New Music Videos: Strait Ahead and Carrie On

Posted: August 8th, 2008 at 6:32 pm  |  By: Chet Flippo

Three fresh new music videos awaited the CMT music video evaluation team as they scampered into the big viewing suite high atop downtown Nashville this week. New George Strait! New Carrie Underwood! And, after an absence, new John Michael Montgomery. Let the videos roll on.

Artist: Carrie Underwood:
Video: "Just A Dream"
Director: Roman White

Carrie Underwood's latest is a short dramatic epic, high on arresting visuals and obvious emotions. A sad, sad story: the female narrator marries her true love just after she turns 18. He's soon off to war in his shiny new uniform, never to return. The wedding and the funeral service are depicted with grace and sensitivity.

Comments: After a stunned silence: "Hot shot!" "Wow!" "Great!" "Was that the Korean War or Vietnam?" "Looking at the cars, I would guess ‘50s or ‘60s." "It begins with Eddy Arnold's ‘Make The World Go Away' on the car radio. That was ‘60s [1965], so Vietnam." "Very effective use of black and white."

Artist: George Strait
Video: "Troubadour"
Director: Trey Fanjoy

He's back in the saddle again! That's obviously where George Strait looks and feels most at home. And here he is, riding smartly across his pasture and posting handsomely by a fence post to sing. And as he does so, archived video clips and still photos reprise highlights from his many years as a troubadour.

Panelists' comments: One person was whistling the song. "It's great seeing George on a horse again, because that's what he does." "This is such a great day to love country music!" "On man, that was good!" "The use of photos gives it a real 3-D feel."

Artist: John Michael Montgomery
Video: "If You Ever Went Away"
Director: Jason Epperson

A very fit-looking John Michael Montgomery returns from hiatus with a strong new video. He's in a bar, where he ponders what might be and what might have been with his lady love.

Comments: "He can still sing!" "It's been a long time. He still has a good voice." "This is on his own label, right?" "Mmmm mmm mmm, all right!" "Is this one of the Jamey Johnson songs on John Michael's new album?" "No. I think this is a Randy Houser co-write."

Consensus: Strait and Underwood will both go straight to hot shot rotation, where their fans are waiting. JMM will go on hold for the time being. A video-in-waiting, Lee Ann Womack's "Last Call," comes from hold to enter the playlist in heavy rotation.

    Chet,

Very nice review of yet another wonderful Carrie Underwood video. I’d like to give a big shout out to the man who makes Carrie’s videos come to life, director Roman White.

Wow— Carrie’s video brought me to tears! Love it so much! She is quite the talented actress, too. God Bless all the troops serving overseas right now. And God Bless carrie for this wonderful song.

the carrie underwood video is beautiful, as is the song. She continues to use her incredible voice to win her fans with a beautiful face for an extra addition, making her a beautiful classy woman w/a sexy side of country music. Also, may i add the sheer genius in releasing this video just as everyone has gotten sick of looking @that skank jessica simpson & her whiny voice, “look at me in shorts”, stupid song & video!!!!! Carrie again doesnt have to do much to knock jess down, She really doesnt even have to try, she’s just naturally better!!

Congrats to Carrie for another great song performance. This was the one from her CD that I was waiting for. The first time I heard it, it was like “whoa…play that one again and listen deeply”. It just touches your emotions so much.

I can’t wait for John Michael Montgomery’s new video! I was hoping it would be here for at least a sneak preview. I love the single. He indeed still has his voice. WAY TO GO JMM!!

She is so beyond talented. So proud of her and what she has brought to Country Music. Never ever paid much attention to Country Music before Carrie, and now my CD collection the past 3yrs is only Country!!!

Best Actress Award for Carrie Underwood! Gorgeous cinematography! Brilliant music video! From the facial expressions of Carrie, she was able to convey excellently the confusing and life changing aspects of dealing with the tragic loss of her husband - from the happiness during the wedding day which flashed back into her mind at the funeral TO THE emotional pain and suffering of the young widow at the funeral. From the facial expressions of Carrie, I can feel the confusing and sometimes it is impossible to explain the reason why her husband has to die and asked, “Baby, why’d you leave me, why’d you have to go…I was counting on forever, now I’ll never know.” While she was walking down the aisle ( when the white dress and wedding veil turns to black dress and black veil indicating that she is now awakened that she is in the funeral of her husband ), from her facial expressions, I can feel her denial and disbelief that this is happening to her. She accurately portray the intensity of the emotional pain and suffering and her desperation of losing her husband. Her acting when she received a letter confirming the death of her husband and in the three scenes of the conversations of the military husband and Carrie in the car, the night before the husband is going to be deployed to war is superb and made the music video more powerful!!!

This incredible acting skill of Carrie Underwood and the technically skilled tremendous vocals only show that the best is yet to come for her. The music video started with the conversations of the military husband and Carrie in the car, the night before the husband is going to be deployed to war. Then Roman White used the “FLASHFORWARD” cinematic device for the funeral of her military husband who died in that war. At the funeral, her memories of the church were of her wedding day that flashed back into her mind and then she is awakened to the reality that she is in the funeral of her husband when the white dress and wedding veil turns to black dress and black veil. The most powerful scene is Conversation 3. Husband, “I have our whole life plan for us. It’s perfect.” Carrie, “Promise?” Then they showed Carrie crying at the funeral and then she in front of the coffin of her husband and she held on to that American Flag given to her, THAT IS WHAT IS LEFT OF HIM. Man…My heart goes to our men and women in uniform and their families fighting for our freedom!!!

I only wished Roman made the husband a Policeman or FireFighter or Border Patrol to get the War aspect out of this during this particular time in history. Having said that I wish Roman had gone to Ft.Campbell and traded a performance by Carrie. For the use of their Chapel and Cemetary and Troops for a firing Squad and Color Guard and also pew fillers. She could have Dined with the troops there.I’m sure the”RAKKASANS”(Yea!3rd Brigade) would have welcomed her warmly R&R back in the USA before their next deployment.
Carrie did a Wonderful Vocal Performance of this Sad Power Ballad, and her acting in her emotional porformance of the song was Terrific even her spoken words in the Video had great inflection

I loved this video! This is my favorite one of hers. This girl is so talented. I would love to see a movie from this video that would be awesome. Toby Keith did it with “Beer for my horses” I think Carrie should consider it!! Way to go Carrie you are the very best!!

This is such an incredible video..I only wish the acting was more literal with the words although Carrie did a wonderful job..This song hit me and was my favorite from the first time I heard her new cd..It will be and should be a #1 hit..Gotta get jessica simpson out of there..All she is showing is her short shorts and almost pornographic posing on the vehicle..Lets get rid of the sex aspect and get back to the talent aspect..Miss Underwood is just the talent to accomplish that along with Rebas new video..congratulations

I love Carrie Underwood. That being said I enjoy all the different artists trying to make it in country. I can remember when Shania first appeared in a country video showing her navel, OMG, LOL. Lets give everybody a chance. Lighten up on those nasty remarks. Only time will tell who will make it,or who will not.

I repeat and I know when someone can sing..I am sorry if you disapprove but I listened (and watched) Jessica’s video again ..she does not sing..she screams..and if she is going to “try” to make it in country….she needs to sing and not rely on skin..sorry but I have a right to my opinion..and I am tired of “artists” trying to make it on their looks instead of their talent..Not a nasty remard just a true obervation..take it or leave it..I am sure it isn’t hurting Jessicas feelings…

Great video - You can still see that Carrie is that sweet girl on American Idol who has grown in to a beautiful young woman. I hope she always stays as grounded as she is. She is so………talented.

  • diane says:

    Posted: August 13th, 2008 at 12:20 am

the fact that Carrie is a vegan and animal rights activist has nothing to do with the voice that comes out of that girl…simply amazing

You bet Diane Carrie Underwood is the best country lady I have seen or heard .Her songs are easy to understand and Carrie don’t need to get pornagraphic like La Jessica Simpsom. She is such a sweet girl.I will buy Carrie s songs as for the pig of Jessica Simpson I wouldn’t get one even if it was free she has no class and the song might be good but it needs someone else to sing it not a retared like jessica. You go Carrie your #1 in my housewhole..And girl pay no attention to the insecure retard……ur#1fan Marie
