You're Looking at Country in Loretta Lynn's House

Posted: August 14th, 2008 at 11:39 am  |  By: Craig Shelburne

Loretta LynnDid you know you can go inside Loretta Lynn's plantation home? I never realized it until this week, while driving back from Memphis, that she offers tours of the majestic, Civil War-era house that her husband Mooney Lynn bought for her. It's a must-see for fans of Coal Miner's Daughter, since several scenes were filmed inside. And that Crisco Kitchen! It hasn't changed since the 1960s, but I've been noticing that same bright orange décor in a lot of magazines and catalogs lately. Like the Coal Miner's Daughter herself, you just never know what's going to come back in style.

The tour includes a replica of her childhood home in Butcher Holler, Ky., although this one's bigger, since they filmed part of Coal Miner's Daughter in it as well. (I've been to the real one. It is unbelievably rustic.) There's also a "coal mine," so that tourists can understand just how hard Loretta's dad worked to make a living. Still, nothing beats that house. When I was a kid, my mom sold Avon, so I instantly recognized one of the plates on kitchen wall, some of the perfume bottles in her bedroom and a handful of the thousands of knickknacks in her curio cabinet.

Today, she lives in a house behind the mansion, and her bus was parked in front, since she's about to leave Hurricane Mills for a few shows in North Dakota. I liked knowing that she was nearby, even though she didn't pop in during the tour with fried chicken and chocolate pie. (Secret wish.) Yet, with its handmade curtains and big, open rooms, her famous house makes you feel right at home.

My husband and I, and our daughter who was only 4 at the time (1970) went to see Loretta at the Mosque in Richmond. My daughter wanted to meet Loretta so I sent her a letter and when she came on stage, after her first song, she has for Kathy Lewis, but before we could our daughter to say anything someone else yelled and said they were Kathy and for her to sing, “Hey Loretta, I love
you more then an Irish Setter.” At break, Loretta remained on the stage though and we went up to the stage and she took our daugher on her lap and talked to her. We went to all her shows that were close enough to us. We couldn’t travel much back then. We want so much to see her again and trying to work it out with our work schedules now. Loretta had a bad experience at the Richmond, Virgina Coliseum, so she has not returned to Richmond. I don’t blame her….It was not right. She’s a “class lady” and we love her.

Hello Friends, Loretta Lynn is in a class of her own ! She is great…I just love her so. I have a tribute tattoo in her honor. It has a coal miner and it reads: Loretta Lynn - Coal Miner’s Daughter…I am so proud to show it off. I have been to Loretta’s ranch way too many times. It had been a great dream of mine. One day, while living in the state of Michigan my husband and I were on our way to Texas (where I currently reside) and to my surprise he was waking me up cus I had fallen asleep part of the way. I said, “let me sleep” and he said, “open your eyes and look out the window, are you sure you want to sleep more?” Lo and behold, these front gate steps were right in front of me while in the back ground I could hear birds chirping and the morning crackling. I can still hear it to this day. He took me to Hurricane Mills, Tennessee…..The best gift I have yet gotten in my life. Ever since, I have made it a point to go to Loretta’s at least once a year to one of the shows. Her family is so awesome. I love to go visit Betty Sue at the flea market. She makes you feel right at home. I have given Loretta many gifts and some of them have made her museums in which they still stand today. I’ve got to say that she treasures her fans…and I am so proud to be one of them. Friends, if you haven’t yet been there, make it a goal. you will never regret it. Just like she says: Come as you are and do as you please atmosphere…..that is what it is like…………………………….God Bless You all and God Bless LORETTA LYNN !

I grew up listening to Loretta Lynn. My mother would play her records. her music was so much a part of my life it has alwasy felt as if Loretta herself has always been a art of my life. Both sides of my family is from KY and some real near where she grew up. I’ve always wanted to go to Hurricane Mills and I’ve almost saved enough to finally be able to go. I think if I ever got to just see her I would faint :). But I can’t wait and I’m hoping to make there for her concert in Sept. My heart is pounding right now with excitment thinking about it. She will always be the quintessential ledgend and lady to me. Nothin’ or nobody can top her. Not now, not ever.

If you have seen Coal Miners Daughter movie, and I know you have…..this trip is a MUST! Just being in the same home where Loretta raised her family and came to retire after many long hours on the road is just goose-pimpling wonderful! You won’t be disappointed, so go on and make that trip!! Not to mention the 18thousand sq ft museum that you will never see everything in several trips but the whole Ranch is the cleanest, nicest place I have ever been on vacation, you will never want to leave!! In fact, I try to go twice a yr also, they are always adding something different but the only thing that does not change is the love and peace that you find in Hurricane Mills, TN……

As I was growing up in the 70’s, my mom would listen
to Pop Goes The Country on radio. Every day, I would hear the great’s like Dolly, Tammy and Loretta. The 3 Queens of Country.
Well, Ive listen to all 3 over the years, and went and got the records. Seen Dolly once in 1989 and then this year. WOW Dolly kicks butt. Never had the chance to see Tammy. Years of seeing Loretta touring NY State , I never got to see her. Then this past Oct, Loretta was going to be at TurningStone. God know’s O had to get tickets. Which I did. I took my mother who at age 67, had been a fan of Loretta’s for many years. Let me tell you, out of ALL the show’s Ive seen. Loretta, made me speachless. When she stepped out on the stage, I cried. Right there in front of me, one of the GREATEST Female Country singer’s. WOW I lost it. I never knew just how much, someone can effect your life with their music. Loretta is a true Country Queen. Love you Loretta Lynn.

Loretta is and always will be the undisputed queen of Country Music!! Why the Queen? Presentation is everything and Loretta is the classiest act that country music has ever seen. With the gowns that she wears and the way she presents herself it is no wonder she has had that title and will hold on to that title forever. There are thousands of female singer and they are all beautiful and talented. But the One woman who will always reign at the top of this crop is the “UNDISPUTED QUEEN” Ms. Loretta Lynn. Loretta I will always be grateful for the kindness you have shown me when i have gotten to speak to you. And we here so much on how you have missed out on your childrens upbringing, but by knowing most of them and seeing how they are with your fans YOU are the mom of the Centuary. They adore you and rightly so! If I never get the chance to see you again in concert I will have the memoies of the ten times have. God Bless you Loretta and family, Hi Cissy and Betty Sue.

    Love Mark

    Hi Loretta!!
I grew up listening to her ALL day long and every day since I was 5 years old. My mom would play her albums ALL the time. Her music grew upon me and as i got older I found myself BUYING her CD’s. It is unbelieveable how someones music can effect your life, and insipred me. I actually feel like she became a part of our family since she was involved in it every day. I really miss my younger years feeling as if she was a part of my family. My mom still plays her music every day. I am a drummer and had always played Rock, now I play country, yes Country. I had just moved to Tennessee from New York to chase my dream which is probably just what it is.. A dream.. But My biggest Dream would be to be able to play with Loretta, again another impossible dream but i’ll keep it.. I did visit her home but didn’t get to meet her…hopefully someday I will. I know my mom is dying to. She still lives in NY. So know that i’m closer maybe, just maybe my dream will come true.. luv ya Loretta, Love Ricky Bower..

    Hi Loretta
I first went to her concert in 1988 when she and Conway Twitty and George Jones did a living legends concert tour here in Seattle and I really enjoyed her show alot. Then I flew to Nashville in 1989 when a friend of mine took me there with her for a few days. We visted Loretta’s ranch and we took the tour of her house and I will never forget the wonderful experience going in to ther big mansion and I could easily get lost in a big house it makes me want to live in a big house like Loretta’s house I love the crisco kitchen too.

I do remember going to Loretta’s ranch again in 1992 over the 4th of July weekend when I was visiting my friend who was living in Nashville and it was a packed house that evevning we were there for her concert that day and I will never forget how sweet she was when she did sign autagraghs that nigt after the show. She just smiled at me when I tried to say hello to her and that was the sweetest gift I have ever gotten from Loretta.

I have known her since I was a teenager and I still love her with all my heart too.

I went to see her when she came here to Seattle a couple of years ago for the Bumbershoot festival that goes on every year at Seattle Center and I took my mom with me and it was a great concert and I really enjoyed it.

I also remember the haunted TV special on Loretta’s mansion that I saw on the travel channel not long ago and it does bring back memories to me when I took the tour of her house years ago on my first visit to her ranch when I was a young woman.

I do hope to go to see Loretta again someday.

I first saw Loretta Lynn live in concert many moons ago ,(possibly 25 yrs), at the War Memorial in Syracuse, NY, as part of the Living Legends Tour with Conway Twitty and George Jones. I was so blown away with her performance and ‘vibe’, that shortly thereafter, I became a member of her then Fan Club, and have seen her every time she has come anywhere near Syracuse, from the Cortland Country Music Park, to the NYS Fair, to the Turning Stone Casino. I have every one of her recordings, my sweatshirt from that first show, and my original tour/picture book (that may have been from the Fan Club-it has a centerfold picture of Loretta in pink sweats). However, I never had anything signed by Loretta during all those concerts. Well, I’ll NEVER! forget how wonderful she was to me when she had her manager take the sweatshirt from me so she could sign it. Wrapped in the sweatshirt, I had every single cassette/cd insert, etc, and she signed EVERY single one! I didn’t have the tour book with me, but her manager gave me an address to send it and she would sign it. At first, I was afraid to send it, that maybe I wouldn’t get it back, etc, but I did send it, and received it back all signed, as promised!! I couldn’t believe it! I have all the items to this day. I have since met Peggy Sue and Crystal Gayle numerous times at all their shows, and they are always so Wonderful to me also! I am very blessed to have met Loretta and her sisters, and am looking forward to seeing Loretta at the Turning Stone Casino on December 4, 2008; I just wish that I could meet her in person that day to let her know how much her actions and her music mean to me. God Bless You, Loretta and family.

I have to agree with the others, Loretta Lynn is the “Queen of County Music”. I have to meet Ms Lynn, or even get to a concert. Growing up in a large family as well, we didn’t have to chance to go to concerts or travel. Now that I am much older, I have begun to do some traveling. I was so surprised when I visited “Twitty City” as it was when Conway was alive, and more so surprised when Conway himself come out and visited with his fans. Two of my all time favorite people in Contry music are Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. Now my dream is to meet Ms Loretta Lynn. I see here that her mansion is open for visitors. this is one trip I will make. We wish the continued love, life and family for Ms Loretta Lynn.

September 27th was my very first Loretta Lynn concert and I an 52 yrs old. I have loved Loretta as long as I can remember.I seen it all while I was there for three days. When my husband and I drove up to the mansion,I cried because I couldn’t believe I was really there. I grew up with six sisters and four brothers me making 11 total. So I know alot about living with a big family. When it came time to leave, it was so peaceful there. The only thing that didn’t happen for was,to have gotten to speak to her and maybe a picture. Everyone had told me who had met her before that she was down to earth and just a sweet woman. I knew she was when she first came on stage, you could just tell. But, The only true wish I had hoped for didn’t come true. When we were leaving to head for home on Monday the 29th, we stopped at Cissie’s store and I got a picture with her and I bought her T-Shirt and she signed it for me so, I figure it was next to the best thing to Loretta. (One of her babies) I cried when I got in the car because it meant alot to me. Cissie is down to earth, no makeup with her hair in a ponytail and she still was pretty to me. So, Loretta you probably want read this but I wanted you to know that it has been a wish of mine to meet you one day. Hopefully that will come true for me. I just loved the ranch! I hope to visit again soon it was just what I needed. Love Always, to you and the Lynn family.

    Hello Loretta,

My mother is a distant cousin of yours. She is the daughter of Melissa and Willie Webb who lived in Sergent, Kentucky. I believe my Grandpa and your Dad did a little chicken stealing in their young days and hid in a hayloft for a while afterward. My Mom is 87 years young and still going strong, helping me in the warehouse I run. We distribute new items to the needy people in the area from contributors such as Avon, Braun, Gillette, Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond and many more. Each week my mother helps me distribute the items to our charity organizations and helps me restock our shelves. She is a true Webb and never misses a beat. She always talks about her brothers and sisters going to meet you when you were home once and she was not there and did not get to go. I was wondering if you could slip her a card this Christmas? It would absolutely make her life complete. We all absolutely love you. If you could, I would be happy to get her address to you if there is an e-mail I could send it to you.

Thanks for making so many people’s lives richer with your beautiful voice and wonderful personality. People like you are far and few between and we are blessed to be part of your distant family.

    Hi Loreetta,

I just wanted to say I saw you in concert at your home. What a wonderful experience it was for me. In so many ways. I grew up listening to your music. My older sister Terri and I use to sing your songs all the time while we were cleaning up after 9 brothers and sisters.

When I saw you I was brought to tears, I wanted so badly to work up the nerve to just come up and shake your hand, you see my sister was able to shake your hand years ago and she talked about it all the time, but my older sister passed away a few years ago and I just wanted to touch the hand that my sister had touched. I know that sounds silly, its hard to explain.
I met two of your daughters and they were so sweet and gracious.
Thank you again for such beautiful music, I can tell its from God and your heart.

    Hello,

I must say that I listen to your music almost everyday. A very long time ago when you was in Illinois, I took my girls to see you and Conway Twitty at the Palmer Civic Center, which was the best. My girls are now grown up but they never forgot that evening. One day I hope to make it to see your Ranch, actually its a dream of mine, that more than likely won’t happen with the way jobs are, lost mine after the near fatal wreck. If there is a fan address a person can write to, that you might respond back to, I would like to have it for my girls, who adore you as much as I do. The joy it would bring to them. Keep up the wonderful singing so that my grandson will one day love to listen to, he’s only 15 months now but he responds when he hears you sings, even learned a couple of new words hearing your songs. Your the best.

Does anyone remember saving and redeeming cigar bands for free merchandise? My grandfather used to smoke Phillies tips cigars. He would save the paper bands and I would redeem them. I think I was eight or nine years old when I ordered some LP’s(mid to late 60’s), one was a loretta lynn album. I fell in love and still am! I have seen her in concert many times, actually spoken to her a couple of times! She is exactly what she presents her to be. A true lady in every sense of the word.

    Hi Loretta,
If by the grace of God you read this, please fullfill a lifetime wish of mine. I grew up listening to you and Conway Twitty (my mom was the biggest fan). One time, my dad surprised my mom with a CT concert. Her greatest possession was a photo she got of her with his arm around her. I grew up cherishing the dream of such joy my mom had from that photo. My prayer is to duplicate that dream by getting a picture with you to share with my 7 year old daughter (who is a big fan too). My husband bought me tickets to see you in Denver on June 10th, 2009. I will be the firefighter in the audience with a dream and too excited to breathe!! Please allow one brief moment of your time to fullfill a dream and bring joy in the memory of my mother. Thank you and God Bless You!
