Some Labor Music Choices for Nicole Kidman

Posted: July 1st, 2008 at 1:32 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Keith Urban & Nicole KidmanNicole Kidman and I don't have a lot in common. But that's about to change. As soon as she has her baby, we will share the common bond of childbirth -- one that allows complete strangers to share stories of dilating, labor pains and those blessedly sweet epidurals. Since I've been in that labor and delivery room three times, I feel qualified to help her choose the music that will help ease her pain naturally. She told Britain's Daily Mail that she'll be playing stuff from the flautist Sir James Galway (like his instrumental take of John Denver's "Annie's Song"). And of course, her husband Keith Urban's music made the cut as well. Maybe she'll play his "Used to the Pain" until she truly is. But I hope she hasn't stopped there.

Plenty of songs out there would motivate you push through the pain. If I had to go into labor again tomorrow, here's what I'd pack in my suitcase along with my focal point and Jolly Ranchers:

A few songs that are soothing for the initial pains, like Martina McBride's "Anyway" and the Warren Brothers "Where Did I Go Right?" But when the contractions start coming fast, I would want to hear songs about the rollercoaster ride of motherhood, like Gretchen Wilson's "Full Time Job," Kenny Chesney's "There Goes My Life," and Trace Adkins' "You're Gonna Miss This." For a few good laughs, I'd have to throw in Fountains of Wayne's "Stacy's Mom" and Clay Walker's "'Fore She Was Mama."
If I've left out any obvious choices for Nic's delivery, please post them below. Keep in mind, too, that just because she'll have a baby at home doesn't mean everything will change. Ashton Shepherd says so in "I Ain't Dead Yet."

Being a mother of four I’m a pro at the thing called labor. So,something warm and fuzzy to start things off like Keith’s version of “Can’t stop loving you”,but by the time the pain hits home and if no medication “what was I thinking” will cross her mind if only a fleeting thought due to pain. In all honestly what music do you play? There is a million and one thoughts and things happening that anthing from “I hate everything about you” to “Once in a lifetime love could apply. It is the after glow that will best explain it all when they have one look at the precious baby then “amazing” (Janelle) and “I saw God today”, would best apply because when you see your baby arrive into this big old world it is amazing and you will see God in the eyes of your baby……
I can’t wait to hear what musical masterpiece Keith will create from the birth of his child.

I myself would pick Kenny Chesney’s There Goes My Life and Don’t Blink. Also, The Oakridge Boys Thank God For Kids. Last but not least, anything she would like to hear from Keith would be just great. Best of Luck to the both of them.

Why has nobody mentioned “My Little Girl” from Tim McGraw. I think it’s on his Flicka soundtrack. (Or, his song about Johnny’s daddy was taking him fishing, Dont Take The Girl..if it’s a boy!)

i can imagine that she’ll be in a lot of pain so a little comedic relief might do her some good.

rollerskate song–melanie safka (i think that’s who sings it)…i have yet to meet a person who doesn’t at least half smile when they hear that song.

idiot boyfriend–jimmy fallon…for when she starts cursing keith for doing this to her.

trying to stop your leaving–dierks bentley…dierks bentley always makes me happy.

stupid boy–keith urban…again, for when she’s cursing him for doing this to her.

apologize–OneRepublic…it’s too late to apologize, it’s too late.

and of course there are others like mama tried–merle haggard, what was i thinking–dierks bentley, and sexyback–justin timberlake.

I would say that any of Keith’s song would be a comfort to Nicole while in labor. Perhaps an old Crystal Gayle song “You and I” might be nice at first. When labor gets intense ,Craig Morgan’s “Tough” or Gary Allan’s “Right Where I Need To Be” would be good. If expecting a daughter they could play Sugarland’s “Baby Girl” and if it is a boy they could play Alan Jackson’s “Little Man”.(I enjoyed this one when I had my second son). After the baby is born they could play Clay Walker’s “Fall” because they will absolutely fall in love with this little person they have created with their love. Nicole may even want to hear Jamie O’neals “Somebody’s Hero”. Hope all goes well with labor and delivery and congratulations on the birth of the Urban-Kidman baby.

I think it should All American Girl by Carrie Underwood if it’s a girl and Cleanin This Gun (Come On In Boy) if it’s a boy lol. After she has the baby she should play either Boondocks by Little Big Town or Watching Airplanes by Gary Allan. Congrat’s on the baby.

i think one of the songs should be making memories of us by keith himself. after all,she DID say she wanted to hear music from keith,so,i think she’ll ONLY play keith urban songs in my opinion.
