New Video Choices From CMT Roundtable

Posted: May 30th, 2008 at 1:32 pm  |  By: Chet Flippo

Billy Ray CyrusNew videos from Billy Ray Cyrus, Cory Morrow, and Gary Allan went under the microscope at the latest CMT Music and Talent department’s weekly video meeting. The videos enjoyed varying degrees of success from the committee members.

The videos:

Artist: Billy Ray Cyrus
Video: “Real Gone”
Director: Trey Fanjoy

Comments: Billy Ray’s newest is a blistering, feel-good remake of the Sheryl Crow song with plenty of drag racing, beautiful babes and lots of action. A summing-up of viewers’ opinions: “I like it,” was an early comment. “It’s the kind of song Billy Ray was born to do,” someone else said. “It’s fast and he looks good.” “But I wondered about his highlights,” another commenter said. “I like cars,” one viewer said, “and you also can’t go wrong with Kenny Greenberg on lead guitar.”

Consensus: It works, especially for the summer. It’s a Heavy. Add it.

Artist: Cory Morrow
Video: “He Carries Me”
Director: Jim Shea

Comments: Texan Cory Morrow has a devoted following, and his latest seems determined to continue that. It’s a rural tableau set in the sort of bleak landscape that many Texas troubadours celebrate. In this case, the song has a quasi-spiritual tinge to it. Opinions began with several variations on “I like the song.” The overall look of the video draws a very mixed response: “I like the mood,” “Too many full head shots of Cory,” “What’s with the dead-pan shots of people just looking at the camera?”

Consensus: We like Cory Morrow and we like the song. We are not sure about the video.

Artist: Gary Allan
Video: “Learning How to Bend”
Director: Stephen Shepherd

Comments: Gary Allan’s latest is a somewhat grim-looking black-and-white tale of a man and a woman and their encounter, seemingly without a resolution. “You know immediately it’s Gary Allan,” said the first panelist. “He’s got that distinctive sound.” Some else wondered aloud whether the video “just sort of washes over you. It does not feel like a Heavy.” “But the song’s got a great groove,” a defender said. “We should definitely add it,” was another remark. “He’s in good voice and it’s a distinct voice.” Someone else observed that the Victoria’s Secret model certainly added something.

Consensus: Mixed. But we like Gary Allan, so let’s try this video in Medium rotation.

Gary Allans always grim, so no big news there. Billy Cyrus is stealing fame from his daughter and now songs from Sheryl Crow. He needs to get some originality.

i am with you Jszoo! Gary Allan isn’t always grim! If you have watched his career, you would know. The man has a heart and he shows it, nothing wrong with having emotion!

Gary allens new video is wonderful. He has a heart and a soul and a lot of videos and songs are missing that. I would like to see it played more or even at all. I have yet to see it on tv only on the website. I don’t think he gets the credit he should.

I MUST BE THE ONLY ONE THAT LOOKS AT BILLY RAY CYRUS AS A NO-TALENT LEACH. If I were Miley Cyrus I would order a DNA test, that is if she can get that leach off of her back long enough.
