Lovin' a Lost Duet From George Jones and Tammy Wynette

Tammy Wynette and George JonesAfter all these years, I figured there couldn't be any lost duets between George Jones and Tammy Wynette. So imagine my surprise to find the previously unheard "Lovin' You, Lovin' Me" on Jones' new album, Burn Your Playhouse Down: The Unreleased Duets. The production sounds a little bit hokey, since it was recorded in 1977, but I still find myself joyously singing along (with George's part, that is). It's at the end of the album, and you can listen to the likes of Dolly Parton, Shelby Lynne and Vince Gill along the way.

The album opens with George Jones and Georgette Jones, the only child from his marriage to Wynette. I really like her voice - clear, country and unique. She's not trying to embody the Tammy role, since the song is about a father-daughter relationship that finally gets back on track. But she does have some of those same vocal qualities from her famous mother, such as going up and down the musical scale like it's no trouble at all.

I'm thankful that somebody is digging up these forgotten performances like these, which were mostly outtakes from two of Jones' duets albums. Makes me wonder what else is out there.

What a wonderful surprise! Sort of like a diamond that just shows up on the kitchen counter one day.

Reba also recorded the song you are referring to during her Mercury stint. I think it too was an outtake that didn’t make the album and was released on one of the many Mercury collections of her material - namely the ‘Oklahoma Girl’ set.

Yes, I enjoyed the album too, including the Wynnette duet. It just sounds like old times to me, which is ironically refreshing.
