The Bittersweets Offer Earthy Vocals, Pleasing Melodies

The BittersweetsI am not ambivalent about the Bittersweets, a rootsy band that recently moved from San Francisco to Nashville. I think they're 100 percent terrific. The songs are smart, but still easy to listen to, and I'm very fond of singer Hannah Prater's earthy voice. Plus, you never really know where the melody's going to go, but it's a pleasant journey all the same. They played a record release party Thursday night (Sept 4) in Nashville for Goodnight, San Francisco (out Tuesday on Compass Records). I've been listening to my advance copy almost every day for a month -- especially when I was in San Francisco a few weeks ago -- and I'm playing it all again as I write this. Still, it's the title track that I keep coming back to.

The first time I heard "Goodnight, San Francisco," I figured it was a number pulled from an off-Broadway musical since it sounds like it was written for all the drunks to sing together at the end of the show (or the end of a very late night). If I was looking for a song to close a movie based in San Francisco, this is the one I'd pick. Musically, the band reminds me of Robinella. The producer, Lex Price, has logged a lot of miles with Mindy Smith, and her fans would be wise to check out the Bittersweets as well. If you need further endorsement, Rosanne Cash has this to say: "What an amazing band. They give me hope for the future."

With bands like The Bittersweets, who need Pop Music? This is proof of how much Pop music is behind the times. The Bittersweets have a great Americana, Roots Music sound.

I disagree. This sound is played all the time on radio. Americana/Roots radio. It’s certainly not played on Pop/Country radio, because that’s not what it is. Just as Pop acts are not played on Americana radio.
