Darius Rucker Rocks His Own Roots

Darius RuckerYou can tell how cool a promotion is by who’s clamoring to enter. The Roots of Rock thing that MasterCard is doing is one such contest. If you win, you not only get to see Kenny Chesney (or Jon Bon Jovi or Eric Clapton) perform, but you get to meet him and see where he got his start. So, who wouldn’t want to enter? Darius Rucker wishes he could. But he’s a spokesperson for the sweepstakes, so that pretty much takes him out of the running.

After selling more than 21 million albums as the frontman for Hootie & the Blowfish, Rucker is now concentrating on his own roots of rock. His country roots, anyway. His new single, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” is already climbing the country charts. So when he’s not busy plugging his own country debut, he’s talking up this Roots of Rock sweepstakes. “It’s such a cool idea,” he told me. “I just wish I could win it.”

So if Rucker’s this excited about the sweepstakes, it must be worth entering. You don’t even need to have a MasterCard to do so. It takes about three minutes, and if you win, you and three friends get a real VIP package. Not just some concert tickets and a free parking pass. This grand prize includes airfare, accommodations, really good concert seats and the meet-and-greet. If you win the Chesney prize, you then a tour of the place where he played Little League, went to high school and where he played his first gigs for $5 an hour and all the enchiladas he could eat. Now those are some true Tennessee roots.

I really hope that Darius makes it in country. He has such an amazing voice. I have been a fan since Hootie and The Blowfish - I went to see them and he sounds the same live. He always comes out with amazing songs that everyone can relate to, so come on Darius, kick some country butt!
