Tim McGraw’s Cousin Sounds Like a Star
Catherine Raney is Tim McGraw’s cousin. But in the “it’s who you know” world of Music Row, that bloodline can be less of a blessing and more of a curse. Folks with preconceived notions about how record deals are made could easily deduce that the success the teenage Texan has had so far is because McGraw leaned on friends for favors. But I’ve heard her sing. And it’s safe to say that Raney, 18, could out-sing a lot of the up-and-comers in Nashville. Like Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler, Raney has been singing since she was just a little girl. Yet her voice has taken on a much more seasoned sound — think Martina McBride or Trisha Yearwood — that seems even bigger coming out her tiny frame.
At a recent stop on McGraw’s tour, Raney did her own mini-set packed with both songs by artists who’ve influenced her sound, like Heart, to songs penned just for her by The Warren Brothers (Brett and Brad Warren). She even went on to a private party and sang her own angelic take on McGraw’s “All We Ever Find.” And somewhere between all these tour stops, she’s finding time to put finishing touches on her first studio album with McGraw’s longtime producer Byron Gallimore.
So yes, she has the help of some of Nashville’s golden boys. And yes, she shares McGraw’s signature dimples. But none of that would matter if she didn’t have a pure country voice. The way I see it, every A-list artist has probably ten or more cousins. And they aren’t all guaranteed a success story. It’s the special ones, like Raney, that make the resemblance really matter.

You imply that it would be wrong of people to think she’s had success (if you can call it that) because of Tim. And then go on to name her accomplishments all which I’m sure is attributed to Tim. Opening for Tim McGraw. Singing songs penned by the Warren Brothers(Tim and Faith’s bff’s). And a record produced by Byron Gallimore(Tim and Faith’s longtime friend and producer).
LOTS of pretty voices out there. Lets face it, she wouldn’t have any of those things and you wouldn’t be talking about her if it wasn’t for that connection.

Sure, she’s Tim’s cousin..And Tim helped her, but any artist out there would tell you she would’ve been crazy to refuse help from someone as successful as her cousin. There’s absolutly NOTHING wrong with using her family connection to get her foot in the door.
If she didn’t have the talent to back it up this would be a different story..But she clearly does. I for one am happy for Catherine and wish her luck!!

What difference does it matter? If her voice and her personality wasnt what it is, she wouldnt be where she is. No matter who was there to help her along the way.
When I heard her sing All We ever Find, I knew right then at that moment that not only did she do her cousin proud, but she was going to be somebody with or without his help.

I’ve had the priveledge of hearing Cat sing several times and have never been disappointed. But, for me it wasn’t just the voice, it is the way she treats the people she meets. I took two 13 you girls to a concert and they had the best time meeting her and spending a little time with her. She really made the concert adventure special for them. I’ve been watching Catherine since 2003 and she just keeps getting better. If the talent wasn’t there, it wouldn’t matter what Tim, Faith, Brett, Brad, or Byron may have done for her, if the talents not there, she’ll go nowhere. I have been hearing of Cat’s talent for several years now and finally had the chance to witness her talent first hand a couple weeks ago as well as meet her and she is every bit as talented and sweet as I’ve always heard. This girl is going places with or without the help of her cousin.

Maybe some of you nned to know a little about Catherine, yes she has a famous cousin and has been performing at Tim’s Swampstock since she was 12, but she has done so much more.
Maybe some of you don’t know this but, she has been performing on the Opry circuit in Texas and Louisana for a few years now and has even won Junior Female Vocalist of the Year on the Opry circuit. This is not some American Idol wannabe but a girl that started in the trenches, have any of you ever been to any of them places in Texas where she has performed. She worked at her craft and took it to the people not on some Glitzy TV show but clubs in Texas and Louisana. Tim told her once she graduated from high school he would help her, so what she didn’t sit on her behind and wait for that but instead worked on her craft, took it to the people the people that visit them clubs in Texas and Louisana. Because of that she has grown in her talent and comes to the table not only as a great signer but quite the Entertainer.

They’re a step up from honky tonks in that they’re intended to be family venues. You’ll usually find them in the smaller cities, such as Alvin, Crockett, Stephenville, Magnolia, Italy, Desoto, and Temple. The performances are always on Saturday nights, which is a Texas tradition, and some of them do gospel shows on Fridays. Either way, they’re often springboards for talented performers poised to move on to something bigger. And Catherine has hone her craft at them for a few years now and like I said has won awards.

I happen to know Catherine personally. We met her when she was just getting started on the Texas Opry circuit and she has never been a snob or rude in any way. She is a bit reserved when you first meet her but just because she can be quiet doesn’t mean she’s snobbish. She is an awesome person and extremely talented. I must mirror the words already spoken - no matter what connections a person has, if the talent isn’t there - even tim mcgraw can’t make people like her - either she’s got it or she doesn’t and in the music business - it takes much hard work but to get in the group - it’s who you know and she’s got connections AND God-given talent plus the ability to work for what she wants - I say God bless you Catherine and the wonderful family that encourages and supports you in all you do!!!! Catherine is the real deal people….I don’t care who she is related to. I saw her back in 2003, and through that young girl I said she WILL make it someday. I was so thrilled to see here a couple of days ago. She grew into her OWN voice and has wonderful stage personality.
If it came down to who you know, she could have quit school & went right into the business. But she stayed in school and let her voice mature. GREAT JOB Catherine!!!!

First time we saw Catherine was at the Gladewater opry in Texas. She was a tiny 10 year old with a big voice. No one knew for almost 2 years that she was related or even knew Tim McGraw. She never said a word. We found out when some of the people that go to the show went to the first swampstock she did and she was asked about it at a show.She is very shy(not as much now) and very sweet.We miss her at the opry shows and wish her the best.

I think everyone has accepted help from family or friends whether it be a discount at a local store or a car. I have never had the pleasure of hearing her but I give anyone praise for going for their dreams and I can’t be jealous of her for whom she may be related to or who’s shirt tail she may be on. Growing up with Cathy, I can tell you that she has been singing as long as I can remember, and that she has and is devoting her life to her passion, and that is music. Her voice gives me goosebumps, not only is she a fantastic singer, she is a AMAZING person. End

I’ve known Catherine since she was in 2nd grade, we have fallen out of touch since then, but I have to say she was born to sing. I remember when we were kids we used to sing together, I can’t carry a tune in a bucket, but she is amazing. And she is such a sweet person.
