Heidi Newfield Learns Some New Tricks

Posted: July 22nd, 2008 at 11:30 am  |  By: Chris Parton

Once the lead singer of Trick Pony, Heidi Newfield is out on her own now and looking ready for the challenge. Her album, What Am I Waiting For, comes out in August and her first single, "Johnny and June," is in rotation on CMT. Those famous names are obviously a reference to Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, as is just about everything else in the lyrics. Nearly every line calls out a song title or famous exploit of the Man in Black, which can get slightly irritating after a while, but I don't think she's trying to cash in on the reference. I think it's more about a girl inspired by the famous couple, wishing for a fairy tale love story. Plus, that black Cadillac in the video is sweeeeeet. I wonder if you could make that into a hybrid?

You know I’d always been a fan of Trick Pony—or more specifically of Heidi Newfield and her voice, personality, etc. And as much as I enjoyed the music that she made with the band (”It’s a Heartache” is one of my all-time favorites) I’m enjoying her even MORE as a solo artist now! “Johnny and June” is a song that I LOVED from the VERY FIRST LISTEN! Can’t wait to buy her album and hear even more TERRIFIC music from her!

    Great job Heidi!

I agree w/ JW. I LOVED this song the first time I heard it. I’m rather new to country music. I had heard of Trick Pony before, but couldn’t tell you one of their songs. “Johnny and June” is a terrific song, and Heidi has an amazing voice!

Johnny & June is an AMAZING song & Heidi sings it so well! She’s one of the best voices country music has! She’s genuine country! I loved the song the first time I heard it (still love it) & think she deserves a #1! Way to go Heidi!

i was instantly in love with this song the first time i heard it. that led me to her website where you can preview other songs and i learned that she is by no means a one hit wonder, shes great! my favorite new act in country music for sure, not too pop-y but still catchy. at first i was skeptical about using johnny and june’s names to gain publicity but after listening to the lyrics more closely i believe that it is an earnest song about a love as deep and special as johnny and junes…i cant stop listening to it!

I liked the video and the song Johnny and June. They were great in a lot of ways from singing to a wonderful marriage and to have a song about them is truly wonderful. The best of luck being on your own Heidi-you’ll do great!!

First time I heard this song, I stopped whatever I was doing and stood still to listen. It captured me. We ALL want to love like Johnny and June. This will be my new favorite song for a long time!

The first time I heard Johnny and June- it was all I could hum in my head all day. I love Heidi’s voice with the song. They go together like hamburgers and french fries. Songs like Johnny and June is what country music needs.
