LeAnn Rimes Wants to Help Psoriasis Sufferers Stop Hiding

Posted: September 3rd, 2008 at 12:12 pm  |  By: Chris Parton

LeAnn RimesLeAnn Rimes is teaming up with the American Academy of Dermatology and the National Psoriasis Foundation to launch the Stop Hiding From Psoriasis campaign to raise awareness about the disease and encourage those affected by it to seek help. Rimes herself was diagnosed with psoriasis when she was 2 and has said that hiding it from the world for so long took an emotional toll as well as a physical one.

"Having battled severe psoriasis my whole life, I have gone to great lengths to hide my condition, especially as a performer," she says. "Over the years, I've had to deal with the emotional and physical toll psoriasis has had on my self-esteem and confidence, but today I no longer let psoriasis define who I am or how I feel about myself. I hope by joining this effort and sharing my story, others will be empowered to stop hiding from their psoriasis and better manage their disease and not let it limit them or their aspirations."

By joining up, you can help Rimes begin remove the stigma placed on close to 7 million Americans living with the disease.

This moved me to tears! Finally a respectable well-known celebrity who is speaking out about psoriasis! I pray for a cure someday and hopefully with more advocacy, there will be one. I’m tired of living in my psoriasis plagued skin. I want to feel beautiful again!

Here’s psoriasis in general face. Don’t jump right in because it’ll feel like you’re in psoriasis. If there is awareness you should need from Psoriasis campaign, it’s the foresight to lose smartly.

I always wondered about whether or not celebrites had psoriasis. I think it is great that Leann was brave enough to come forward with this. I am sure there are people that will feel a lot of support from her actions.

I have lived with psoriasis for the last about ten years. It was hard trying to hide it while going through college, trying to meet a guy, thing people in their early twenties do. It is nice to know that a celebrity has psoriasis and is willing come forward and share it with everyone. People get the picture that celebrities are perfect, but they are just like us. Thanks for sharing LeAnn.

It makes me quite angry that LeAnn Rimes will not say what kind of medicine she is using for her psoriasis. That leads me to beleive that she is on one of the most expensive ones that us poor folks can’t use.

I think it is amazing the LeAnn was able to come out and express her feelings about living with Psoriasis. I was diagnosed with the disease 3 years ago, and it has definitely put a strain on me physically and socially. I am only 21 years old, and I feel so abnormal as opposed to my peers. Hearing that LeAnn Rimes has been through the same situations that I have has made me gain more strength on the fact that I cannot let Psoriasis take control over my life.

LeAnn Rimes is taking the drug Humira…I have tried it and didnt work well for me. The drug is very expensive if you don’t have insurance. I’m on a similar drug Enbrel that seems to work better for me. These drugs have to be self injected..either once or twice a week…depending on the dosage prescribed by your doctor. For the ones who have psoriasis…I know exactly how you feel. I have had the disease for approximately 17 years. It started while I was in college and slowly progressed to the point where most of my body was covered. Over the years, I have tried many different treatments and most of them were hit and miss. This latest drug seems to have been the best for me. I’m still not completely free from psoriasis, but enough to the point where I can manage. My co-workers dont seem to mind…especially when I explain to them about the disease. The people I’m having to arrest while I’m at work dont seem to mind….I’m sure they have more to worry about then a red spot on my arms or hands..hahaha Later…and for those who are dealing with psoriasis…keep your head up and stay strong!!!

I never had psoriasis until I had heart by-pass surgery. About a year later it appeared on my feet and hands. First I had fungus on my feet. They said the shock from my surgery brought it out. It is under control right now on my feet, but it is still on my hands. Dovinex cream cleared it up on my feet but not my hands. I have tried so many things on my hands but nothing seems to help much. I took methetrexate for almost a year and that did nothing for my hands and brought some back on my feet so I stopped taking it. If anyone else has it on their hands and has found something to help, please send out your secret.
