Can You Duet: Joey + Rory Sign With Vanguard/Sugar Hill
Can You Duet was a big event for CMT. Many viewers took a real liking to the contestants -- even the ones who didn't win. Comments are still rolling in about the way it ended, the judging during the show and, most importantly, what's happening with the rest of the cast. Joey + Rory, a husband and wife duo and my personal favorites, had a huge following right up until the end, and some predicted that they would still end up with a record deal even though Caitlyn & Will took home the grand prize. Well, it looks like those people were right because Vanguard/Sugar Hill Records has announced that Joey + Rory have signed a recording contract and plan to release their debut album in the fall of 2008. Better still, "Cheater, Cheater," a song they performed on the show, will be the first single and a video should be out soon.

The newly reconfigured Bomshel is set to release a new single to radio also titled “Cheater, Cheater” in mid October. I wonder if its the same song? Hmmmm……

Curb recording artists Bomshel are set to release “Cheater Cheater” as a single on October 15th!! Very interesting indeed that this new duet couple would be releasing the same song around the same time. Now legally, I have of much that goes on in the industry, but I DO know that Bomshel has been performing this song since early January at their concerts, and also at radio station interviews, and is still rightfully continuing to do so! Now I don’t understand why Joey & Rory would sing this song on national tv without mentioning Bomshel or Kristy O (from Bomshel and also co-writer for the song) and now go and release it as their single. Doesn’t seem right to me. Don’t get me wrong I think J&R are very talented and I wish them tremendous success, but Bomshel is the original artist for this song, so shouldn’t the fact that they are releasing it, respectfully mean that J&R don’t. J&R performed that song on a night which the duos performed songs that they had written. Did they in fact not write the song? Or did they write it and sell the rights to Bomshell?

Kristy O. from Bomshel co-wrote it with Rory, so it was fine that they chose to sing it on that particular ‘writers’ night…however, now the fact stands that they are trying to push it as their single, when it had already been agreed and announced (back in May)that it would in fact be Bomshel’s single this fall. It just seems to me, and this is solely my opinion, that J&R had their chance to ‘claim’ the song as a single, but didn’t want it…and now with the success of the show, and the fan hype about “Cheater Cheater”, and also Bomshel’s tremendous success/ reaction with it…that J&R NOW want to release it as THEIR single, around the exact same time as Bomshel had planned.

I absolutely love them because although the other duets were awesome they really are not ‘country’. Joey and Rory certainly are.

and bought it. Was hard to find them. Finally came across them when I typed in the song title. They are listed under Joey+Rory (no space between).

Beth, you’ve got a one sided story right there…it’s the music business, which runs on one sided stories. The song is rightfully whoever would like to present it to the world. If someone wants to hear Bomshel sing it, then great, and if they want to hear Joey + Rory sing it, then great. Who are we to say only one person can release a song. It’s happened before, and it will happen again and again. You think only one person is allowed to sing ‘You are my sunshine’? no. Good luck to both bands. Music is too wonderful to be thought of as a contest.

Annie B. - Joey and Rory performed at Dornan’s in Moose, WY (Jackson Hole) this past Saturday night (sorry, didn’t see your comment before today). However, they are also very involved in the PAWS Benefit Concert this coming Friday the 29th at Dornan’s, along with several other great songwriters. If you’re in the area and love dogs, you should try to catch this show.
