What Do You Think of Jessica Simpson's Country Album?

Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 2:21 pm  |  By: Calvin Gilbert

Jessica SimpsonAfter months of advance publicity, Jessica Simpson's first country album, Do You Know, was finally released Tuesday (Sept. 9), and you can preview the entire album -- for free -- at CMT.com. It was produced by two pros -- John Shanks and Brett James -- and the songs were composed by some of Nashville's finest songwriters, including Hillary Lindsey, Aimee Mayo, Chris Lindsey, Troy Verges, Shanks and James, among others. Simpson co-wrote some of the songs, too. And the title track is a duet with Dolly Parton, who wrote the song.

Now that you can hear the album, I'll be curious to find out what you think about the music. You're on the honor system here, of course, but please listen to the entire album and consider it objectively before offering your comments. Set aside any preconceived notions you have about Simpson and any personal opinions you might have about her desire to pursue a career in country music. Think of her as just another new artist whose music deserves to be judged by open-minded country fans. I'll be checking back from time to time to gauge your reaction.

If this is the best that “Nashville’s finest songwriters” have then Nashville needs to find some new songwriters.

I love her new album. I think the she and the writers did a great job. I downloaded it first thing this morning on Itunes. Walked through the office and saw at least one other person who had bought it at lunch and had the cute poster they came with the CD out - so the word is getting out and her country music is being purchased. I think that says something positive about the album. My favorite song is “You’re My Sunday”

The album is great…fantastic music that shows just how much help can be added in the studio. Jessica’s real “talent” is being shown when she’s performing live…it’s awful.

I listened to it online - curiosity got the better of me. What an awful performance. There may be a song or two that might have worked with a different singer, but Simpson’s caterwauling is just plain hard on the ears. My local paper, the Dallas Morning News, seems to agree, giving it a C+

Too bad. I’m sure she was hoping to make a shift from reality TV to real music, but I’m afraid this effort just doesn’t cut it.

Mediocre album and Jessica Simpson is the liability IMO.

The high point is the title track but that’s thanks to Dolly. Once she shows up with her sweet high mountain voice, it becomes painfully obvious how average a singer Jessica Simpson is. Then Jessica goes and overcompensates by yelling some riffs at the end. It sounds terrible and when you think about the lyrics of Do You Know it makes no sense to be screaming them like a banshee.

Speaking of yelling, let’s talk You’re My Sunday and Might As Well Be Making Love. The choruses of those 2 songs show that Jessica still confuses loud singing with passionate singing. She goes hard for these loud high notes and what comes out is harsh, not sweet or emotional. Country music has some great belters who could have made those songs work. The belting’s more appropriate for Might As Well Be Making Love but Jessica never seems to hit those notes cleanly or confidently.

On the flip side of the ledger, Pray Out Loud and Sipping On History are two quieter songs where Jessica sounds lifeless. She doesn’t have that ‘cry’ in her voice that a real country singer would. So it’s like she’s just singing the notes and putting on the emotion like makeup. The foundation may be OK but then she goes and overdoes the blush and the lip gloss.

It doesn’t help that Pray Out Loud trots out cliche after cliche about keeping the faith. Still Beautiful’s the same way. We’ve heard these songs before back when they were written and sung better. The chorus of You’re My Sunday is worse: the lyrics just don’t make any sense together. Apparently hurricanes, fast trains, and insanity all take breaks on Sunday. Who knew?

Remember That and Do You Know are the best written tunes on the album. I’ve already discussed Do You Know. Remember That’s basically a pop tune but the message is inspirational. I wonder how it would sound from someone who’s got a sweeter upper register. I saw Jessica on the Opry singing this and her performance was disastrous. Really offkey.

The last half of the album makes it seem more like a pop album dressed up in steel guitars and some fiddle. Still Don’t Stop Me and When I Loved You Like That are overproduced Diane Warren pop ballads like the ones Jessica used to sing. When I Loved You Like That could’ve been better but it never goes anywhere.

The problem with this album boils down to Jessica Simpson not being able to convey much believable emotion with her voice. She did OK singing lust on Come On Over but it’s her only believable singing on this album. She doesn’t do anything to make any of the other songs her own. Either she’s oversinging so badly it makes my ears hurt or she’s just there, meekly singing notes and words without the confidence to mean them. Jessica’s been talking confidence and this being the real her. But the album shows someone who still doesn’t know who she is and what she’s doing when she sings.

Calvin, I am honestly a little insulted at your admonition to “put aside our preconceptions” and to “think of her as just another new artist.” Seriously? What other new artist would have had this relentless, daily promotion on CMT for two months in advance of her album’s release? If they wanted the songs and the singing to stand on their own, they could have allowed them to do so. Instead, we were treated to one story after another about her perfume, her gas, her concerts, etc, ad nauseam. And now we should just pretend we’ve never heard of her?

You can’t have it both ways.

And after all, lot of folks around here were less than welcoming to Kid Rock, but his latest song won over a lot of them, preconceptions notwithstanding.

Frankly, all those preconceptions are probably the only reason I actually listened to this album, because if she were really just “another new artist,” her initial, lackluster single would have been enough to deter me.

I will not be as detailed as flutterfly was above, but as a general observation, Ms. Simpson’s alternately breathy and shrieking performance does a great disservice to some fairly talented songwriters, whose work, unfortunately, is a little difficult to critique as a result. But you can’t separate the singer from the songs. That’s why no artist covering it (not even the great Linda Ronstadt) could make us forget that “Crazy” is Patsy Cline’s song. I think it is fair to say that Simpson “owned” these songs, too, but not in a good way.

Much has been made of the collaboration with Dolly Parton, but I have to say it is maybe the best example of what I mean. I literally could not listen to it past about the three minute mark, when all of the screaming began. I love Dolly, but listening to this song was just embarrassing, and more than a little bit uncomfortable, for a variety of reasons.

I’d have to grade it a D+, with or without preconceptions.

It’s just painful to listen to. As I am approaching sixty I consider myself a lifelong country music fan. She’s working too hard to convince us that she’s country. Her voice is no better than your average 25 year old American girl. I, too, am weary of CMT’s relentless promotion of someone who just isn’t up to my standards. I listened to most of the songs on this cd. None impress.

I agree with the above comment. I don’t mean to be negative but I would really like to buy a country album again with a wholesome artist with class- ex) Martina McBride, Faith Hill, Shania Twain - we need those types of female artists back. This music, these live performances and these images are not the role models of my choice. Is anyone without blonde hair welcome into country music anymore?

Texas Guy, I apologize if you felt insulted by my suggestion that we put away preconceptions about Simpson. I certainly didn’t mean to insult anybody. I mainly wanted to avoid a barrage of unnecessarily nasty comments from those who have no intention of listening to the music, so I commend you and the others who are able to articulately discuss it from an informed point of view. I can’t deny the media attention she’s received at CMT.com and elsewhere. Ultimately, though, in judging the album, the music either stands on its own — or it doesn’t.

Calvin, you asked us to treat Simpson as just another new artist and also to listen to her songs all the way through.

This put me in a quandry because in order to listen to the songs all the way through, I couldn’t treat her as “just another newcomer”…. I had to give her special treatment.

Like gaveitatry said, it was difficult to make it past the first few seconds of these songs. And if she were truly “just another newcomer”, I would have turned them off well before the end. Simpson either groans or screams and it was truly painful to hear.

I would be interested to hear the Dolly song sung by just Dolly or maybe Dolly and Kenny Rogers, though.

I’m afraid I have to agree with the above comments. Jessica doesn’t seem to know who she is anymore. It seems like “people” in her life have this powerful need to keep molding and re-inventing her persona, history, abilities, etc.
I heard her sing this morning on GMA, and I thought I was hearing things, because all of a sudden she sounds like she has a twang in her voice, which wasn’t there before, or at least I thought it wasn’t. Thinking it was me, I revisited all of her previous promotional performances since July, and noticed that she does indeed have a new twang in her voice that wasn’t there before.

I am really disappointed that Jessica is trying to become a country singer…she is NOT country at all…I really hope that this hype about her will not last long. Being in a so called country movie “Dukes of Hazard” does not make you country (PS…Horrible acting on her part!). Hopefully Jessica and her record execs learn quick that she needs to not continue in the country arena. Anytime I hear her on a country station I turn the channel. Her singing is not good and live performances are horrible. GMA was horrible this morning…
Anyways…I hope that she disappears from the country scene soon!

  • ann says:

    Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 6:33 pm

Why do so many Simpson fans assume people who don’t enjoy listening to her sing really just dislike her personally?

Is it because the only reason fans buy her cd’s is because they like her public persona, so they assume if someone else isn’t buying her albums, it must be because they dislike her public persona?

Though Kid Rock may be a decent fellow, based on his public persona, I wouldn’t let him babysit my kids. But I like his “All Summer Long” song, so maybe I’ll buy his album. If I do, though, it will have nothing to do with his public image and everything to do with the music.

I don’t like any of Simpson songs on this album, so I will not buy her album. It has nothing to do with her public image and everything to do with the music.

  • Julie says:

    Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 6:34 pm

Her live performances are sometimes hard to watch because she seems too nervous and self-conscious. They should probably limit them until she gets more confidence. Who wouldn’t have a low confidence level with all the negative people in this world that love to comment about her. It’s really sickening to hear. The one question I have is if she is so appalling why are you people even wasting your time writing a negative blog. Don’t you have anything better to do with your time?

I watched Good Morning America today. What happened??? Why does she move so jerky like when she sings? It totally distracts from her performance and she seemed to be out of sync with the band. I found myself becoming very uncomfortable watching her. I read that it was a small crowd. That may have played with her confidence which she seems to be lacking. Her weight gain may be from stress as well.

I don’t think I have any desire to listen to her CD now.

    Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

I personally thought that her cd was pretty good and I will purchase it. I really liked “Pray Out Loud” I pray that she will truely use her talented voice the way that God wants her to use it. I do think that CMT and others put her face everywhere a little too much, but they do the same thing with a lot of other artists. I don’t want anybody to hate me for saying this but I think that Carrie Underwood, Sugarland, Taylor Swift are played a little too much on the radio. I think that all three are so very talented and have deserved the right for their music to be played but some radio stations have gone a little overboard a little. Too much of a good thing I guess.
Anyway, I got off the subject sorry. I hope and pray that Jessica stays true to who she is and to country music fans by not doing what Dixie Chicks did.

All you needed to do was look at the peoples faces that was watching–until they would know they were on camera and then you could see the expression change and they would smile.

    Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 7:28 pm

I agree with so much that’s been said. To me, among other differences, there is one major difference between country and pop. Pop singers’ voices are lost in the loudness of the instruments - but in country, the VOICE is what carries the song. Jessica’s voice does not carry the songs. The instruments do. She uses the same breathy-sexy thing that sells pop. Lots of country singers are very sexy….but their VOICE is what carries the song. Won’t buy this album. The singing frustrates me. She needs to concentrate more on the vocals and less on the image. After all, that’s what she is selling - a country image and not a country album.

She is NOT country no matter how bad she wants it & I seriously question the industry, the Opry & radio for accepting her as such. what a bunch of mean, nasty comments. Jessica has put out a really good first album. It would not have matter if this was the greatest album put out this year, most of the people who left nasty comment are going to put down her album just because they, for some weird reason, hates the girl. (Don’t leave a message stating you don’t dislike the girl because you know you will be lying). To say she is not country, well she is from Texas and has always had a countryyyyyy accent. More so than a lot of the new coutry stars. I love every one of the songs on the album, which doesn’t happen much. I’ve always liked when a star take time out and go see our troups over seas, something she did long before she switched to country music, and if Dolly likes her, she must have something unless, you people think Dolly has no taste.

I agree with Love Country…the main difference between pop and country is that in country the voice (and, in my opinion, the story of the song) is what carries the song. I am a fan of all genres of music, but I’ve gravitated towards country in the past 10 years because of the songs that the artists tell and the amazing voices (both male and female) that accompany those stories.

That being said, I admit, I bought Jessica’s album “In This Skin” a few years ago and I enjoyed it. I was a little bit skeptical when she announced that she was “crossing-over” to country, but then again, I felt the same way when I heard about Jewel, Darius Rucker, Kid Rock, etc. But, while Jewel has the gift of story-telling on her side, Jessica falls a little flat in that respect. It’s not that the words are not written, it’s just that I cannot hear the words through the over-emphasized instruments, her slightly brassy voice, and the alternating between the yelling and mumbling.

So, in my opinion, on the two defining aspects that make a country song a country song, Ms. Simpson falls flat on both aspects.

So it will be difficult for her to do well. I think if she didn’t have all that baggage she would’ve done a lot better. Overall, I thought it was pretty good.

bottom line. GET OUT! the girl cant sing. when she’s on stage it looks like shes having a seizure, as well as dressing like a vegas show chick. I haven’t liked her ever since she broke up with nick lachey. that had to be the most stupidest choice she has probably ever made in her life. She thinks tony romo is her “future husband,” HA! she had it and she gave it all away.
she should just leave country music alone.
nobody wants her in this genre.

I actually just listened to this album and reviewed it on Rolling Stone’s site…but, short of rewriting the whole thing again, I’ll say this:

Like some of the other reviewers here, I was prepared to really dislike this record on GP. I’m so tired of the media circus around JS “going country” (Alan Jackson’s good natured gibe at carpetbaggers, anyone?). Her stage costumes are classless. She doesn’t appear to know when enough information is too much to share publicly (beginning with Newlyweds on MTV)…and so on, and so on…

But I was pleasantly surprised at the record. I totally agree that the screaming was over the top, and at times, you really do get the feeling that she is trying too hard to “be country”. The thing is, you either are or you aren’t. You were raised on farm, or your weren’t. You have “country” values, or you don’t. But I digress!

I thought that she put out a fairly decent effort, overall. I would give it C+. If she had started out country, with time and growth, she could be a really big star by now. To be sure, this is not a great record. But I also didn’t turn off the computer, hold my ears and scream, either.

Her image will likely hurt her efforts to become a legitimate country star. That’s too bad, because there is something there, even if it’s just a little.

OK, I really could not distinguish one song from the other for the most part and was astounded at how lame the vocals are (I have no past experience with her so-called music). I think she is just sad. Her Dad started pimping out her very weak “talent” at an early age and now she has no idea what she is or is not good at and has no clue what to do with herself.

After hearing the songs on this album, it’s clear to me that Jessica hit the nail on the head when she “went country”. She has a beautiful voice to begin with, but you can really hear her heart and soul on this album. Good job girl!

OUCH it is pretty divisive here. Yeah she could pick some better stage outfits..I’ll give you guys that. But judging on the music alone..I liked it. She is borderline pop/country but she does it well. I’ll most likely end up buying this one.

Once again everyone is throwing this term out there “Pop”. I’m still waiting for you to define Pop music. If you knew the definition, maybe you would understand Simpson is singing Pop Country now. Accept it. You make it sound like Pop country is the only type of country music there is. Or is it because Pop country is the only type of country you know of?

SAD! Jessica can’t sing. I am sick of her baby voice coming out in her music - take a singing lesson Jess.

I am sorry - “Do you Know” is NOT an appropriate song to sing a duet with Dolly, I have a visual of her and Dolly singing to each other - Way to ruin good lyrics.

She is so unprofessional; did you see Good Morning America this morning?

I won’t buy the CD and I agree with posts above. She really needs to work on her stage presence. All she does is flaunt her body. Come on, if you are an awesome singer, you don’t need to do that. She looks horrible singing. imo she is disgusting. She has a fake country drawl, shows too much cleavage (although I think that is to distract from her vocals) and is trying to compete with her boyfriends ex-girlfriend. She will never be that good!! I hope for her sake she goes back to pop and for all the country fans out there!!! She will never be “country”!!

I love it! Not a big Jessica fan but I have to admit she has a fantastic voice. Made for country. I will be buying the CD tomorrow. To all you haters that say you put aside preconceived notions about her, why are you so jealous of this girl? Even with all the negative press she gets she continues to stand on the stage and be who she is. Can you say that about yourself? Great CD if you keep an open mind.

  • diane says:

    Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

I really tried to be fair to her..and listened carefully..The girl can definitly carry a tune but She doesn’t know how to sing loud without screeching….and there is no “substance” in her voice..all very breathy and light..With all of the new competition of Julie, Kellie, Taylor, and Carrie and the classics like LeAnn, Martina, Reba and Faith..this girl is going to have to work alot harder. Just because you have the best songwriters giving you great songs..if you cant deliver..that is it..I wont buy this album and turn the channel when she is on..I tried to listen to her on the grand ole opry..First of all the dress was distracting..thought there was a dress code at the opry..and she was plain “not good”..Thought you had to deserve to step on that opry stage..guess it doesnt take much anymore…I also would like to hear an interview with her and Carrie and put all this cattiness to rest….Bet most of what we read isn’t true between them..Just watched Dr Phil and he explained exactly how the tabloids operate and I bet it is the same with them..Just wish they would clear the air…And I wish she would cool it about Roma already..Who cares..Just get the music going already.

  • Debbie says:

    Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

The problem with Jessica is her phoniness. She sings like she has asthma. Her enunciation is awful and painful to listen to. She’s too glitz and glamour and boobs to be considered seriously for country music. It just doesn’t fit her persona. She has to push the sex bomb image because that is what sells for her. She doesn’t come off as the girl next door. I also have a hard time believing she can relate to the lyrics of “Remember That”. I am so tired of all the hype over her and all the media blitz. We have all had to endure an overdose of Jessica Simpson and I just wish she would go away. I won’t be buying this CD that is for sure. Poor Tony, run!

Nobody has personally insulted JS. Some have said things about her appearance, but she is an entertainer who makes music videos and appearances on tv. How she looks is part of the package she is selling.

It is fair to comment on her appearance (what she wears on tv or in videos, etc)…it is part of her public image. The people who are buying the package have commented that they like it. Those who are not buying the package have said they don’t.

It’s a comment on her public image… not a personal insult.

However, when her fans call people who don’t share their taste in entertainers names (mean, nasty, close minded, hateful, etc)…that IS a personal insult.

Calvin, thanks for the note. Scanning the thread, there is no doubt that the name-callers are out. It is unfortunate, because I would be interested to know what people think. While there have been a few thoughtful reviews, as well as a few simple “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” type of comments, there are far too many who seem to be trying to instigate a flame war.

Oddly, most of those seem to be Simpson’s fans, who all seem to be reading from the same script, accusing Simpson’s critics of having some kind of character flaw simply because they do not like her music and/or her public image.

With a few exceptions, those who voted “thumbs down” have commented on the music first, but, like it or not, show business is an image business. Like everybody else in the business, Simpson has chosen and cultivated a certain image, and if it is not fair to dislike that image, then it is not fair to praise it either.

Somebody above suggested that “flaunting her body” was comparable to Dolly. That may be true. Personally, I have never liked Dolly’s style of dress, either, but her voice, her songwriting, and her personal charm more than balance it out, and I am a fan. I think it’s fair to say that Simpson’s talents are somewhat less compelling than Dolly’s.

And to those who continue to insist that anybody who dislikes the album has a character flaw, please address your jibes towards the professional reviewers at the Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, LA Times, Slant Magazine, AllMusic.com, Entertainment Weekly, and McClatchey Newspapers, none of whom liked the album. Others, like Rolling Stone, the New York Times and the Associated Press found it mediocre. All jealous haters? Hardly. And we’re not either.

Ok so im from Texas and I have had enough of Jessica Simpson’s music shoved down my throat over the years. I am not saying its all bad, but give me a break….first Gospel, then Pop, and now an attempt at country….whats next rap? I feel that Jessica should stay in the genre that fits her and thats bubble gum pop. Sad to admit I saw her on Opry Live and I was very scared and disappointed….Why did she open the show?I thought there was a dress code? I had to cover my ears in pain when she attempted to sound country with some of her over the top texas twang words…..it was TOO MUCH!!!!! I hope that she nor her Label(and dad) ever try and compare her to the greats such as Patsy Cline, Patty Loveless, Martina McBride,or Leann Rimes and the new amazing talent such as Kellie Pickler, Miranda Lambert, and Carrie Underwood.
Before Jessica steps on another country stage I think she she should go into a dance studio and really watch herself in the mirror….her facial expressions are just scarey and she looks very uncomfortable……
I hope Jessica will think twice before she makes an attempt at a sophmore country album…..

It’s a decent pop album, although it’s not a country album. Compared to her previous albums, this is definately her best yet. There’s no doubt she’s a great singer, that is, when she sings in her natural voice. When she tries to make it sound too twangy (such as in Come On Over) it just doesn’t sound right.

There are many songs on this album that would have been more worthy of a debut single than Come On Over, which is one of my least favorite song on the album. There are too many ballads, which gets very boring. However,
Still Don’t Stop Me is an amazing song and well sung.

Over all, not bad. But she still hastn’ sold me as a country singer and I will not be buying her album.

I’ve been a Jessica Simpson fan since she first came out and I’ve enjoyed a few songs on each CD.There’s been a few that I’ve hated and asked myself who’s attacking her in the studio with some sort of blunt object. This album is no exception.

I personally loved more of the ballad type songs like “Still Don’t Stop Me” “When I Loved You Like That” and “Might As Well Be Making Love”

I think she’d have a hit if she released “Still Don’t Stop Me.”

“Your My Sunday” and “Do You Know” made me want to pull a

This album is no worse than recent albums by young female country stars and she sounds no worse than Carrie Underwood (I use her since that’s who always pops up in comparisons.) I personally don’t think Carrie is all that great. None of the recent crop of female country singers are good live performers.

Overall, I thinks she’s better in pop country than pop.

She needs to do is fix her performances, take a few vocal lessons to find her proper range so she’s not screaming so much. Maybe get her a few tranquilizers to control her excessive body movements when performing. Lastly, maybe someone should get her a stylist that actually knows that clothing is for coverage.

    Overall I give the album a B.

I THINK IT IS A SHAME THAT FORMER POP STARS THINK THAT WHEN THEIR CAREER FLAGS IN THAT CATEGORY, THAT THEY CAN MAKE IT IN COUNTRY MUSIC. IT IS LIKE THEY ARE SAYING, “IT IS A STEP DOWN, BUT HEY, THOSE FOLKS ACCEPT ANYTHING.” SORRY JESSICA, BUT TRUE COUNTRY FANS KNOW GOOD MUSIC WHEN THEY HEAR IT AND IT ISN’T COMING FROM THE POP SCENE.

Jessica is not Country at all and some of these people think they know what country is, its whining, beer drinking and sad songs - songs about your life.
The music with the 4X beat.
The style of singing started back in Hank Williams, Patsy Cline days.
Alan and George are STILL trying their best to keep the country music alive and they are the greatest ever!
These rockers come in and destroy country music sound. Jessica is not a bit country. She needs to be on the Rock station. She wants to destroy all the other country women.
Of course, I am a Carrie fan. This girl at least has talent and is decent to watch.

I went to listen to this being completly open minded and looking at her like a new artist which is what everyone should do. Forget who she is, was, etc…..with that said I spent my money and downloaded the album after the free preview. I feel she did a great job and is very sincere in her singing. She should have done country all along. There are numerous hits on there - Remember, Do You Know, Still Beautiful and more! Give it a chance she is finally being real and opened up her heart!

My opinion is that she came to country just to make money and not because she has worked her whole life to get in the business like the others in country before her. She talks too much about her personal life, and she is constantly in the spotlight because her dad puts her there, not because she belongs there. The day she started out trying to promote her album she said her album was about heartbreak and abuse and so on. She didn’t say who did it to her, but left it out there for people to assume Nick was the one to cause this supposed physical or emotional abuse. She said what she had to say to get people to buy her CD. I have no respect for her as a country singer.

I loved it. Music comes from the heart. She is a beautiful person on the inside…and clearly on the outside. She is from Texas…she was born to sing…and sing whatever she wants. People who don’t like her music…than don’t listen. She didnt write the music for haters…and also look at her supporters..willy ..and Dolly…she clearly has talent.

She came to country because she couldn’t make it in pop. It seems that she will transform herself any way necessary to the music that she is trying at the time. Remember when Britney was the “it” girl of pop? Jessica tried to follow her lead by wearing sexy clothes and doing ridiculous dance moves while wearing a head set a la’ Britney. It was awful! I feel like she is doing the same thing here. She becomes whatever she thinks will sell. This album is awful. I can’t believe that the industry has so easily accepted her. I really can’t believe she was on the Opry! I would think you would have to earn that. Her live performances are embarrassing to say the least. I thought I remembered a time when she first came out and did some ballads. It seemed like she could sing then. I don’t know what happened to her. I don’t think this country thing is going to work for her.

I just dont understand why if we “diss” Jessica we dont know anything about music…Sorry but I have alot of experience with music..performing etc…I think Jessicas country album was not good….Yes I like Carrie and I have watched her mature and improve since American Idol,,,I am still wondering why kid rock is country singing a rock song..Is the cross over that blatant that anything is considered country? And Dolly is just so sweet that she would never knock someone when they are down and when Jessica screwed up her song (as she does alot) of course she took her under her wing….I mean Jessica couldnt even perform on good morning america this week without having to start over…..It is called sound check and rehearsal…I think all of the media attention should cease until she gets here act together..and then let the girl try again….She needs some voice lessons…fashion advice…and then try again…

I’m not a fan and the promotion and spin that has accompanied this switch to country is sickening. CMT’s over the top coverage feels very “bought and paid for”. She has had one bad live performance after another, she had to do a buy one get one free at one concert and still the crowd was small, two thousand at a free concert at another place. She has messed up and started over at nearly every show, even on GMA. She has gotten terrible reviews and boos, but cmt says no-no not so. She is a embarrassment to country and quite frankly to women. And as a Texan, she doesn’t represent Texas at all. There are way to many talented women in country to lose one second to Jessica Simpson. It was ashame that Crystal Shawanda’s debut at the Opry was overshadowed by the hype(and that and DD’s is all Jessica Simpson is)of this Paris Hilton twin.

“None of the recent crop of female country singers are good live performers.”

This is not true! Kellie Pickler is one of the best live performers! She makes great albums, performs great concerts, and has done major touring with some of the best artist in country music like Brad Paisley! She won the CMT Music Awards Performance of the Year award for the best LIVE TV performance in all of country music for the entire year, and she was the only new artist nominated! She just received her 2nd CMA best new artist nomination, and she has ACM best new artist nominations. She won an ASCAP songwriter award. If Kellie isn’t a great performer I wonder why she performs on the CMA Festival main stage and got booked to perform at the biggest fair in the country, State Fair of Texas in Jessica’s home state and before Jessica was booked?

Ever seen Carrie or Miranda Lambert perform? Hell just 2 days ago Carrie had one of the best performances on the CMA Festival. There are quite a few GREAT female artists and performers. These gals are the total package - great singers, songwriters, great albums, and great performers!

Try promoting Jessica’s album without slamming other artists!

I personally liked her cd. I think she is trying to find her way after all she has been through and I think this CD shows it. I also believe her next one will be even better after gaining back some confidence. Did any of you ever stop to think that maybe she is so nervous doing interviews etc because of how mean and nasty people are to her and about her. If you had been as publicly ridiculed wouldn’t you be a little scared and the only way to get over it is to keep doing it. So she messed up on Good Morning America who cares. The last time I checked she was human. She couldn’t hear anything in her earpiece so she stopped and started, oh my goodness we should feed her to the sharks. It’s nice to know there are so many perfect people on this site. I’m not saying you have to like her or her music but stop with so many personal attacks, because it just makes you look bad. Also why would Dolly go out of her way to write her a letter and a song, just to be nice. No most people would send a comment out and leave it alone. Plus none of you know Dolly personally so why make accusations oh yeah to try to prove your own point. I really hope none of you or your children ever get treated as poorly as Jess has over the past few years. At least she is back out there doing what she loves. And no offense most music played on country radio is not really country. People love Carrie (and the girl has talent coming out of her ears) but what is so country about her musci, not really that much, on either one of her CD’s (which i own because i am a fan, Taylor is not typically country either, music is like beauty it is to the eye of the beholder, if it makes you feel something great, if it doesn’t that is fine to but to tell someone they don’t belong and aren’t good enough because you don’t like it is unfair to the person and to the people who do like it. And you want to talk about her faces when she sings, then I guess none of you can bare to watch Jennifer Nettles sing live either (and that has nothing to do with talent).

Everything about her is fake! She performs like with her hand up against her ear like she is belting out something worth while. I am embarrassed for her!!! There are so many talented singers in this business, how does she think that she can even compare to the competition that is out there??? She sounds like a very sick “cow” when she opens her mouth!

Quite frankly, I think it’s phenomenal. I’m on my second listen for the morning.

When she was singing pop music, her voice sounded so digitalized and annoying. But now, that has gone away. This is her natural voice and the style she should have sang years ago.

Country is not in her blood as she prclaims. The only reason she came to counrty is because she could not and would not be exepted anywhwere else. Texas is Only important to her now because she is deperately trying to lash into tony romo’s life. Texas,Cowboys. When she was with Nick she got furious when he wanted to watch football, remember? To believe her stories of going back to her roots is the only entertaining thing to watch her do. That is an honest opinion.

To respond to the comments about not listening to the album or attacking her personally-

I did listen to the album, the songs were pretty well written songs, but her voice sucks. It is not country. To anyone who has listened to this album and likes it, go and listen to a Martina, Reba, Carrie, Taylor, Ashton Shepard album and tell me that Jessica’s album stacks up to one of their’s. I think many of you would be asking yourself, why did this girl do a country album.

To the personal attacks- I don’t know her. I’m not friends with her, but I feel like I do. Because, in interviews, that all she talks about. Either its about Romo, farting, etc. When you open up that much, you bring on it on.

It was ok. The song with Dolly was the best by far because Dolly was in it. But Jessica Simpson is NOT country–never has been. She’s hollywood. That’s what she and her father wanted her to be and that is what she is. Her career is tanking and she’s grasping for straws. It’s an insult to country music and and to country music’s fans and don’t get me started on those outfits she wears. Somewhere Nick Lachey is shaking his head and laughing his a** off.

I believe that most of you have preconceived ideas about her and that’s what you’re basing your opinions on. There are some nasty comments on here true, but there are a lot of good ones. So it doesn’t matter how many of you rally up a WE HATE JESSICA club, if she’s meant to succeed she will. If you don’t like her, why listen? Why bother posting comments, watching her movies, or smelling her perfume? She’s taking her talent and trying to make a life for herself just like the rest of us. Even Rolling Stone, haters of almost all country music with a pop edge, is into Jessica Simpson’s latest album, Do You Know. That’s a really, really good sign. They call it the “most strong-footed move that Jessica Simpson has ever made.” And they cite crisp melodies, chipper mandolins and fingerpicked guitars for backing her vocals so well. Take that naysayers.

Rolling Stone rarely gives anything less than 3 stars. They gave this 3 out of 5 stars

Three out of five stars is what passes for a rave review now? And that “strong-footed move” statement was very much a back-handed compliment read in the context of their assessment of her “decade-long career (that) has been filled with film flops, failed romances and albums that vainly grasp for Christina’s range and Britney’s sex appeal…”

I know CMT is on the Simpson payroll, but this is really embarrassing. On the other hand, I guess this is one of the best reviews out there so far…

Slant makes official what so many of us “naysayers” have said about Simpson’s voice.

They gave her album 1.5 stars out of 5 and had this to say:

“Simpson isn’t able to salvage the effort with her performances either. She operates in precisely three modes as a singer: a mewling, whispered coo; a nasal, dead-eyed middle volume; and belting glory notes at full volume with a strangled, unappealing tone.”

“…but Do You Know only foregrounds her present limitations as a vocalist. She switches between her three approaches seemingly at random over the course of individual songs, gasps awkwardly for breath in the middle of lines, and mistakes singing loudly for emoting, never letting the lyrics on “When I Loved You Like That” or the title track have any impact on her histrionics. That she’s also audibly at least a quarter-pitch sharp on at least half of the album actually makes a good case for the use of Autotune.”

  • Uh-Oh says:

I read the Rolling Stone review and did not interpret it as anything overly positive. And as far as being number one on Itunes, the album has been out one day. So what? It was the most down-loaded for the day? That’s no shocker since it’s the first day and the few that desperately want it are going to scramble to get it quickly. If it was most downloaded in the history of Itunes or for the year then maybe there would be something to it.

She’s tried to melt herself into the Hollywood set and forgot how to be just herself. Even when they take a natural picture of her she poses. She may make it in the country music world but she’s gone too far out to be country in image.

Interesting - the people who love her album say they don’t usually like country music… there you have it! They are not listening to country music now either. The same for the Rolling Stone review. If they don’t usually say positive things about country music … which has been insinuated…then the reason they can give this album a good review is because IT IS NOT COUNTRY. She is selling a country IMAGE and not country music. Just because you say you are something…doesn’t make you that thing. She can say she’s country all she wants. She can try to dress country all she wants. It doesn’t make her music country.

With the economy the way it is, and the price of everything going up,I don’t have a lot of money to spend on a cd. the cd has to be spectacular for me to buy it. I rely on reviews to tell me if a cd is good enough to purchase. From the reviews I have read, and from what I have heard on the internet, I will not be spending my hard earned money on this. Jessica’s singing is simply average and the songs are average. That is just not good enough for me to line her pockets with my hard earned money.

I did not think Jessica would be a good country singer, but her cd is actually pretty good. I really loved “Pray Out loud.” However, I do think she is trying a little to hard to have a southern accent. If she would just sing in a normal voice she would be fine. Overall I really liked the cd and I hope that everything goes well for her. On another note I do have to agree with an earlier statement about Jessica supposingly being a Christian. I’m not saying that I, or anyone else is any better than she is but when your in the public spotlight and your claiming such things, trying to get pregnant with your boyfriend is not something you need to be doing. I really think she needs to work on her public image and decided who she wants to be.

Why are people so hard on Jessica. The majority of the new singers in country music are average, not great. Get real people, the younger singers are actually a cross between country and pop nowadays. As popular as she is, has anybody heard Taylor Swift sing live. OMG I can’t stand to hear that. Jessica has a pretty good CD. People just do not want to give her a chance. What’s the difference, a pop singer going country or a country singer crossing over to pop. They all do it now.

Excellent album!! I think it is a great album and I have already purchased it. I agree, give her a chance. I agree with Rosie. Most singers are average. I also think she is much better than Taylor Swift. Did you see her on GMA? I am sure Taylor is a sweet girl but that performance was painful!!! Talk about average singers she tops the list. (I guess the pre-teens are keeping her album sales up). Jessica’s album is great! The tabloids use her as a punching bag and if El believes EVERTHING she reads in these tabloids (Jessica trying to get pregnant) she is pretty naive. I guess the joke is on us. Calvin was right. This blog should be about the album NOT whether she is a Christian or not, trying to get pregnant or is still with Tony. Oh, also - I grew up with Madonna. Do you think Jessica Simpson offends me? If someone will not buy an average CD, your going to be waiting a long time to buy a CD.

She has had such bad publicity in the past from her reality tv show days and the end of her marriage, give her a chance! Oh and if you havent already, buy her shoes! They are amazing and so comfortable! :0)

Ok, the Album is boring. There isn’t any fun in it at all. My favorite song on it is Come on over. Her voice sounds pretty good, but the quality of the songs are just below average. To formulaic, (oh look I mada a new word). I am a country fan who likes, Taylor swift, the dixie chicks before they lost there minds. Sugar land and Grechen Wilson. They have alot of attitude and this Album is such a snoozer. I would never buy it much less download it. Just so you know I wanted to like the album because I like Jessica Simpson…..ALOT. Romo who? anyway. Not a good album but I think she has a good one in her.

I liked it. I thought “Sippin on History” was great. It made me cry, very sweet. Some of the songs lacked emotions, but I think she is in transition (pop to country) and will eventually put more emotion into the songs, but not all the songs lacked emotion. Overall the album is good and the lyrics are solid. I liked it, I will probably eventually buy it.

#1, where do you think they got their statements, lol…#2, You should make up your own comments and not just agree with someone else’s views.

Personally, I think Jess has a sweet and sincere voice, I think she should be given a bit of room for error on the first album, if indeed there really is any. I am very excited she made the move over to country and I look forward to hearing more from her!

I really enjoyed the music. I’ve been an off and on Simpson fan in the past and have not been a country music fan since I was a kid. But after listening to the first single, I’ve been listening to country stations more often to hear it again. Now, I’ve purchased several country albums on itunes over the last month. I guess you could say, Jess has converted a new country fan. I’m surprisingly impressed by the album.

    Melissa-
I’ve read flutterfly’s reviews on a lot of threads, not just Jessica Simpson’s, and I think the review above has a little more credibility since most of the professional, published reviews on this album agree. I, too would like to see more original comments here - like maybe all the shills reading from the Simpson PR talking points could give it a rest. How transparent. If you like the album, say so - stop attacking the people who don’t. The album will have to stand on its own, and setting up an excuse in advance (”people have preconceptions!”) shows a tremendous lack of confidence on the label’s part.

    Amy-
You said “If someone will not buy an average CD, your going to be waiting a long time to buy a CD” You may be right. That’s probably why the music industry is in such decline. The answer isn’t for the music-buying public to just accept it and waste our hard-earned money on mediocrity. The answer is for the industry to produce better albums.

OK people who love music. I know it is hard to accept people into something that they did not start in and in this case being c-music. BE adults here, step back and listen to the music. Jessica Simpson is a really good singer if you sit and listen to her sing. Take a look at a lot of the other country singers out there they have nothing and I mean nothing on her voice. She deserves a lilttle more credit that you all are giving her. Have you put out a cd lately, be happy for others adn quit dwelling on things. She here and shes been here for a while and shes not going anywhere, adn by the way if you really didnt like it why would you even take time to research it and leave a comment. Please Grow Up, and before you think i am a die hard fan of hers Im not but the Cd is great and I was suprised but I loved it and I know like 5 others from my department at work came in with it yesterday to see if others wanted to hear it. It was good

I was really looking foward to hearing this album hoping she would make a great comeback, but was falling asleep with a Redbull in my hand. Second! Her new album, like all her others, is perfect. She’s not trying to be country, she is. She’s always said she was a small town Texas girl. Give her a break. If you don’t like her new CD its not cuz its bad, its cuz you don’t know music.

Third! So she farts, is Iove and is ditzy. Why do you all judge her so much? Everyone farts! Everyone falls so in love that its all you can talk or think about. Everyone says stupid things once in a while or we think them. Jessica just says them. She’s the most humble and real celibrity out there. Leave her alone!

Fourth! She’s not doing as well as she does on live shows because she’s nervous about this album. She finally was able to be herself and is nervous about what people are gonna think of the real Jessica. She’s invested a lot in this album and is only hoping to succeed.

It’s funny how so many of you can sit here and judge Jessica Simpson and how she doesn’t belong in “our” genre of country music. Country music in general has changed from 20, 30, 50 years ago and a lot of singers like Taylor Swift have very similar qualities to Jessica in terms of pop-like music. Of course I wouldn’t put half of the artists in today’s country music in the same category as Dolly, Patti Loveless, Reba, the Judds and what not because it’s totally two different sounds. Country music is evolving and some might even say today’s artists are not reminiscient of yesterday’s. Jessica is included. If anyone on this blog is a true country fan they would see this too.

Flutterfly’s opinion, and those that agree’d with them, are just that, an opinion. Even tho he did drone on forever with his points, we were all asked to give an opinion.

Most people that buy CD’s and listen to a country radio station aren’t listening to it from the point of view of a junior high music teacher ready to pick it apart at every turn, we just catch a beat, hear a voice and if we like it we like it. Anything can be picked apart(and is). Most likely, the most critical couldn’t do any better or even half as good.

I agree with “flutterfly”!!! Jessica should of statyed POP. I like the Come On Over song, because it’s catchy. But the rest is just her yelling and screaming through the whole entire album. I honestly thinks Jessica can do better then this. I can understand why she wanted to join country music because it’s very respectable and traditional. Not like the crazy pop world with porno looking images and homo activity. I think Jessica should sing about who she really is (like her love for fashion and her family). Instead of singing about her experience of divorce, which is not that bad as she tries to make it. I mean, a lot of people go through it and if it hurted her so bad to leave Nick, then she should of just stayed with him. Jessica always had low self esteem before she met Nick because she said in the past how Nick made her feel confident (her hit song “With You”).

    Since I’m on a roll:
I think Jessica should stop declaring all her love for Tony in the media as well. I think it’s bad for both their careers. All I see is these articles and magazine covers on how he is the “Love of her life”. And there is not one article with Tony saying the same. And I do believe he still have feelings for Carrie Underwood as well. Carrie is a true country legend!!

    Have anyone else noticed:
How Jessica is trying hard to sound country? If you seen the video to “Come on over” and listen how she pronounce the words. And then on Good Morning America, she over pronounce all the words that ends with an “r”. I’m sorry, I’ve been a fan of Jessica since day one, but I can not get with this album or the one before that “Public Affair”.

Heres a thought for all you awful Jessica Simpson haters: Do You Know, ranked 4th on the Billboard 200 this week. SO suck it people, she has found her calling and I pray she does well. Sing on Miss Simpson, sing on.

Here’s another thought…her album sold 65,000 its first week. Her last pop album which was a failure for only selling a disappointing 299,000 total, sold 101,000 its first week. I wonder if “Do You Know” will even make it to a disappointing 299,000 with such a slow start.

So I hope she enjoys that number 4 ranking this week because I wonder how long she’ll even rank in the top 200 with reviews like these:

Jedd Gottleib of THE BOSTON HERALD says : “Poser? Probably. Desperate? Definitely…represents the worst in a genre that’s come to deify Michael Bolton schmaltz while kicking Hank Williams’ legacy to the curb. “D”

Michael McCall of THE ASSOCIATED PRESS says: “…there’s little on Simpson’s down-home transition to propose she is ready to compete creatively or commercially with Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift.”

McClatchy Newspapers’ Howard Cohen says: Despite a title track tailored for her by Dolly Parton (who sings harmonies on the just-OK tune), “Do You Know” is otherwise undistinguished, forgettable “2 out of 5 stars”

Whitney Pastorek of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY says: “…we already have a Carrie Underwood, honey…and she probably turned these songs down. C+ ”

SLANT MAGAZINE’S Jonathon Keefe says…but Do You Know only foregrounds her present limitations as a vocalist” 1.5 out 5 stars

Blake Boldt of COUNTRY UNIVERSE: 2 out of 5 stars “…Are the songs there? Unfortunately not, for the most part, on her first country record Do You Know.”

THE LA TIMES says: “Her struggle is most striking on the title track, written by Dolly Parton, who shows up to harmonize with Simpson. The gap between novice and master couldn’t be clearer.” 2.5 stars out of 5

THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS gives it a “C-” . “So how much should we expect from Jessica Simpson’s country music debut CD? Not much at all. And that’s exactly what we got.”

Chuck Campbell of SCRIPPS HOWARD NEWS SERVICE: “There aren’t as many mysteries to being a country star as there are to being a pop star…but country singers are expected to be able to sing. And although Simpson can belt, she can’t sing.” Rating (five possible): 2

FORT WORTH STAR TELEGRAM: “how do you manage to squander the talents of Dolly Parton? The pair’s title-track duet is an oversung misfire.” “However, if this country career doesn’t pan out, don’t be surprised if Simpson suddenly “discovers” deeper roots in, who knows, death metal or free jazz or Inuit throat-singing.”

ABC NEWS: Allan Raible says, “Jessica Simpson will never have the credibility of the country and folk singers she’s poorly imitating.” “Jessica Simpson is still a sub-par pop singer with low-grade material no matter how you slice it. If you add a dash of vanilla to fertilizer, you still have fertilizer! “

I really liked “come on over.” I didn’t realize who sang it until my son told me. I thought she sounded pretty good. I think if you hate this song it’s because you already hated Jessica. I personally hope she does well with her new album. Why wouldn’t I, she’s never done anything to me. To want someone to fail and not succeed is just mean. I wouldn’t want someone to totally bash on me, especially when they really didn’t even know me. If you don’t like her fine don’t buy her new album. Why go as far as to be so nasty about it.

Another thing, alot of our country artists crossover to pop. Why can’t pop cross to country. When the Wreckers hit the country scene I don’t remember it being a big deal. I thought their album was great.

Ya Know, its kinda funny how all of you naysayers seem to keep comparing her to the past, or saying she can’t sing, or that she is fake. I really wonder what the country music fan, who really doesn’t know much about her and her pop career, thinks of her. And there are those people out there I am sure, especially older folks. And its also funny that she debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart for country albums…obviously some people enjoyed hearing the so called “ear screeching tunes”. I think people need to cut Jessica Simspon a break. I will totally agree that in recent years, her live performances have faltered…but I have watched live performances from way back when she first surfaced where she was actually pretty good. I honestly think it is her confidence playing a part in the bad performances…and maybe that has to do with everyone who constantly wants to slam her. I also can think of a few quite popular country acts that have sounded terrible when I saw them perform live…Rascal Flatts…Surgarland…Taylor Swift… These people and others are not always on their “A” game when performing live, so why should we be so harsh on Jessica.
I think her album is good, and the best out of all of her albums. She is making an effort to make good music and be true to herself. No better place then country music to do that.

Just had another thought about Jessica, but manda beat me to it. I was also going to comment on several artists who have sounded terrible performing live. It doesn’t really faze me because I know alot depends on the sound system and the venue they are performing in. Not everyone is going to sound great all the time, plain and simple. The only artist that I can ever remember never having a bad performance is Martina McBride. Everyone talks about these girls just knowing how to market themselves, isn’t that a part of it? I mean Garth Brooks really isn’t that great of a singer but he knew how to exploit the things he was great at. He is the best selling country artists of all time. He also has a faithfull following(including me) that doesn’t really care about his pipes, just the overall package that is Garth Brooks. I guess what I’m saying there’s more that goes into an artist than their ability to sing. Like it or not, that’s just how it is.

I love this album! I think it’s her best. Most of the people singing now and that includes Carrie Underwood use enhancements on their voice. I do not hear that with Jessica Simpson. I hear a great voice with the old country sound I love. Can’t wait for her next album.

It’s funny how all of you haters seem to keep comparing her to the past, or saying she can’t sing, or that she is fake. I really wonder what the country music fan, who really doesn’t know much about her and her pop career, thinks of her. And there are those people out there I am sure, especially older folks who see her as a breath of fresh air when you look at the new kind of music disguised as country. And its also funny that she debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart for country albums…obviously some people enjoyed hearing these tunes. I think people need to get a life and understand that you don’t ever have all the facts about her personal life.
I can think of a few quite popular country acts that have sounded terrible when I saw them perform live…Carrie Underwood, Surgarland, Rascal Flattsand Taylor Swift. These people and others are not always on their “A” game when performing live, so why should you so harsh on Jessica.
I think her album is good, and she is making an effort to make good music and be true to herself and her fans. No better place then country music to do that. I’m hoping that we the country fans are true and fair, not like pop with their fake fan appreiciation of talent always hating on country music. We do not judge artist on thier personal lives.

I have heard Jessica impson live multiple times and she sounds NOTHING like her album. awful.

I have heard Carrie live multiple times and she sounds EXACTLY like her album. CARRIE ROCKS LIVE and Rascal Flatts and Sugarland. NOT JESSICA SIMPSON.

It has nothing to do with her personal life - her voice is awful.

Purchased this album when it was first released and I been in my car’s CD player since then. She did an awesome job. My fav. tracks were, “Remember That” and “You’re My Sunday”.

If you don’t believe me that Jessica Simpson is capable of a good live performance…got to you tube and watch an older performance of her singing “I wanna love you forever” then tell me she can’t sing or doesn’t have god given talent.

Hmm, you go back maaany years to say she has talent.

That only reinforces the points about her voice; here and now she lacks.

“me”-where do you get the facts…carrie doesn’t use enhancements have you been to her concerts i dont think american idol would produce a fake either…i’m sure there are stars who do use that like pop stars your probably thinking of britney spears not carrie…thats the funniest thing i ever heard

jessica can’t sing live she’s a good studio singer i’m sure she uses enhcancements see this is the difference between pop and country we have the real singers…jess needs to stop buthering country and go back

jessica simpson vocally doesn’t have the xfactor. she sings well but there’s nothing that “wows” you about it. it has nothing to do with her personal life i dont care about her ups and downs and who she’s farting under the sheets with (which by the way thats gross and i know we all do it were human but really show some class for once whats wrong with her thats not a classy country girl thats just a pig…what are we white trash?)anyway when she pretends to be country to sell records doesn’t make you country sure she’s said it’s not about the money it’s a hobbie and a passion of hers since her collection is doing very very well…she doesn’t need the money but why not make the album free or sell it for $1.00 if its not about the money…it is about the sales and tryin’keyword “trying” to make herself a respectable artists and win awards is going to be one hell of a mission. jessica has a lot of comp..and one of them is carrie underwood and whether you love carrie or hate carrie underwood right now carrie is the one to beat she sings so beautifull and can put this chick to shame…behind the miscrophone can jessica be respected like carrie win awards after awards an induction to the grand ole opry, 11 million albums sold, i dont think so…jessica will always be in someone’s shadow she was with britney ad she will with carrie…let’s face it the girl doesn’t have it…

Always thought Jessica had a voice for gospel or country…really glad she finally got a chance to show her skills rather than just her body. I really liked the album…pretty good job for her first try. Hope she gets a fair chance to show us more…

no i am not jealous let me say this for the record since all you jess lovers always think that if someone states an opinion you all disagree with, if i were the jealous type believe me it would not be for jessica, there are so many way more beautiful girls with talent and success i’d much rather be jealous of then jessica “tryin’ to save my career” simpson…just wanted to get that out in the open before jessica simpson fans say anything so pathetic to me they think if you dont like her your jealous stupid right?…i never liked jessica really what is there to like i think that her voice is okay i just cant look at her live for that matter hear her live she is worse live she is a studio singer…for the person that said carrie and others use enhancements no they dont i’ve been to many country artists concerts and they aren’t i dont know why you think that pop artists do use that because they dance alot so thats understandabled. carrie ate a bug for heavens sake while singing i think that would have been a give away if her voice was enhanced just face it there is talent out there way more superior then jessica and when theres is such a person with real talent then credit is deserved, no excuses should be made up for jess…jessica has always been second or third best…britney, christina,
beat her to the ground…and britney cant even sing!! what does that tell you…carrie will beat her…and others not just carrie!…i think jessica simpson should just marry tony romo have babies keep her collection because she obviously has an eye for style…she needs to leave the singing to the pros!!
