Reba McEntire Earns ASCAP’s Golden Note Award

Reba McEntireCongratulations to Reba McEntire, who will be honored next month with ASCAP’s Golden Note Award. The performing rights organization presents the distinction to those artists who have achieved overwhelming success - and that certainly means Reba, no question. It’s amazing to me how many friends I’ve made over the years because of her music. When I enrolled at Belmont University in Nashville, I encountered people who knew every song, every video and every hairstyle. At that time, I think the only Reba album I had was For My Broken Heart. And still, even as a teenager without all those life experiences, I was totally wrapped up in those emotions. I knew that when I had my own broken heart, it would be devastating, but life would go on. And it did.

Since then, I’ve gone back and learned all those ’80s classics. (My favorite is “The Last One to Know” - or maybe “Somebody Should Leave.”) Since I’ve been in the business, I’ve had countless conversations with colleagues about her lyrics, her phrasing and her videos. I took a few English classes at Belmont, and I think the same principle applies to songs and short stories alike - you need to have conflict to make the narrative interesting. She’s incredibly savvy about choosing characters that are in a tough spot, from “Whoever’s in New England” all the way up to “Every Other Weekend,” her current hit with Kenny Chesney. Despite all of her fame and Hollywood accomplishments, she’s still one of the finest country singers we have, and I know she’s not done yet.

I was never a big fan of Reba the singer but I became a huge fan of her in Reba the sitcom. I thought it was so funny. My kids love it too. We always make it a point to watch the reruns together. I also find it amazing when my kids recognize her music on the radio. They love Reba and so does their mom!

“For My Broken Heart” was the first album I learned every word to. I was five.

And I too have gone back looking for more– rather than just buying the compilations, I’ve acquired most of her back-catalog, and while it’s true that not every single song is a gem, especially on the older records, she definitely always found one or two that were absolutely timeless and sang them as such.
