Pop Beat Garners VMA Nom for Taylor Swift

Posted: September 3rd, 2008 at 4:35 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Taylor SwiftTaylor Swift getting nominated for yet another award is hardly news. But this time, even Swift is a little surprised. She's up for best new artist at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday (Sept. 7). Thanks to a little change to her hit, "Teardrops on My Guitar," the nomination makes sense. After the song's success on country, Swift put some pop touches on it. "We put a beat behind it and turned it into a song that they would play on pop radio. For me, it was a no-brainer," she told MTV. I'll bet there are no more teardrops on her guitar anymore.

Pop radio wouldn’t play Teardrops on My Guitar unchanged? Strange because they played the hell out of Before He Cheats unchanged.

” a little change” to her songs??? Try the truth for once. Taylor remixes every one of her songs for pop radio– not just Teardrops. She remixed Picture to Burn and Our Song too– and would remix her own name if it meant airplay on pop radio. She should just be a pop singer and be done with it– she is on TRL every day, hangs with miley cyrus and dates a jonas brother. She is NOT country and her new album is even more pop then the debut one. She can’t sing anyway– so she would fit right into pop radio with britney spears.

no offense TAYLORISNOTCOUNTRY but what do you know about country music? I bet that you don’t even listen to country that much! I’m sorry to say this usually people who say stuff like that are jealous of Taylor’s success in the country music!

“”she is on TRL every day, hangs with miley cyrus and dates a jonas brother. “”

so that doesn’t make her a country artist? see what i’m talking about! this is just ridiculous!

Hey TAYLORISNOTCOUNTRY, how about you get a life? Taylor is one of the best and most popular singers in country music right now. Who are you to say that she can’t sing? And the whole “she hangs out with Miley & dates a Jonas” thing, who cares who she hangs out with? Carrie was on a pop music talent search & dated a football player. Does that make her a pop singer or football player? No. I love Carrie and Taylor. They are both amazing singers. And Taylor making pop mixes of her music is just her trying to expand her fan base. This way she gets fans that aren’t fans of country music. Basically she took acoustic songs and added a beat to them. What is wrong with that? Why are you even on the CMT website? You are obviously not a country music fan, because you don’t know anything about country music.

Nothing wrong with that Kristen if Taylor could sing. But she can’t everyone knows that. Have you heard her in person. Totally different than the albums. She does not belong in country. She belongs with the pop crowd.

For all you fans who keep saying that Taylor is a GREAT singer….for gods sakes….pull your ear plugs out…..her live shows are pathethic…..she should just lip sync…thats what POP stars do when they perform live!!
Her singing ability has NOTHING to do with being jealous of her fame and fortune……us country fans are very particular and PROUD of our genre of music, because OUR artists are the ONLY ones that sound just like their CD when performing live…….with the EXCEPTION of a few “wanna be’s”…..Taylor being one of them….Stay on the POP side and be DONE with it already!!! Stop giving our country artists a bad name!!!!

As a matter of fact, I have heard Taylor live, and she is amazing. She definately sounds like her album live.

“Pop radio wouldn’t play Teardrops on My Guitar unchanged? Strange because they played the hell out of Before He Cheats unchanged.”

Wouldn’t that make Carrie a pop singer?
If pop charts play her music then its pop right?
    Thats what you are saying.

Once again I love Carrie, and I don’t think shes a pop star, I’m just proving a point.

She is beyond a doubt the least talented person who is successful in country music no all music today.

Changing your music to get airplay in another genre just proves how little she actually cares about the music.
For her it’s all about the money and fame.
MTV can have her and good riddance.

lisa, UMMMM Carrie co-wrote her last three #1 SINGLES! Yep thats right her last 3 out of 7.

Carrie fans aren’t so much jealous of Taylor as we are sick of her self promoting, bragging self. Come on if you tell the sheeple of the world (You know who I’m talking about) how great you are for long enough eventually they will believe it, Taylor is a master at manipulating people no doubt, I just can’t wait until she tells ya’ll to drink the Kool aid and then we can be done with it.

craig shelburne, someone who is suppose to know something about country music talent, takes photos of swift at one of her concerts, what is he thinking about attending and reporting on her all the time. i don’t think he knows what talent is. he needs to get off the swift band wagon.

Neither Taylor Swift or Carrie Underwood should be considered Country Music. If it were not for the guarantee of American Idol then Carrie would not be here. At least Taylor Swift found her way in at her own will. However Taylor Swift cannot sing a note and her fans are totally deaf if they think she can sing. I will NOT spend my hard earned cash to line the pockets of two people whom the Country Music Industry maintain. That is SO WRONG. It is so OBVIOUS that they are being used to generate CASH. There is so many more Country music acts that are PURE Country. My guess is your probably really dissatisfied with my blog entry about now. What about the rest of the Country Radio listeners who tune in daily in hopes that there local radio station will play there favorite artist’s. Lets talk about what is unwarranted. It is known that a percentage of Country Radio will not play a new release until it hit’s the top 20. How can a song make the top 20 if it is not played when requested ? Hmm Last I knew you had to listen to a song before you decide weather you like it enough to go and purchase it. I have heard it all now. Quite a while back while commuting with a friend to work one morning my co-worker had Country Radio on and it was suggested that people purchase a I tunes card to upload there favorite Country music singer’s newest release in exchange of there much loved new-fangled release as a request. Modern Technology has given us a compact little square or rectangular shaped box that can house many gigabytes of music , videos you name it. I even own one and it is a great invention. Except some people can not use them at work. Radios have worked for us for a very long time and now we are subjected to Pop Music choices on Country Radio. With this country ‘s economy in such bad shape, Country Radio is going to loose committed listeners in time. If Country Radio is so “BIG” then there is room for a much larger variety of Country artist upon request without making the Top 20. Good Luck with your greater than before opinion Here’s mine> First of all do not tell me to get a life. Secondly I have my own opinion and have the right to express it. Thirdly Do not even try telling me I am not a Country Music Fan I have been listening to Country Music since 1962. Country Music and Radio has let me down after all these years! Hell I have already spent the last 8 months supporting Classic Rock n Roll Radio at least they have a variety of great music that is not POP. Thanks Classic Rock Radio!!!

Ive said this many times before Taylor can not sing!! Not even close to any of the country, pop females out there!! There is so many talented female artists that can sing yet everyone thinks Taylor is the greatest!! I agree with whoever said that she is more interested in lining her pockets by throwing temper-tantrums on the stage that she could care less if they change her music–if I had wrote music I sure would not let them change it just to get more airplay– at least other artist defend their music and dont permit changes to it!! Taylor can write songs but she should leave the singing to the pros!! I read somewhere that her new album (includes t-shirt,bracelet and something else) but the cost is $75 And yes Taylor is only 18 and thats what the big deal is all about!!!If you think she can sing watch her “stripped down performance” here on CMT and listen to the song about the pickup truck!!!

For everyone who has posted here (including Alison Bonaquro)…Taylor Swift has been, and always will be a Pop act. She happens to be a Pop Country act. Apparently people here on these blogs do not know the definition of “Pop Music”. It would be in your best interest to do some research on Pop music before making a fool of yourself.

    YIKES !

WHY do we always have to define music genre? Can’t everyone just listen to whatever they want. Who cares if Taylor is up for a pop award. OK she not the greatest singer but she sure isn’t the worst. I’d love to see a “country” artist win at the VMA awards.

  • RedMaZ says:

Swift has been up for, and has won Pop awards already. They just happen to be Pop Country awards. There are music genres for a reason. This is one of them.

I find it funny that people get so worked up about celebrities. They are just like everyone else. People do what they do to make money. The whole idea of being anonymous on the internet turns us into experts or whatever to spout our opinions to others. If you don’t like her then don’t listen to her. There are a wide variety of music that takes some form of talent to produce whether its written by the artist or just performed by them. Everything done in the entertainment business is designed to make money for them. Sure the celebrities will “donate” money and time for charities which in all is a good thing but they do get tax breaks for every one that they do.

Why do people say that Taylor is bringing new fans to country music?!? When she reworks her songs to sound POP so that the POP world will play her music on the radio..aren’t those POP fans still POP fans? I seriously doubt that the listeners of the jonas brothers, miley cyrus, and rihanna are running out to listen to the likes of Martina McBride, Sara Evans, and Brooks and Dunn!!!! Come on Folks!!! Lets get real!!!

  • RedMaZ says:

McBride, Evans, and Brooks & Dunn are Pop too. Pop Country. Just as Swift is. That’s getting real.

  • RedMaZ says:

Billboard? I said nothing about Billboard. Does Billboard list Roots Country Charts? Basically all of todays country is either Pop or Roots. Swift, McBride, Evans, Jackson, Strait have never been on the Roots Country charts.

if the damn “roots” country was any good it would be on the billboard charts because millions of people would like it. Instead of just a few dumbasses who feel the need to get on here and disrespect the country music that most people like. THAT IS WHAT MAKES IT POP COUNTRY…BECAUSE IT IS POPULAR. If roots country was popular then it would have the HONOR of being pop country too!

Everybody makes great points but few are addressing the primary issue.. DOES “CHANGING OR REMIXING” YOUR CURRENT MUSIC MAKE YOU A “SELLOUT” ?? This has nothing to do with Carrie Underwood, or anyone else.. It’s irrelevant that Martina, Sara, and many others have better live voices than Taylor. Does Bruce Springsteen have a good live voice? of course not, but he’s an incredible entertainer..
Let’s get one thing straight, Taylor Swift is EXTREEMLY Talented… Like her or not, weather Country, Pop, or not a music fan at all, anyone who writes plays guitar and sings their own songs is VERY talented.. Not to mention writing #1 songs on a regular basis..
And I too am a huge country music fan, and we are passionate about our genre.. Our music has feeling, meaning, heart and soul.. Taking a beautiful love song, adding bass and an extra beat to sell it to someone else is demeaning, degrading and deminishes the importance of the original music..
this may be an exageration, but, does adding a drum or guitar solo to beethoven make it rock and roll?
I love country, new and old, and I am deeply disappionted in Taylor to stoop this low.. I will reconsider purchasing another album of hers..
And let me also say, I beleive she has a right to express heself to any genre, I may not agree with it, but if you want to write pop? Write and sing a pop album … Don’t CHANGE a beat, or devalue the importance of a song..

maybe we should rap Christmas songs. ?

Sa-Sa-Sa Santa Claus…… Sa Sa Sa Santa Claus…. Sa-Sa-Sa Santa Claus is c c coming to town.. WORD
