Is There a Country Song With Your Name in It?
Whenever I do a phone interview with a country singer, lead or otherwise, the conversation always starts the same way. I answer my cell phone at the appointed time, and I'm greeted in song. Like this:
Me: Hello.
Artist: Aaaal-iii-so-oooon, I know this world is killing you. Ohh ohh, Aaaal-iii-so-oooon, my aim is truuue.
Me: Oh, hi, (artist name). God, I haven't heard that one in ages. You should seriously cover that in concert. That was so, so good.
Artist: Aaaal-iii-so-oooon, my aim is truuue.
Then we move on from one of Elvis Costello's most famous songs, "Alison," to talk about whatever it is we're supposed to talk about. And even though I've heard it a hundred times, it still gives me chills to hear my name sung with a little Southern drawl. (Plus, it's way better than when I was a little girl and everyone who met me was compelled to sing the entire chorus and even a couple verses of Gordon Lightfoot's "Poor Little Alison.")
And while I wish there was a more mainstream country song with my name in the title, I'm happy to have a couple under my belt. If you're named Delilah, Chuckie or Jude, you know what I mean. It probably happens to you all the time. And if your name's Jenny, how many people ask you if your number is 867-5309? But does this happen to any other folks out there? I'd love to know what country songs have first names in them, besides Jolene, Elvira and Lucille?

A. Fan says:
Change your name to Genevieve. There’s a sweet tune on the Sugarland CD called Genevieve and I have no clue what its about but that Nettles makes every thing and every name sound very nice.

How about “When Rita Leaves” courtesy of country bluesman Delbert McClinton or “Rita Ballou” from the pen of songmeister Guy Clark and the sweet lips of Vince Gill?!?!?! … :D :D :D
Very deep topic, BTW … LOL
Linda says:
Conway Twitty had a song called “Linda on My Mind.”
amie says:
Pure Praire League’s Amie has been sung to me so many times. Of course there have been different versions of it sung to me. I will admit it is not a favorite song of mine.
Darren says:
How about Carolyn by Merle Haggard and Amanda by Don Williams and Waylon Jennings
sunnyldm says:
How about “I’m Not Lisa” by Jessi Coulter? BTW, my name IS Leisa (sounds the same just spelled differently)! lol
Lisa says:

You never fail to make me laugh…I love your blogs! I can’t think of any other country songs with names in them right now; just wanted to let you know your blogs are read and appreciated! :)
Jen says:
My name is Jenny or, as my uncle Jimmy calls me, 867-5309. Every time he calls me, that is how he addresses me. I love him to death, but when ever I hear that song I want to scream! I wish he would find a different song with my name in it.
sunnyldm says:
Lisa: too funny! I take it your parents were country music fans? lol I guess it’s a good thing you weren’t a boy…they might have named you Sue! ;-)
I know they’re not country, but does anyone remember the pop group Lisa Lisa & the Cult Jam from back in the 80’s? I had a coworker many years ago who would say that everytime she saw me….loved the group back in the day, but grew to hate it ’cause of that! Ahhh, the memories…..
Jessica says:
My dad decided to name me Jessica after Jesse from Rick Springfields song “Jesse’s Girl” and they came up with Louise from my memaw, but didn’t realize Billy Ray Cyrus would come out with “Achy Breaky Heart” and I would annoy them with it because it had my name in it. lol.

Vince Gill’s Pretty Little Adrianna,
Emily Suzanne says:
My daddy decided to name me “Emily Suzanne” after a Mac Davis song. It was written from a daddy to his little girl. My dad plays the guitar and is a wonderful singer and would sing it to me all the time when I was little girl. Even now at 32 years old, once in a while my dad will start singing it to me or I’ll ask him to sing it to me. “Emily Suzanne, sweet tiny bundle of joy…”
Billie says:
Even though my middle name is not Jean, the song I heard most as a kid was Micheal Jackson’s Billie Jean. Hated it, hated it, hated it. Hated my parents for the name Billie because I always got “thats a boys name”, but over the years you learn to laugh that stuff off, now I don’t mind my name. However, I did make sure my daughters name would’nt be mistaken for a “boys name”.
Joe says:
“Hey Joe” by Jimi Hendrix.
Here’s the thing: I only listen to country music so when folks first started coming up to me singing/reciting these words…
“Hey Joe, where you goin’ with that gun in your hand?”
… I was like, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” It started in high school — I’ll turn 32 later this month — and I’ve yet to hear the song for myself, but at least I understand what the reference is now. My response is always uncontrollable and always the same: I take a deep breath, offer a half-smile and quickly say, “Yeah, I’ve heard that before.”
MiaT says:
I got stuck with “Mama Mia” during the Queen song.
