These Fans Will Always Love Dolly Parton … Maybe Too Much
Who doesn't love Dolly Parton? I do. In fact, I think the world is a better place because she's in it. But, I have come to realize that my devotion simply can't hold a candle to the acolytes featured in the indie documentary, For the Love of Dolly.
The film follows the lives of a handful of extreme Dolly Parton fans. One young man surprised his family by overcoming the struggles of a serious illness by taking up Dolly as a hobby. (He makes gifts to give her during her annual Dollywood parade.) One middle-aged couple's Dolly collection threatens to take over their home. And finally, two young ladies... well, their obsession is more than a little disturbing. For example, one girl takes a splinter of wood from the replica cabin at Dollywood, matches the color at Home Depot and remodels the back of her house to look exactly like the cabin. Yikes.
I bet I've seen this movie about 10 times by now, so maybe I shouldn't be talking about obsession. I first watched it at the Nashville Film Festival a few years ago and was lucky enough to meet the director, Tai Uhlmann. She gave me a screener copy, so I've invited almost everybody I know to watch it. Now I'm pleased to announce that it's widely available on DVD. I'm hoping to go to Dollywood in a few weeks to see Dolly perform there, and you better believe I'm going to keep my eye out for these overly zealous fans.

I have seen this doc. These folks are the true freaks of freaks and need to get a real life!
whoopietoda says:
OMG! Dolly is fabulous. But these folks are the utmost of the Trailer-trolls!
Dplover says:
The footage in this film is priceless. These fans are embarrassing!

Being a fan of Dolly for nearly all her career, I agree with the above statement… That these folks are embarrassing representation of Dolly Fan’s! We all arent white trash, with bad teeth living in trailers!

Kayefun says, My devotion can’t hold a candle to these devoted fan folks either. I’m incensed that anyone would call them ‘freaks’,'embarrassing’, ‘white trash, with bad teeth living in trailers’.
These folks have real lives and have the right to be just the Dolly fans they are. If Dolly’s music, personality, and life has touched them so dramatically, who’s to judge it wrong? I certainly think Dolly has a heart huge enough to love all her fans including these especially devoted ones.

If licking a seatbelt that doesn’t have the power to cure disease or telling my boss that he/she must deal with the fact that my work schedule cannot interfere with seeing a celebrity is having a life… I don’t want one. Dolly seems to be a very nice person. Most celebs wouldn’t let those types of fans get anywhere near them. May God continue to bless her and may He help those fans because I dread to think what they might do to themselves if something stopped Dolly from performing or appearing in public.
Aunt Granny says:
So…. to those of you who have written demeaning comments…. If you actually watch the film, and use your brains to think a little you may find that these people are really not freaks. In fact these people make up a large population of fans…Look at how many people spend so much money on auctions for celebrity items and meet and greets and things of that nature. Do you really think two guys who fill their house with tons of Dolly items are strange… heck how do you think eBay is in business! The young lady who built herself a back house replica of Dolly’s Tennessee Mt Home, well if you are going to make a replica why wouldn’t you do it right and make it the same color? I guess if she painted it pink that would be the same?? Dolly sure seems to know her too, at least enough to ask her if she brought her puppies to the parade she was at… Come on don’t you think you people are being a little judgmental? And for the person who said they are trash, living in trailers did you even see the film you fool? They two guys have a pool in their back yard and the one girl has 2 houses on her property! You call that trailer trash- I think you have a strange idea of trash- they seem pretty well off to me. And last let me say, if you people are all Dolly fans, and I mean real fans then you probably know these fans in the Doc. personally, as they are always everywhere, if you dont, you really aren’t fans cause you aint been to nothing! Really it just boils down to jealousy. How many people were interviewed for this film and got left out? But, if you all feel better trashing them, go on…, however you may want to look at your own lives. By the way, Dolly doesn’t seem to have any issues, why do you?

That may be, it must be her management then….
BECAUSE
Dolly is still one of the greatest hotties of the world. At age 62 she still looks better than a lot of those so-called supermodels. I’d say it’s way overdue that she showed those 34E’s aka “The Best Boobs in the Bizz” to the world, so c’mon Dolly pose nude in the near future and don’t wait until y’er 100th birthday or at least have the pictures that have been taken in the past published!
DPinTexas says:
I just hope the general public doesn’t think that all Dolly fans are this “fanatic” because we’re not. I have met David and he is a very sweet man and I understand his joy in loving Dolly! The others are too overly obsessed for me. Granted some of them have incredible Dolly collections but when is enough, enough? And investing the time and energy of finding Judy’s traded-in automobile and about wetting her pants over the seatbelt where Dolly has ridden in is ridiculous! She needs a life. I just hope they’ve enjoyed their 15 minutes of fame.
mark in alabama says:
Well i have read every comment so far on the documentry.
First i am a Dolly fan.I met Dolly back in 2004 @ her dvd signing in huntsville, alabama and waited in line for 9 hrs(I was # 4 in line, David was first)thats how bad i wanted to meet her after being a fan of 18 years. It was a dream come true.so i do understand the devotion.
i have also met David from alabama and he has a heart of gold and I think if Loving Dolly has givin him the will to go future then so what if anyone doesnt like it(by the way he has met Dolly lots of times, and she calls him by name when ever she sees him and always gives him a hug).
As for the others,I havent met them.but I do agree with the licking the seat belt thing that is just too weird.but each their on.
Kelly says:
Im a HUGE Dolly fan, i spend every penny i have and dont have buying front row tickets to every concert she does in the UK and ireland, I may alot of money travling to the USA to see her open dollywood, i may for meet and greets..does that make me a loonie? many may think so, but one thing all us people have in common is we love dolly, i dont think i could love her anymore than i do, but then i watch the doc, and think maybe i could. Each to there own!
Dee says:
Why do people find it necessary to bash everyone? I had some opinions about the doc at first and did question the devotion, but I think alot of this footage is taken out of context and the producers did that on purpose to make these fans seem over the top. Dolly has MANY fans that have followed her for years and have spent countless money on her. To each their own, and if you don’t understand it, then don’t comment.
sarah says:
i love dolly and will always love dolly so anyboby who loves dolly, crazy or not, they are a friend of mine! who knows what i would do if given the chance to meet that extrodinary woman!!!
