Outsiders Inn: A Lot of Laughs
Bobby Brown is a cast member on CMT's Outsiders Inn, airing Fridays at 8:30/7:30c.
Me, Carnie Wilson and Maureen McCormick became really close on Gone Country, and we decided we wanted to work together again. CMT was wanting us to be a part of the CMT family and we graciously accepted. Outsiders Inn was an idea that was brought to our attention, and we worked on it and we had a lot of fun.
The premise of the show is simply, Maureen obtains this bed and breakfast, and she asks me and Carnie to come to Tennessee to help her run it. I end up being the entertainment director and Carnie's the cook, and we just have a bunch of laughs.
Every day they would tell us that there were guests coming in and basically we had to be ourselves and help the people. There was no script. The dialogue was whatever we came up with in the situations that we were in.
There's a bunch of funny people that come in and a lot of funny things that go on in the house between me, Maureen and Carnie. There's not really much I want to give away, but bear hunting, bowling with look-alikes ... you have to see it.
Some people on the show are Todd and Mike, who are my buddies. And we had a married couple that was weird, they wanted pickled pig's feet and bull testicles and whipped cream. There's also an old couple that just loves to have sex.
Maureen did a great job and it's a lot of fun working with her. She loves everything and everybody, so that's always pleasant. She's always got a smile on her face, even when she's not feeling well, she's smiling. She's a treat to work around.
Carnie was the chef and she cooked every day, she baked every morning. And she just stayed in the kitchen. It was hard to get her out of the kitchen. If she was awake, she was in the kitchen. She doesn't eat her own food, unfortunately, because it's too many calories and she's been on a diet. Of course I ate most of the food and I gained a lot of the weight. She lost it and I gained it!
The locals were really cool. Todd and Mike, they were my buddies. They took me around to a lot of different places, we played a lot of good music, we had a lot of fun. I took my good friend Leroy, who actually lived in a trailer on the property, I took him to one of my shows in Detroit. And he got shopped up ... he got some shoes, and all kinds of nice things, and he had a good time.
I also went bear hunting. I don't want to do it again. Just being in the woods with a shotgun and looking for a bear does not sound like something that I would do, ever. And I'm surprised that I got through that one. I would not want to try it again, but I had a lot of fun, though. But my bear-hunting days are over.
There were lots of other things that I've never done before. I've never run a bed and breakfast in Cocke County in the Smoky Mountains. I've never been to the Smoky Mountains, so just hanging out there was kinda weird for me, but I had a good time and it was a hell of an experience and I hope I get the chance to do it again.
The hardest part was probably just the mornings, getting up early in the mornings. Seven in the morning, you gotta get up. I'm not a real early riser. Normally I get up around 12. I like staying up and watching TV, or playing or reading.
I mostly enjoyed just being around my friends, being around Carnie and Maureen, and working with the CMT family again was a lot of fun. The show is hilarious. There's a lot of funny moments in the show, and I'm really looking forward to people enjoying it. I really wouldn't have been a part of it if it wasn't going to be funny. I love comedy and I think people will really enjoy the show.
To the fans, I thank you for all your support, and I appreciate you, and enjoy the show!

Bobby, My Dad had the same night “bathroom breaks” as you have. Some of the things and places have been hilarious. He was a very modest man too.

WOW, Bobby Brown has turned his life around, and I’m very glad to see it happening. He was so much in the news, there’s no point in rehashing the bad stuff, the point is, he’s gotten up and gone on to become a better person. Isn’t that what we all strive to be, inside ourselves??? You betcha, I certainly do. Congratulations, Bobby, on becoming a really great human being and funny, too!! I’m proud of you for it and isn’t it better to be in the “country” than in the city where trouble abounds at every corner??? You tell me, dude, I wouldn’t know, I live in a beautiful desert and love that it’s a slow paced lifestyle. Best wishes, always, Rebecca
Clogging Mama says:
Bobby-
Someone who was in the audience said you had cloggers on the show. They weren’t mentioned in your blog. Did you get introduced to clogging?

pear lindsey says:
thanks for not making us cocke county folks look stupied.
Steven Jone says:
uh,Pearl Lindsey that is exactly what they did.Shame on you for making a show that so falsely represents Cocke County and it’s citizens. The show was trash and completely made fun of the south with nothing more than stereotype propaganda. How would you feel if someone would just go up to Detroit,Michigan and poke fun of all the stereotypes of that city i.e.(that is all a bunch of car factories and everyone is unemployed and homeless)I’m sure you would be greatly offended, but then you would understand how i feel what is being done to my hometown.
matt says:
I live in G-ville and been to Newport many times and this isn’t Cocke county this a false stereotype representation of the south and i find it very offensive and do not appreciate this kind of trash one bit.I would have more respect for CMT if they cancel shows like this and redneck wedding, trailor makeover and all those other shows of just bad stereotypes that represent the south in such a bad light.Another thing CMT it’s real classy network to offend a county in the state where most of it’s music comes from.Good job you should feel real proud go back to just showing music videos instead of all this garbage tv.
Manny Fontno says:
Bobby- I can not tell you how happy I am to see you on TV again! You don’t need to be the “next Usher” or Chris Brown, you’ve been there done that! Hell you Blew it up! The good lord wants you right were you are, your evolving and your diehard fans like myself, are glowing with pride for you. I wish you continued success!

Kurt “Piglet” Bradley says:
Hi Bobby,
I heard you all wrecked that great Jeep Wagoneer. Glad you weren’t hurt. That baby was in our family for ten years and took us on many a good camping trip. I was hoping for a still with it and the cast from the first shopping trip to town, with all the cast member’s autographs!
Thanks for having fun with Newport - anybody with any sense knows it was only a good joshin’. Heck if you wanted to make them look bad, you could have just walked through town with a camera rolling.
Anyhow, good luck to you. Thans for taking the Jeep out in glory!

So, I watched the first two episodes last night. I can’t stop thinking about it - SO FUNNY. I never write to a show and just had to. I thought that I was going to be the only dumb-ass writing, but I’m glad that others are enjoying it as much as me. This can’t be a one season show. You three are too funny!
Mike With An Invitation says:
Welcome to Tennessee! I live about 20 Minutes from Cocke County in a little town called Seymour, located in Sevier County. In fact we will be at Cocke County High School this Friday night 08-29-08 where Seymour will play Cocke County in football. If you all are still in the area please come and watch a great game.
The show is great and we can laugh even at ourselves. I can also say that I do not find the show offensive!
k says:
So fun to watch this show. I find it very compelling. I really have seen a side of you, Bobby that I did not know existed. I like it, you are very humble and down to earth and great at improv. I hope this show goes another season if it as good as this one, thus far. I don’t care what the other blogs say, I like, like, like it. You all have great chemistry. Who would have “thunk” that three different people, from different back grounds, life experiences in the entertainment industry would bond so well. Whoever, though this one up ~ great job! It is a hoot to watch.
MzJanice says:
Bobby Brown…You are Awesome!!! Never thought that you weren’t!!! Love the show….I can’t wait to see the next episode….

I live in Newport, and I enjoyed the excitement the cast and crew brought to this town the month of June. However, just to clarify… it is mostly scripted and several of the regural actors are not from Cocke County. I believe most of the Talent Show contestants were from neighboring counties. (Sevierville) The cast and crew were all very nice while in town. Bobby, we really enjoyed the Ruby’s nights!!!!!!
Nancy says:
Bobby, I’m glad we haven’t seen the last of you. You have such a crazy but loving personality and I’m happy you are able to display the best of that to the world who always seems to be judging you. Keep doing your thing!

lori l says:
The show is so funny. The three of you together have a chemistry that is crazy funny! Everyone that is griping about misrepresentation needs to chill. I am not from Cocke County or even Tennessee, but a small town in Oklahoma. Every town has those odd people just like every family has a crazy uncle Harry. No one is thinking ill of your community, instead, an interesting, friendly, beautiful place. Love, Love, Love the show….
Suzanne says:
What I’ve known up to now about Bobby was what was reported (mostly negative) by the media. It has been a real pleasure getting to know the real Bobby Brown, a genuine, sincere, talented man who deserves our respect and admiration.
Miz Liz says:
Bobby, you, Maureen and Carnie are fantastic. We can’t wait for the next episode to air. I haven’t laughed this hard in years. I grew up in the country and this is not making fun of people from Cocke County. I live in the country in upstate New York and crazy, bizarre situations happened all the time. WE love it and you and we hope that this won’t stop at the end of September. Please keep this going. We LOVE it!! We are so blessed to see another side of you, not just want the media has portrayed.
Also: What a shame no one sang James’ Brown’s song : GET UP OFFA THAT THING, when Carnie had her problems “down south”. teehee.

I think the show is GREAT!!! You guys are so funny together and I love it! I am from the south and I think the show is very funny and do not find it offensive!
Bobby you should have won Gone Country, JR made a mistake.
I hope the show continues. You have fans in NC.
FLO says:
You are right bear hunting is not for the novice. I can imagine you did feel out of place in a country setting but remember that steak you enjoy comes from cattle ranchers risking their lives to feed the world. Head to the midwest try Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota see what wipe open spaces really look like. The show is great you did well putting the right words in the right places to give everyone a smile.

We have a pig roast every year on our farm in ByBee Tn. Bybee is a little suburb of sorts in Cocke County. We would like to invite you all to a good old fashion party.
Beautiful views, great food, and even better company is what you will find at our annual pig roast. It will be
Oct. llth 2008. If you are interested please email me for more details. We would love to have you.
Jenny says:
Hey Bobby,
Just wanted to tell you that maybe you should ask your friends to put you in a tree stand next time you are bear hunting. It’s more comforting to be off the ground even if they can climb. That’s how we do it in Wisconsin. I went my first time 4 days after I had my daughter, Sierra. Her doctor told me that was the strangest request he’s ever had…”I have to have her by Sept 10th because I got my bear tag” It’s really not a strange request because it’s not that easy to get a tag. I’m going on 8 years and still no tag. I hope you got to at least get to eat some bear…it’s good! Anyways, the kids and I like the show and enjoyed you guys on Gone Country as well. Keep it up!
CarolinaCat says:
What a great show! I look forward to it every Friday. The cast is fabulous! Living in an “itty bitty” town in North Carolina, I do find disturbing that some of the “locals” in Cocke County find the show offensive. Get over yourselves ya’all! Southern hospitality? NOT.
kathy says:
I laugh to hard at this show. I would love to hang out for a week with all of them. I haven’t laugh that much in along time. THANK YOU, KATHY C

I really enjoy the show, and can’t wait to see the next episodes. I laugh so hard.

Karen says:
Bobby, you were great on the show! Please, if Carnie and Maureen do another season, you have got to participate……your chemistry with the other guys was great……………thanks for your time you put into it.
Anita says:
Let me just say this about this show: LOVE IT!
I am a single mom of 6 and usually I do not have time for television, but this show, I cannot wait until its on again. I just read that you are only going to have 8 shows. WHAT????????????? Hopefully you will bring us more. And as far as some of the negative comments I read (which I had to quit reading cuz no wonder those bitter people have a bad rep, look at their attitudes) don’t even worry about them. It only really seems to be from the people around there and I really do not know what they are complaining about because if it wasn’t for your show, I would have never known about their area and I like to say it looks beautiful and I might one day like to visit. Those people need to happy you gave them some fame, I for one do not look bad on that community or the citizens so they shouldn’t be so hard on this matter.
SO PLEASE, MAKE MORE SHOWS! With all the stresses I have in my life, you all make me smile and laugh and I appreciate that!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME! Very respectfully, Anita
Nicole says:
I’ve only seen one show so far, but it was pretty funny. Of course you have to consider Bobby in there he is a very funny guy anyway. I love how the characters were mixed up a bit. Like instead of three chicks hanging out they had a guy come in to the scene. I think this will be a good run for you all! Hope to see more shows:)
Yolanda M says:
LOVE LOVE LOVE you and the chemistry with Maureen and Carnie. You guys crack me up! The show is so entertaining. First time in a long time I look forward to watching TV. I’m grateful to CMT for providing such laughs. BOBBY YOU’RE A BLESSING.

Karen says:
Love the lesson you go on how to say “bear”………..especailly how Todd says a bear is something you cuddle in bed when you’re a child………you guys are wonderful!
Karen Kinnicutt says:
I loves me some Bobby! I wonder if that huge mirrored disco ball that they show Bobby Holding, is really installed at the Outsiders Inn. I wonder if they use it. I wonder if Bobby really is “Kicken the jams”? I like Strawberry Jam in the morning. Do you think Bobby would ever invite me (a total stranger) to the Outsiders Inn and we could dance under the Disco Ball. I have a small Disco ball hanging from my rear view mirror in my car. Its really cool. Every time I look at it I think of Bobby Brown and him.
Mike From Seymour, TN says:
Bobby,
You missed a great football game that I invited you all too in an earlier post. Seymour beat Cocke County 25-0!!!! Go EAGLES!!!!!

Hi, I just wanted to leave a short to let you know I really enjoy Outsiders Inn, it’s fun, light and very entertaining. Great break from all the bad news and politics. It’s great, I hope to be treated to a second season (at least).
The three of you make a perfect combination.

Bob,
I remember a Spin Magazine article from ‘88. It was written around the time you were on tour w/ Al B. and NE.
I can’t remember who headlined but they had you opened and they only gave u 30 minutes. Your attitude was that you would give the best thirty minutes and you blew them all of the stage and became the HEADLINER and gained momentum with the biggest record of ‘88!
You’ve been the underdog throughout your career but always came through–this is your time, Bobby, Bad times come hour after hour. “We’ll give it our attention but never give it power!”—-It’s your time, Baby…Get it!
Ramona says:
This is the funniest show on tv, please bring it back next summer, at least a Christmas special! You represented well!!! Bobby you are the best.

Bobby,
Great show! I tune in every week. I am so glad people get to see the real Bobby Brown, not just the one portrayed by the media. One day I’ll have to send you a pic of my brother, who is your long-lost identical twin, maybe you can give him some advice on how to turn his life around like you did. I’ve been a fan since your New Edition days, and I have all your solo albums. You were also my favorite on Gone Country, not just because you look like my brother, but because you are truly talented! Luv ya always!
Judith Wyman says:
I loved the show and my son and I had so many laughs watching. We had seen Gone Country and think these 3 made a great team. I think the show was a refreshing change from the stuff that is out there. I would love to see a sequel. Good job!!!!!!!!

Bobby, Thank you for the opportunity for me to get to see you on TV. In the past when I saw photos of you or on TV you seemed sad or unhappy. On this show you looked as if you were really enjoying yourself and the people around you. I do hope there is more of you, Maureen, and Carnie-if not Outsiders Inn, something together on CMT! You all are hilarious! And those who had unpleasant things to say to you, pay them no mind, they are wrong!
