Peace, Joy and Faith Hill

Posted: September 11th, 2008 at 9:33 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Faith HillThis is all Faith Hill's fault. It is only September, and already I want to go sledding and drink hot cocoa and wrap gifts and dress my kids up in red tartan plaid and go to midnight mass. That's how moving her Christmas music is. Wednesday night (Sept. 10), I watched her tape a special Christmas episode of WTTW's Soundstage, and today I feel all Norman Rockwelly inside.

From the minute she belted out the first note of "Joy to the World," it was impossible not to get swept up in her gorgeous take on all the holiday classics. And the enormous band, orchestra and choir (I think I counted 30 people on stage) backing her made every song feel so magnificent. Hill gave conductor David Campbell credit for the flawless arrangements, although it was her powerful vocals that filled the arena with awe. She covered the cheery ones, like "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and "Holly Jolly Christmas," but she spent most of the show on the heavenly ones: "Silent Night," "What Child Is This," "Away in a Manger" and one new one, "A Baby Changes Everything."

Hill encouraged the audience of about 2,000 to sing along, saying, "We could just pretend we're Christmas caroling door-to-door, only on television." Remarks like that throughout the three-hour show showed the side of Hill concertgoers rarely get to see -- the not-perfectly-perfect girl who goofs around, needs makeup touch-ups and has to redo songs once in a while. She's just like us, only with a really great voice.

I'm not usually a huge fan of Christmas albums from country artists because they never sound country enough. But Hill's new one, which you can preorder on her Web site, is already on my must-have list. Her distinctive voice and the full orchestra somehow overcome the lack of banjo.

I have more respect for A Non Talented Taylor Swift than I do Faith Hill. While Taylor cannot sing, she can write. Faith has a hidden demon she has kept inside for awhile and now her true colors have been coming out full force. She is a has been.

just because a singer writes a few teenage songs does not make an artist. why does a artist have to be a songwriter also? many singers in the past have not written their own songs, they relied on their singing ability.

I was very lucky to be able to attend the taping last night. I’ve seen her a few times before, but this really drove home that she is truly down to earth and WOW can she SING!! She could not have been friendlier and more welcoming to her audience.

    Thanks for having us, Faith.

If it weren’t for people like Faith Hill, some of the greatest songs in history would have never been heard. For instance, Lori McKenna is not the best vocalist, but she’s an amazing song writer. If it weren’t for Faith, she would still be nothing more than a mother of 5 children and a wife.

The show last night was AMAZING !!! I can’t wait to buy the cd. Her voice range is truly something to hear. She can sing like a quiet angel then from nowhere comes this powerful voice. “O Holy Night” just blew the lid off the crowd. Her age & timeless beauty have nothing to do with her talent. The older she gets the better she gets. You go girl Faith…and I will follow. Thanks Faith for a great show!

I totally have to agree with this review. Faith totally blew the roof off the place last night. This was the second time I have had a chance to hear her new Christmas album and I have to say, she didn’t disappoint either time. She sang three of my favorite Christmas songs (Where Are You Christmas, A Baby Changes Everything, and Little Drummer Boy). I can not wait for A Baby Changes Everything to come out as a single. Thanks again Faith for the terrific show and letting me share in your first ever Christmas special. You totally rocked and can’t wait to get the new album in the mail.

I have seen Faith before but it’s been so long so shame on me. Faith you truly have a talent, you are blessed with an amazing voice, looks, personality, family, everything. Probably make some of us jealous yet so inspiring too. Faith really connected with us the fans too and took time with us, very supportive of our troops, and gave us one heck of a performance. Faith just seems so genuine, true and real. May GOD bless you and your entire family. Be proud. I can’t wait for the xmas albumn too. We thank you for letting us be a part of this. This is something I will always remember. Your fans from CHICAGO Alisha and Tim.

Coming from someone who doesn’t know much about todays Counry Music scene, how can you tell if it doesn’t sound “country enough”?

  • 1FaithfulFan says:

    Posted: September 11th, 2008 at 9:56 pm

Why does it always have to be a “Country Issue”, A “Rock Issue”, a “Pop Issue” etc. Why can’t people just accept the
value of an artist talent and enjoy the music they create and bring to life no matter what style they choose? Music
is universal in my personal opinion. So Why not enjoy for as long as the artists are willing to share it with us?

The days of “country is country” or “rock is rock” are over. There are different genres of Country and Rock with defining characteristics. Anyone who thinks Pop Rock and Roots Rocks. or Pop Country and Roots Country are the same are fools, and very limited in their musical knowledge.

RedmaZ: Why do you always comment on the genre of music? You rarely ever say anything about the vocals of an artist……or who they are as a performer………why must the artists be labeled into a “type” of music? Your comment above has absolutely nothing to do with Faiths Christmas album or anything to do with the subject of this blog…..although, I will say that some of your points do make sense….just in this case, not sure why you went in the direction you did :)

  • RedMaZ says:

    Posted: September 12th, 2008 at 6:26 am

I didn’t bring up the genre of music. If you read the original blog by Alison Bonaquro she stated “I’m not usually a huge fan of Christmas albums from country artists because they never sound country enough” I replied to that quote.

To answer your question about why must the artist be labeled into a type of music? That’s why there are genres. It makes it clear for what you are about to hear.

I have been a fan of Faith Hill’s from her very first song. I was a teenager at the time, living in a house where 7 kids grew up, not one of them a country fan. Now, my sisters and I fly to NY and my family from NY flies down to FL to see Faith & Tim in concert! I would like to make one suggestion: I really, really think that Faith Hill and Taylor Swift should team up and tour together. Taylor Swift is hitting her stride and I think the two of them would be magic! Just a thought… a thought that would draw a ton of fans and make each of then a TON of money! Think it over……..

Well I thought I had something original to say until I saw that there are several entries that say exactly what I thought. My goodness what a show. The most powerful performance I have ever seen. Over three hours of soul stirring vocals. She looked angelic and stunning along with being so totally real.
My wife and I will never forget the experience and I can’t imagine another performer who could connect like that to their audience.
Faith you are a woman among girls in the business.
God Bless you and all your fans.

My husband, me and our daughter Faith (7), attended the taping on Wednesday evening at Sears Centre. Not to our surprise, Faith was COMPLETELY AWESOME — as usual! The Christmas music was angelic, soulful and moving. Then the second set rocked the house.

Faith Hill has the cleanest, most naturally beautiful voice and sense of soul like no other performer. Faith’s music is truly inspirational and moving.

CONGRATULATIONS, Faith, on what is sure to be another hit CD!

Thank you all positive people posting about her performance last night. I was waiting for you to write in. She must of sounded soooo good. There is nothing that she can’t sing, I love all of her songs. I love Faith Hill, since the day she has singing, she has been excellent. She has worked so hard for everything she has and that makes her a better person. I would love for another album of hers to come out, but her family is so important to her,she doesn’t have much time, it will probably be awhile to come out with another one. But thats ok to me, I appreciate her as being a great mother & a wife. No offense toward Tim (I like him), but if he would take a break, like she has, she would be able to get a album out faster than she has in the past. But she allows him to come first. He has toured enough, I think it is her(alone) time to tour. That just goes to show us how much love she has for him. Anyways, I can’t wait to buy her CD.

RedMa, I lost what thread I last wrote you, but I commented that MOST fans on these blogs/threads DON’T CARE about the differentiation of genre specifics; Pop, Country Pop, Roots, etc. The focus is more on the ARTIST and the topic. You’re beating a dead horse. That is not to say your observations aren’t relevant, just obviously ignored for the most part.

I was so fortunate to attend the taping of Faith’s concert last night. Faith was AWESOME! Her magnificent voice, interaction with the audience, and her general sweetness, is purely Faith.

I especially loved her song from the Christmas CD titled, “A Baby Changes Everything”. The songs lyrics are beautiful and so true.

I was blessed to bring my 77 yr. old Mom to the show, and this was her first concert in her life. She has severe rheumatoid arthritis, degeneration of the bones, & scoliosis, so this was an absolute treat for her to “get out” for the evening. She was tired after 3 hrs. but said it was worth it!

Thank you Faith for brightening my Mom’s world!

My sister and I attended the concert in Chicago on Wednesday night. Flew in from New Mexico. I thought it was a wonderful and unique concert. It was unique in that Faith Hill was very engaged with the audience. Because she had to sing a couple of songs over again and stop for makeup and hair — we got to see a “non-performing” side to her. Her voice was just lovely and attending the Christmas concert made it all more special. I can’t make comments about what I think of her personally - (she seems like a very nice person) but her voice and concert was just extraordinary. I’ve always like her voice and was suprised (and pleased) that she sang “Paris” because it’s not one of her top billboard songs. It’s actually one of my favorites. It will be fun to see the PBS broadcast in December.

I too attended the concert in Chicago with my husband and it was truly AMAZING!! We came from Binghamton, New York and would not missed it for the world. Faith is my favorite singer and she is just getting better and better with every year that she performs! It was a night to remember for my husband and I and we would like to thank Faith and the fan club for the tickets. I can’t wait to see the christmas show on tv, I totally agreed with Faith when she said during the show “that if she signs one thing for one person, than she would feel bad because everyone didn’t get a autograph” so I think that was fair to everyone. Faith and Tim are wonderful, caring people and we love them! Thanks again for a night we will never forget.

I also was at the taping last week and one of the things that hasn’t been commented on was Faith talking about her faith. When she sang “A Baby Changes Everything” she talked about how she didn’t want to have any original on her Christmas CDs but that when she heard this song, it absolutely had to be on her album. When a member of the audience shouted out asking Faith to record a gospel album. Faith responded along the lines of “You all need to know that to me, this Christmas album is a Gospel album.” She then paused for a moment before belting out a hymn a capella. It probably won’t make the video and anyone can say what they want about the rest of the fantastic performance, but THAT was a highlight for ME. The only thing missing during the break was a good glass of egg nog.

OMG! Faith looks horrible in this picture. Is that really Tammy Wynette? Faith is going backwards in time instead of forward. Where is Faith’s dunce cap?

Hey, KellieMartin…didn’t your mama ever teach to manners?? Ever heard of “if you cannot say anything nice, don’t say anything??” Or better yet, why don’t you post a picture of you somewhere so we can all comment on it???

I SO WISHED I WAS ABLE TO BE AT THE TAPING. FAITH WILL
NEVER BE A HAS BEEN. SHE IS ONE OF THE FEW ARTIST THAT IS REAL. I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF SEEING HER SEVERAL TIMES, SHE IS ALWAYS OUTDOING HERSELF. SHE IS SUCH A NATURAL.
SHE IS ONE OF THE MOST STUNNING LADIES I HAVE EVER SEEN.
SO WHOEVER DOESN’T THINK SHE IS PRETTY, WELL THAT IS YOUR OPINION, BUT I FIGURE IT IS JUST JEALOUSY. AND IF YOU DON’T LIKE ANYTHING ABOUT FAITH WHY DO YOU EVEN POST ON HERE.

When will this concert be aired? I see Faith Hill every time she comes to Los Angeles and the Chicago concert was one of the best ones I have been to yet. She is an amazing singer and far beats everyone out there.
