmasters, just to name a few. Needless to say, it's an impressive lineup. And while I'm not necessarily expecting another Nashville moment to take place, I certainly won't be surprised if it does.
