Sugarland Reminds Me of Times "Already Gone"

Posted: September 5th, 2008 at 9:01 am  |  By: Whitney Self

Sugarland's "Already Gone" takes me back to that summer I'll never get back. But thank God I had it. I'm talking about the summer of 2005. I left my small town in Illinois and headed to Nashville for an internship here at CMT. I may have been scared to death, but I never felt so free. I'll always remember my mother's words. She said to me, "You're only young once. Enjoy these days, work hard and soak up each moment." And believe me, I did. For a long time I tried to recapture that summer's magic, tried to grasp a piece of that memory. I'm sure this song will also remind you, the listener and viewer, of that magical time in your life. Sometimes I wish I could jump back on that train and relive it all again -- but like the song says, "Life is a runaway train ..."

I like most of the songs Sugarland has done in the past, and it’s sad to see them become “commercialized”. The video is well-done, but not “raw and wonderful” like videos from the past. This video is “generic” - other Sugarland videos were “personal and honest”. Former videos showed the young passion for music Sugarland had - that’s, I’m afraid, “Already Gone”. I still like Jennifer Nettles’ voice and some of the music the duo does - but they’ve become too run-of-the-mill for me.

  • Amy says:

I love Sugarland’s music. It speaks to your heart. If someone finds this annoying, then perhaps they can’t relate to the lyrics in the song. I think that person has a sad sad life and needs to get off the computer and go experience some of the things that Jennifer and Christian are singing about. Keep up the great work Sugarland! I will be waiting on more great music to come.

I recall when Sugarland first started out, or when I observed their music on CMT. There were three members in the group, and not two. What happened to the lady that played the guitar? I don’t want to think negatively, but why is she not still in the group? Did image play a role in getting her discharged from the group - due to her weight? Did the lady simply want out of the group? I thought you all were great together, as a group of three. Thanks in advance for resolving my questions that I have, because I am still a Sugarland fan!

I like the song - it’s another logical progression towards their super-star status in country music history. Since I don’t own a Sugarland CD, I couldn’t tell you if Kristian sings a lot with Jennifer or not. But on all their videos I’ve seen, he mostly just stands around behind her, out of focus, and plays his mandolin, or guitar, without adding any vocals. If you listen to his mix of what he plays, it’s no more prominent than any other instrument featured in their songs.

Granted, this is a very nice vocal from him on this song. I for one would like to hear a lot more of him on their future recordings together. I mean, what’s the point of calling them a group, or even a duo, if he’s not actively participating, and being a featured part of the singing or playing? Any other female singer in Nashville would just be featured alone, and the instrument’s players on their CDs would go unnoticed by the public at large.

Until this song I just heard, I don’t see the point in why she keeps Kristian on. Jennifer is THE lead figure, and practically the only thing you see or hear in focus on her videos. I think Kristian should bale out, and become his own man, and let Jennifer do her thang. He probably wouldn’t sell as many units, but it would free me up as a viewer of her videos, and let me concentrate on her gorgeous face more fully, and not be distracted by his pointy cowboy hat screwing everything up for my visuals, LOL! Signed, One frustrated fan.

I get totally caught up in SUGARLANDS Music. I have read other comments and it’s hard to understand how anyone can say or feel anything negative about these two. I guess that is why ONLY PEOPLE that really GET REAL MUSIC only have GREAT things to say. Either Way I would rather LISTEN to SURGARLAND any day than most of the other music that is out there. OH, I think the VIDEO was FRESH and I Loved the lighting-Jennifer gets prettier with each new song & video-AND Christian is adorable with the most beautiful BLUE eyes! These TWO are the TOP IN DUO! IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED-JENNIFER writes Most of their songs-THE third person was along time ago and never DID Near as much for the group. Try and catch some of the Life of Sugarland and your negative questions just might get answered! SUGARLAND YOU ROCK~~JENNIFER YOU HAVE ROCKED WITH ALOT OF DIFFERENT ARTIST & YOU ARE AWESOME~YOU TWO MAKE ME LOVE COUNTRY MUSIC-GOD BLESS AND I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE~”STAY” IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES AND I THANK YOU JENNIFER-BECAUSE NOW I CAN BE HAPPY AGAIN!! I AM BLOWN AWAY BY THE PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT EVEN HAVE THE RIGHT TO LISTEN TO MUSIC LIKE THIS! (HB BEVERLY) JUST POSTED AN AWFUL COMMENT. SHE POINTED OUT SO MUCH NEGATIVE ABOUT CHRISTIAN-ONE BEING HIS POINTY COWBOY HAT-OBVIOUSLY YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE EVEN LOOKING AT-YOU JUST WANT TO COMPLAIN AND BE NEGATIVE! CHRISTIAN IS NOT EVEN WEARING A COWBOY HAT-I BET YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT TYPE OR WHAT COLOR? WHAT COLOR SHOES DOES JENNIFER HAVE ON? WHAT IS THE COLOR OF HER TOP AND HOW IS IT MADE? (HB BEVERLY) YOU DON’T HAVE TO OWN A CD TO KNOW ABOUT SUGARLAND! PEOPLE THAT REALLY LOVE MUSIC APPRECIATE IT BECAUSE THE ARTIST IS ABLE TO GIVE US SOMETHING THAT CAN TOTALLY CHANGE OUR LIFE OR HELP US THROUGH SOME DIFFICULT TIMES! I PITTY PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT CAN’T BE APPRECIATIVE AND SAY SOMETHING NICE. HERE IS SOME ADVICE TO ALL YOU NAY SAYERS-GREAT MUSIC ARTIST DON’T NEED YOU-WE DON’T NEED YOU!!! AND BY THE WAY YOU NEED TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON CHRISTIAN AND THE INSTRUMENTS HE PLAYS AND HOW MUCH HE SINGS! THEY WRITE MOST OF THEIR SONGS TOGETHER–GO SOMEWHERE ELSE TO BE NEGATIVE-WITH THIS GREEDY WORLD WE LIVE IN AND BEING AMERICA IT IS A SHAME PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND A FEW MORE HAVE TO POST THIS JUNK!! I WILL PRAY FOR YOU AND THE OTHERS-ROCK ON JENNIFER AND CHRISTIAN-THE NEGATIVE WILL NEVER OVER-TAKE THE P O S I T I V E ! ! !GOD BLESS AND MUCH LOVE TO YOU BOTH!!!

I love Sugarland and think Jen is an awsome writter. Many of the songs are heartfelt and this can make them very emotional to sing. True life is different for everyone. A break-up for one is not the same for another. Stay was a very powerful song and shows the “other womans” point on a relationship. So if you don’t like the way she sheds a tear, maybe you have not felt the same way she has (Tina). Keep up the great songs guys! Love you!!!!

I usually don’t b other to leave any comments, but I feel that these two are the real thing and great for country music. Yes what we get to hear is commercialized, but thats what you have to do to sell your music. But on the other hand you can feel the deepness of the ccuntry heart in there music and it is totally awseome. I love the diversity of the writting, not being afraid to take chances with previous material, and yet moving ever forward.
Keep up the good work, you both sound great, and have great dynamics together.

I would like to make several observations about the song and the video. When I read Whitney’s comment from CMT, it put me in the mood to not only think about the song, but also the video. With Whitney’s writing in my mind, I found myself viewing the video of times past. Then, zeroing in on the words helped put the entire package into a format that I thought was beautiful. Thanks Whitney for allowing us to see and feel what you feel. When Jennifer sings, one doesn’t have to look to far to see the passion found in gesturing. Christian towards the end of the video brought in fantastic harmony that would bring a high school vocal teacher to tears. For you see, it brought the entire song together. The video wasn’t directed for one to see a train, but to see other visual avenues that each of us must interpret. An example is the scarf that Jennifer is wearing on her right wrist. Why was it there? One may see it as a tie to her past, others, possibly the though of loose ends sometime that flutter in the wind. But, no matter how one interprets what the director meant in their production, it is an excellent example of where country music and video production is going in the future. Thanks for such good work from Whitney’s blog to all of Sugarland’s inspiring music and videos.

I remember when I first heard Baby Girl and waiting patiently for the CD to come out. This song is just another great song from Jennifer and Kristan. It bring s back some pleasant and not so pleasant memories of my life. They were experiences that I will alway treasure. And as we all know life is nothing but experiences! I’m proud to say that my daughter and I had the chance to meet Jennifer and Kristan last year and they are the nicest two people you will ever meet, even their photographer was nice. Thay took the extra time with us and you could tell true appreciation they share to their fans. I love this song…… Listen to it! It might put you in a better place, if not go eat some choc. that always makes one feel better! Just kidding if you don’t like them, I guess “to each his own”!

    |First saw them in Houston in the KILT radio bar-b-que cook-off tent during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo February of 2005. Became a hugh fan then. Have followed them on the radio and TV and now on the internet. Got to see them this year at Cheyenne Frontier Days and the wait on the rain storm was worth getting wet. Jenifer and Christian came out and could not believe the croud had stayed through the storm. The wait was rewarded with one of the best live shows I have ever attended and in my 60 years I have seen everyone from Johnny Cash,Lorretta Lynne, Ernest Tubb, Mel Tillis, and now Sugarland. They are the best of the young country entertainers we have today

This song guides me into the future about ten years from now when I’ll be on my own. I can’t help but to think about what the future will bring into my life. This song helps me remember to live life to the fullest and don’t look back for you only have so much time here on Earth. Whitney, I;m so very glad you chose this song, for it will help me along the very long road that I am yet to continue to travel on.

I love the group Sugarland and they are so good. I love all of their songs and have both of their old CD’s. And, now since I listened to “Already Gone” I want their new one really bad now. Worse than before I listened to it. LOL
