“You Say I Only Hear What I Want To…”

I’ve been waiting a long, long time to see Lisa Loeb in concert - ever since she had “Stay” out in the summer of 1994. The trickle of guitar chords at the beginning of that song sends me right back to the summer before I moved to Nashville. And whenever “Stay” comes up in the shuffle at home, I am prone to racing around my apartment like she does in the video, singing with conviction at the top of my lungs: “You say I only hear what I want to….” So I was delighted to finally see her perform in Nashville over the weekend. She is just so nifty — “attractive, smart, stylish, enjoyable, etc.,” as my Webster’s dictionary defines it.
Being a country fan, I’m forever loyal to my favorite artists, so I’ve bought pretty much every Lisa Loeb album since Tails. On this trip, she was co-writing with Randy Scruggs, and she’s actually in the middle of a summer tour promoting a new album, Camp Lisa, inspired by her youthful years at summer camp. (Even cooler, some of the proceeds will help kids go to camp if they can’t otherwise afford it.)
During one of her many amusing stories, she told us that she and her boyfriend wandered into a karaoke bar into New York City, where she’s mostly living these days, and the hostess said, “Hey, I’m going to sing that one song by that one girl, because you look just like her!” (Indeed, she’s still immediately recognizable in her rimmed glasses and long black hair.) She also sang a lot of my favorite songs from her catalog - “Waiting for Wednesday,” “I Do,” “Falling in Love,” “Truthfully,” all of which are on The Very Best of Lisa Loeb. Check it out. You don’t necessarily have to run around while you listen.
