With Country Music, Who Needs Therapy?

Posted: June 13th, 2008 at 11:18 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Kenny ChesneyThat's what Matt Lauer asked Kenny Chesney on this morning's Today Show. Lauer started his interview by reading from Chesney's latest album's liner notes, where he wrote, "I've been through a lot, I've lived a lot, I've tasted a lot, laughed a lot, heard a lot, looked for answers, found more questions, had some moments to remember, and I think all that comes through when I open my mouth and sing." I have to agree with Lauer and Chesney. An album like this can certainly be therapeutic for the singer.

Chesney went on to say, "There's a lot of me in this record, and I feel like the songs are the soundtracks to people's lives. Especially mine. I found some songs that really, really touched me in ways that other songs didn't." Even though Chesney admitted he didn't write any of the songs, he can still be touched by the stories they tell. But I think listeners can be just as touched by country music. I'm no therapist, but if you can get up in time to get to the NBC plaza in New York City by 4 a.m., music must have some kind of pull and some sort of healing power.

Maybe it's the way Chesney sings about being a bit of a drifter in "Better as a Memory." Or the way he plays the part of a wise, old man so convincingly on "Don't Blink." If you're struggling with similar issues, coping with stress or trying to get some perspective on your life, listening to Chesney can seriously help. It may not be the only prescription you need, but it certainly can't hurt. This may be music, but it's still good for the soul.

All I can say is Robert, didn’t your mommy tell you what most of us seem to have figured out somehow on our own? “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. That little tidbit may be your answer to a happier life - perhaps you should hang out with some “rednecks” or attend a NASCAR race and let yourself have a good time rather than slinging insults. To each his own but really, your blood pressure must be through the roof! Please take the advice above and listen to some good Kenny Chesney and put your toes in the sand and take a few deep breaths… Be As You Are…

Great article! Thanks for understanding how much this music, especially Kenny’s, does affect people. When my days get overwhelming, I put on some Kenny music and things just seem to work out. He is providing therapy!

I love the way Kenny can connect with his audience, he blows the audience out of the water every time he steps on stage & plays his music. I agree, “Who needs therapy When You Have Country Music?” Country music to me, helps me relax & calm down. So I guess it is like therapy for me every time I put on some Kenny Chesney or George Strait, or any of the country artists on my ipod or computer.

Robert–thanks for the laugh. Your mama must be so proud of you! Love the grammar and spelling. Whew–wiping the tears from my eyes from laughing so hard. Ahhh Actually, I do feel bad that you’re such a bitter person. Attacking others does not make you stand tall. Best of luck to you.

Kenny was great, of course. He’ll be around for a long, long time.
