Keith Urban Looks Good in His Shirt

Posted: May 22nd, 2008 at 11:33 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

There’s a rumor going around that Keith Urban is on the verge of releasing an old song of his. A song from his 2002 album, Golden Road. It’s called “You Look Good in My Shirt,” and is one of the songs that inspires full-on crowd frenzy when he plays it live. (That could have something to do with the fact that he usually goes on a little field trip into the seats and sings it from there … but still.) But it really is a good light-hearted banjo song, about hooking up with an ex-girlfriend.

The Urban legend is that fans called radio request lines so much to play it back when Golden Road was out, and that he was about to release it as a single. By then, though, the Be Here album was ready. And then his hits just kept on coming. So if this new rumor is true, it makes me wonder why now? Why go back there after all these years? Maybe Urban has an intuitive side that’s just telling him to give fans what they want.

Every artist has that one song that stands out during their shows: Miranda Lambert does a mean “Dry Town,” Kenny Chesney pulls out his sultry side for Conway Twitty’s “I’d Just Love to Lay You Down,” Toby Keith has a little Middle Eastern peace tune called “The Taliban Song,” and Tim McGraw pours every ounce of his appreciation for Hank Williams (and David Allan Coe) into his live version of “The Ride.” Songs like those, that turn a dull applause into a cranked-up hoot and holler, might not always be cut out for radio airplay. But Urban’s shirt song, if he goes ahead with the alleged plan, will climb the charts as fast as his other hits have. And who knows? It may move other artists to go back through their old albums and release the singles that never were.

None of his recent singles have hit number one. Since his marriage to hollywood, he has changed and the music is pretty darn bad. That is why he is bringing this one to radio now.

Not true, he’s had plenty of hits off his current album: Once in a Lifetime, I Told You So, Stupid Boy, and Everybody….they didn’t all go to number one, but they are certainly successful…His music just has more meaning now and is on the verge of not being traditionally country. I think Keith’s music has gotten better with time, and his live performance of these songs is truly remarkable. I think his decision to release “You Look Good in My Shirt.” has nothing to do with not having any “good” songs lately….I believe it is truly to give us fans what we obviously want. At his live show, this song is always a favorite… and that is impressive since it’s never been released. Yes, this is unconventional, but there isn’t anything conventional about Keith Urban. I think Love, Pain, and the Whole Crazy Thing is Keith’s best record to date….The songs have so much more substance and are TERRIFIC live. Keith is all about his live performances, that is how he connects with his fans.

Tanya, I couldn’t agree more! Keith is ever evolving. Isn’t that what artists are supposed to do, dicover something new…push the envelope on what the “norm” is(within reason of course)? As for his current songs not making it to the top, I’m sure that the fact he honestly reaches/connects with his fans is just as good to him. How many artist’s can honestly say that in today’s world? And the 1st release, “Once In A Lifetime” did break debut records correct?!
You Look Good In My Shirt is a fun song, he plays it amazingly both live and on the cd…who cares what album it is from! He has always said his music is an accurate reflection of where he is in his life then, which is why “Love, Pain…” is more about finding the love he’s always searched for, being at peace, and just being happy, nothing sucky about that if you ask me! I for one will be thrilled to jam it when it comes on the radio!!!

Alison, this is my take on this rumor. As you recall, Keith went into Rehab when his last album LPATWCT dropped so he was unable to promote it. The album is wonderful (IMO)but evidently radio people did not take to it. Can’t understand that, but anyway, he has been touring for a year now and no time to record a new album and of course there is soon to be an addition to his family (yippee). He told us, his fans, that he is working on a new album that should be out in the fall, so I’m thinking he’s going to release this song because we love it so much to have some of his music on the radio until his new album comes out! Don’t see anything wrong with going back to a fantastic album to take a song off it to make us happy!! I always felt like there were a lot of great singles on his Golden Road album that never got released!! Keith has the most beautiful voice and he could release a talking album and I would buy it!

I love the song, especially live. I hope he shoots a video of the song with lots and lots of clips from the concerts. You really have to be there to get the full experience but a video of Keith doing anything live on CMT would be a good thing.

LOL at Tanya. You said “His music just has more meaning now and is on the verge of not being traditionally country.”

Keith Urban has always been “traditionally country?!?!” You’re one hilarious chick Tanya!!

Keith’s just keeps coming out with the better songs each time. He is the best musician and he truly believes what he is singing and feeling. None of Keith’s songs ever get old to listen too. He is the best performer/ entertainer that I have seen in concert. I hope he puts a video out for “you look good in my shirt.” It’ll keep us all happy until his new album comes out!

first of all I don’t think it’s a rumor if it came out of his mouth he is releasing “You Look Good in My Shirt” and it has always been a fan favorite long before he ever decided to play that song in the audience so that’s not the only reason fans like that song it’s just a good song that’s going to be ejoyable to hear on radio and it’s amazing but all the songs on his Love Pain and The Whole Crazy Thing were actually all successful not number one but successful

hey always right, sorry but it looks like your wrong. he was traditionally country with his old stuff in his debut album and in the ranch. his style has Definitely changed (for the better). u cant tell me that “walkin’ the country” is the same style of music as “i told you so”.

I think anything Keith does is awesome. He gives you your money’s worth every concert. You truly do have to be there to understand just how awesome this man is! He is the best entertainer I’ve ever seen, and he really connects with the audience. Each performance is unique and different from the other shows. I enjoy every song on every album Keith has! I agree 100% with Candace: Keith’s songs never get too old to listen to. Some of my favorite KU songs are ones that were never released! Go to one of his concerts. You’ll get to see a huge audience singing every word to songs that have never been played on the radio. I love this guy - he is the reason I was “converted to country!” I actually was flipping thru channels one day, and he caught my eye - I stopped to listen, and I was hooked! If I wasn’t a 40 yr old mom of 3, I’d become a KU roadie! I hope he releases a video for this one too!

It has occured to me that one of Keith’s old songs is going to be released as a single. How can you be sure? I don’t want to get my hopes up but I really hope he releases it!!!! He is totally my hero & the fact that he will release an old song for his fans, just puts a tear to my eye! He really appreciates his fans and that makes me so happy! U just gotta love him!!! Oh! And Brittany Edgeworth is my sister. But I am Keith’s number one fan!!!

If Keith had a good NEW song to put out he would, he doesn’t. Time to reach back to a supposedly “sure thing” so he can finally get a #1 - he hasn’t had one since 2005. His last album was cliche-filled pop. “A New Sunshine” is even worse than anything on his last album, not a good sign.

  • Matthew says:

    Posted: May 24th, 2008 at 9:12 am

For the people who aren’t sure if Keith is releasing “You Look Good In My Shirt”

On a radio interview, they asked what he was going to put out next.

He said “We actually re-recorded a song off our Golden Road right after we finished touring [Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy World Tour]. It’s called ‘You Look Good In My Shirt’. We decided to release it as a single because after each show every night, it got a huge amount of requests on radios, e-mails etc.”

He said it to something that effect. It is official.

And Catharine, Keith has had 3 top 5 hits with his latest album. I’d put your money where you mouth is, seriously.

  • Catherine says:

    Posted: May 24th, 2008 at 10:52 am

And I said he hasn’t had any #1 hits since 2005, I wasn’t talking about top 5 hits. “Put your money where your mouth is”? You don’t even make sense.

  • Candice says:

    Posted: May 24th, 2008 at 6:36 pm

Like uh…I’m Keithy’s greatest fan and I’m soooo hoping he puts this song out to radio, as uh, I’ve never heard it before, but he can put whatever uh he wants out because uh..I’m like his #1 fan! And um..unlike Brittany’s friend, I’m like uh at my own house on my mommy’s computer, but I’m not supposed to be on it. Go Keithy!!

This was my pathetic attempt to sound like the typical Keith Urban fan today. :)

Keith Urban is one of the most talented entertainers ever. He can redo anything he wants, because yes, he knows we would love to hear it again! I’m sure his next album will be just as great as anything to date.

He didn’t win any awards! Sour grapes Keith! Your career has suffered since you married the WITCH! Nobody likes you any more! So, go home and play house with your family. Forget touring! Sad that you have to pull out your before Nicole songs, to make any money. Your before Nicole songs will always be your best!

  • Nat says:

Lisa, I so agree with you Keith is the best entertainer ever. And I would be a Keith roadie in a heartbeat if I didn’t have 2 kids. As for Keith releasing Shirt. I say go for it Keith, I know other artist may follow. It is a great song! As for you Ginger you are jealous, why make comments on his wife. His career has not suffered. Keith is a first class performer, and has never once complained about not winning awards!

I find it really funny that people that don’t know Nicole Kidman seem to know that she’s a witc–or a replace the “w”. I have heard numerous interviews with Keith Urban about how happy and thankful he is to have her in his life, the pictures of them together, and his music all say the same thing. I think I’ll take his word for it.
