CMA Fest: In Your House Tonight

Posted: September 8th, 2008 at 5:54 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

SugarlandCMA Music Festival: Country's Night to Rock is on TV tonight (Sept. 8), and I am counting down the hours. It can't get here soon enough for me. I need some good country music and good clean hosts (Kellie Pickler, Taylor Swift and Julianne Hough) to cleanse me of the dirty feeling I have after watching British comedian Russell Brand host the MTV Video Music Awards. This show was filmed during the CMA Music Festival, which took place in Nashville back in June, and will feature performances by Sugarland, Miranda Lambert, Alan Jackson, Faith Hill and so many others. Tune in at 9 p.m. ET to see how ABC jams 100 hours of live music into one two-hour special.

This show will fall directly into the “Make it Stop!” category. Or the “Make it Pop!” category. Same thing.

RedMaZ, why don’t you just keep and open mind.
    Maybe you’ll like it.

I listen to all music with an open mind. I’ve heard all these people. I know what to expect. I mean lets face it…it’s very predictable. They push no boundries.

Then don’t watch it! Some people don’t mind predictability. No one is right or wrong, it is simply personal PREFERENCE.

Are you the same Laura who can’t define Pop music, but uses the term freely?

RedMaZ, Hey I don’t like them all either but I look over the ones I don’t like and move on.

I want to see Craig Morgan on this show. He was outstanding in concert on Saturday night, June 7. He ROCKED the stadium and Nashville.

I totally agree with you Allison;that British guy was so rude! Especially what he said about the Jonas Brothers! They are one of the few good role models kids have left in America today, and he shouldn’t have put them down. I appreciate Jordan Sparks saying that there is nothing wrong with purity rings.More than half of the VMAs show reminded me of why I listen to country music. I was lucky enough to attend the CMA fest this year and hope to return next year, but it’s always fun to watch it on TV. As a matter of fact I’m watching it right now;Allen Jackson is performing!

RedMaZ, seems to me YOU’RE the one obsessing over POP. To me, it’s COUNTRY!

You consider knowledge obsessive? You’re the one using the term Pop incorrectly, not me.

What was that rock on Faith Hill’s mic hand while she was singing about being a simple country girl from Mississippi?

Grow up RedMaZ! This is a country music festival, an event where people can listen to and enjoy all types of country music. The beauty of country music is that it embraces all types of music. Country music is no longer the music of the 70’s and earlier. It’s changed with the times and will continue to change. You must keep an open mind. If you don’t like it then don’t listen!

I did not like the show that much! Taylormania is getting old to me! Keith and Miranda were good, but Billy Ray Cyrus….YUK! They should have put someone else in his place with some talent!

I think it was great. I enjoyed all of it. I think some of you just like to argue. Country will never be what it use to be. The times have changed and so has Country Music. I think what Faith Hill had on her hand was none of your business. Soon people will fight over how many times they breath….Relax. Have some love in your heart.

Why was Gretchen Wilson’s spot different than all of the others? I love her, but the performance seemed too flawless to have been a real live show during a show. It looked more like a video to me.

Whatever…I’m not going to belabor or fight the issue anymore. Just assume we agree to disagree and let it go at that. We both label music however we want & enjoy whomever we want.

I love country music, but this wasn’t much country with this program. If everyone liked it it’s great, but can we also have a country program?

kuaddict, There was not all types of country music, only one. Pop Country. It seems Pop Country is the only type of country that isn’t changing with the times. Reworked 70’s rock songs, and elevator music doesn’t sound like changing with the times to me. I prefer cutting edge 21st century music. THAT’s having an open mind. Also…I’m not about to comment on music I haven’t heard. I have every right to comment on music I’ve listened to, just as you do.

And to laura…it may be a good thing for you not to debate this issue with me. Your dealing with your opinion…I’m dealing with facts.

  • Laura says:

    Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 8:24 pm

Now everyone listen to RedMa because she is the “ultimate know-it-all” about Pop country, although she really never says anything other than infer she is right and we are all wrong. I have yet to hear about the artists SHE considers “country” or why she insists commenting on all these threads toward a subject she has such obvious disdain for.

I think RedMa just likes to have the LAST word…go ahead, I’m waiting, although I’d rather you go listen to what YOU consider country and shut up about what everyone likes. I can hardly wait to hear your response, am waiting with B-A-T-E-D breath, please queenie, tell us what you know.

  • Laura says:

    Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 8:40 pm

Boy I can’t believe I bit. Ok RedMa, if you need to believe YOU are right & I am wrong, so be it. I will be the gracious one and forget your last line. Although I am still curious as to WHO YOU consider to be “country.”

  • RedMaZ says:

    Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

I can’t help if I put you in your place with facts. I’ve asked you several times to define Pop music, and I’ve also asked who are some of your favorite Roots artists are. I’m still waiting for some answers.

  • countryfan11 says:

    Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Pop, (POPULAR)in terms of country…means a country artist that has a broad appeal, that breaks through the country genre & is recognized by people who don’t/wouldn’t necessarily listen to country music- the FACES of country music that are OUT THERE and present, not just in country music, but the media; the artists that cross over in appeal.

Depends on what era of “roots” you are talking about. I was born in mid-50’s so my tastes have a # of decades of
“country.” In fact, the genre was referred to as Country/Western. One can go with artists such as Willie, Waylon, Haggard, Cash, Patsy Cline, and the like. Or…artists such as Kenny Rogers, Dolly, George Straight, Reba, and naturally a few of these have spanned decades of popularity. So now, you’ll have to tell me if you refer to THESE artists as “country” or “country pop.

I figure the newer country artists are those that people of all musical genres would listen, or could sway to the country genre- as opposed to ROCK, HIP-HOP, R&B, music that stay pretty much within that style/genre, altho certainly could blend to some degree if that’s the arrangement.

  • RedMaZ says:

    Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 9:41 pm

That’s a fairly descent description. Pop music is not a genre, it’s an industry. Pop music whether is be Rock, Hip Hop, Rap R&B or Country is music with general appeal to the masses that is overproduced and overplayed for profit. In musical terms it is essentially conservative in that it attempts to resonate with a large segment of it’s target demographics rather than pushing artistic boundries.

As far as Roots Country/Music…I’m talking about todays Roots artists that make up the rest of todays Country music. Also known as Americana. Which includes Roots Country, Roots Rock, Blues, Bluegrass, Alt.country, Folk, and Red Dirt Music.

  • countryfan11 says:

    Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Ok, I see that, I think I’m really only familiar with folk music, not fond of it, I like some Bluegrass, don’t care for the alternative I’ve seen. I don’t know what Red Dirt Music is. Perhaps I would be familiar with the artists rather than the labels. Give me some names and which they fall under.

  • countryfan11 says:

    Posted: September 9th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Sorry, I had to change my name as there were 2 Laura’s and we had opposing favorites. I felt like a Sybil split-personality lol

  • RedMaZ says:

    Posted: September 10th, 2008 at 5:36 am

Some of todays Roots Country artists…Dale Watson, The Derailers, Roger Wallace, Justin Trevino, Joey Allcorn, James Hand, Arty Hill, Wayne Hancock (Just to name a few) There are dozens more. Red Dirt artists…Reckless Kelly, Cross Canadian Ragwwed, Wade Bowen, Jason Boland, Kevin Fowler (Just to name a few). There are dozens more. Americana/Roots music make up about 90% of todays Music scene, while Pop Music makes up about 10%.

Lets move on to other subjects regarding the CMA festival….who cares what classification of “country” the artists are?!? You either like what you like or you don’t what you don’t….we all listen to what we want, classify into any group we want….there is no changing or converting anyones opinion…because it is just that….an opinion…right, wrong, indifferent….its what makes the world go round!! Let’s discuss Faith Hill……my goodness her performance seemed awkward!! The fans didn’t appear to be into her performance either….with the exception of the 2 girls singing along….that the cameras kept going to……what happened to Faith anyways? Why was she singing Mississippi Girl that came out a few years ago?!? I felt bad for her :(

  • countryfan11 says:

    Posted: September 10th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

Well RedMa, Of those you mentioned, I’ve only heard of The Derailers, Reckless Kelly, and Candian Ragweed. I guess most of what I listen to and like ARE “Pop Country” artists–the older ones and current. Thanks for clarifying & my apologies for earlier comments.

Hey countryfan11, that’s cool. At least now you know what genre you are limiting yourself to. The question is, will you open up and listen to the rest of todays music?

  • countryfan11 says:

I will have to at least give those 3 a listen to since I think I’m only familiar with the names, may have heard CR once.

I have been to CMA Fest twice and i love every minute of it. The music is great and you meet alot of great country music fans there as well. However, I DONT like the ABC special that they produce each year from the CMA Fest. The CMA Fest is 4 days and 4 nights of music and other activities, but ABC takes it and edits it to make it seem like a one night concert. “The CMA Music Festival-Country’s Night To Rock”… it is very misleading. It doesnt show people what the festival really is. They also try to lead people to believe that the special is LIVE by having “hosts” (Taylor Swift, Kellie Pickler, Julianne Hough) They make the special seem LIVE when in fact it took place 3 months earlier. Taylor and Kellie did 3 takes of the opening of the special and us fans were told when to start cheering and when to stop while they were filming. I understand that they cant show every perfomance on the special, but it really bothers me that they turn it into something totally different than what it is. Instead of calling it “country’s night to rock”, why not just call it a CMA Music Fest special and show america what CMA Fest really is. Leave all the scripts and editing for Hollywood. When i went to CMA fest in 2006, they had Carrie Underwood do 3 takes of introducing Kenny Chesney, and that wasnt even the night that Kenny performed. It was the night Carrie was there so they had to tape her that night. So she introduced Kenny 3 times while we sat and waited for the show to start again.
