Shania Twain and Mutt Lange’s Songs Will Endure

Posted: May 15th, 2008 at 2:24 pm  |  By: Craig Shelburne

Shania TwainShania Twain and “Mutt” Lange announced their separation today, and it’s hard for me to imagine what the future holds for them, musically speaking. Their 14-year partnership led to enormous sales (at least 47 million albums in the U.S.), and they co-wrote nearly all of her biggest hits from 1995 to 2005. If you’ve been to a wedding in the last 10 years, you’ve probably heard at least one Shania Twain song, whether it’s the romantic “From This Moment On” or “Forever and For Always” at the ceremony, or something perky like “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” or “Love Gets Me Every Time” at the reception. And who can celebrate an anniversary without “You’re Still the One”?

Anything could happen to Shania’s music at this point. She might take the separation as her cue to reinvent her sound, maybe something rootsy. Or she might forge ahead with her pop-country approach, since she’s always sounded so comfortable in that arena. I don’t know if the split was amicable, so their professional partnership might continue. No matter what happens, I’m always curious to hear what she’s working on, because she’s truly one of the most talented and ambitious country singers we’ve ever had. Even with this separation, their music will endure.

This must be a sad time for everyone involved. They have accomplished a lot on a personal and professional level. I am sure we will give Shania Twain and Mutt Lange the time and space they need during this transitional period. I have defended S.T. on the CMT message boards on when or should she release her next album. That is not as important now as they are trying to raise their son Eja as best as they can. I hope they can get back together again, but if not, let us all hope and pray they can be civil to one another.

I’m completely devastated by this news! I love Shania and I always will, she’s my all time favorite artist and that will never change. The idea that she and Mutt are divorcing is so utterly shocking. That was the last thing in the world I would have ever expected to hear. Their songs are so perfect, so heartfelt, you just knew they put alot of their personal emotion into them. I’m not kidding when I say that I’m feeling the way I’d feel if my own parents were divorcing. I’m going to pray for them, maybe they’ll get back together. They seemed like kindred spirits to me and I’ll always believe that. I wish them both all the strength and love to get through this, no matter what the outcome. May God bless Shania, Mutt, and little Eja.

My heart goes out to the family, and Shania knows what this will mean to their son, and I feel she will know how to handle the situation as she did with her bro and sisters. Hoping it was amicable. Somehow I always felt Mutt had her under his finger, so maybe she will bloom even more!!! It’’s hard to live and work together. Have missed hearing her voice, and can’t wAIT FOR MORE OF sHANIA. wITH LOVE–s.

This is probably the most shoking country music news item in a while. I always thought Shania and Mutt were PERFECT for each other, and I am in utter disbelief by this. I pray for her whole family during all of this, and, although it is not the most important thing right now, I can’t wait to hear from her musically again. :)

Keep in mind Shania has had some very hard times before, I think she’ll survive this event also. I’ve always seen her as a smart and strong person. I know she’ll remain a successful artist without “Mutt”. Good Luck You Two !!!!

I truly hurt for the both of them. Shania and Mutt created the ‘country phenom’ of the 1990 decade. It’s not my place to judge, critize, or say, but inside I’m holding out hope their marriage can be repaired.

This is sad news but it raises lots of questions.
I wonder how her career/life will be without him. He was alwasy so reclusive, will she be seen more now that he’s out of the picture? Will she spread her professional wings and seek out new producers/writers/collaborators? Who gets the SPRAWLING property in New Zealand? Which castle will she get? Will she continue to practice his faith (Sant Mat)?
No doubt she will survive this with her signature strength and I wish her nothing but the best.

Poor Shania. She deserves someone better than Mutt, bc to be honest, he looks like a Mutt. There is a 17-year age difference and I think that could as be the reason for the separation that Mutt terms “unfortunate”. What a scumbag. This is a perfect example of why it is not good to mix business with pleasure. With all the loss in Shania’s life, she deserved to have found a soul partner for life, not some loony, vegetarian freak who feels they have grown apart.

I was pretty surprised at the announcement. Not just because they were together for 17 years, but I remember her speaking of their relationship when it first started. It was love at first sight for both of them. I thought sure those two would stay together. Its sad when you grow apart, but it happens to the best of everyone. I hope all is well with both of them and their child… Love you Shania!

I too was surprised of the separation. But I am sure they both thought it over well. I must laugh though at why people think this is going to hurt her career, many singers have married their managers and divorced. It is her talent that got her were she is in the first place not her husband, he might have helped with songs, but she is still an artist. I am sure Eja will be just fine too. But best wishes to them both :)

It is so very sad to hear that Robert “Mutt” Lange and Shania are splitting up. Thoughts and prayers go out to both of them and to their son, Eja. The way Shania always spoke of “Mutt” in interviews, they sounded very romantic and committed to each other. My best wishes to them both.

I met Shania and “Mutt” on 57th an Fifth Ave. in N.Y.city in 1998. I recognized her out of the multitude of people and went back and caught up with her and “Mutt”. She was a bit shocked but very sweet, gracious and patient with me. She took the time to listen to my song writing aspirations,(I’d just written a tribute to Princess Diana, “Diana”). She advised me to contact her Mercury label(I think it was Mercury) Due to legalities, she could not accept my songs. I found out later that neither would her label accept any outside material. I wrote her through Mercury Records and recieved a most heartfelt personal letter of apology from her. I felt I had touched her in some small way. And I shall never forget her beauty and grace nor that experience.

I pray that she and Mutt will resolve their differences and get back together. This is just too sad!

In case Shania should read this, she may remember the incident, since it’s not every day she probably gets stopped and detained on the streets of NY city:)I am

    Hi,
Actually I’m new here, as an aspiring songwriter. I just recently discovered her song last week, and when I heard Still the One and From this moment on, I felt that magic of love I been looking for.

but quite shock and devastated that they are separated.

    Irony isn’t it?

There words were pretty on paper and probably very heartfelt at the time they wrote and sung them together. But no one should have to live up to the pressure of romantic lyrics if there are real and deep-rooted issues going unresolved with the passing of time. I love Shania! I admire Mutt Lange’s great ear as a musician and producer. But c’mon, these are real lives here. Just like all of the rest of us normal folk. Money, fame, and even great-selling albums cannot sugarcoat core matters that evidently existed and eroded a great partnership. Let it be a lesson to all of us that even the strongest, committed, spiritual, loving and creative unions are still subject to intrusion, rejection, elusiveness and eventual detachment. Take nothing for granted. Afterall…a TRUE love doesn’t grow apart. Not in my book.

  • jewel tone says:

    Posted: May 20th, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Must agree. But I too was initially shocked and saddened by the news. When one thinks of Shania, one thinks of Mutt Lange. They were like Frick and Frack (sorry, not so romantic, huh..) Okay, they were like two spoons nestled together in their own hidden forest in a corner of the world. How’s that? Hah-hah.

Seriously, no laughing matter. I am particularly concerned for Shania, because the reports I have been reading indicate that she was “shocked”; afterall HE is the one who filed for divorce. During so many interviews, award shows and up on the concert stage she has acknowledged her love for the man and for all that he has done for her. It doesn’t seem contrived. You really believed that she did love him as a man and not just the producer and that their joining up was just magical. Who can forget the story about him discovering her while he was in Europe surfing the t.v. and coming across her vivaciousness on CMT Europe? Every guy wished he had that kind of artistic power to woo a Shania Twain. And every girl out there would’ve loved to have been her, especially an aspiring singer who was taken for granted and ignored for her real capabilities. We all fell in love with the story.

But love is not a fairy tale, sad but true. Shania is like Tina Turner and all of those other great women leaders in the world: she is a survivor. Perhaps this is a part of the story where she will be propelled to grow further as an artist. Maybe she will feel the need to write on a different level. Or maybe she will bounce back with some empowering songs that yes, you fall, and so just dust off those knees and get back up. Personally, these last few years I was getting a little confused about their union anyhow. He just seemed weird in the end…he made her a star, but then he wanted to take the star away from us and hide her in a castle. And after she made those sacrifices for him - if the rumors are true about the affair with the secretary - he releases his gilded butterfly for a moth, I am sure with a yawn! we just grew apart b.s. Perhaps the rumors are wrong, and for Shania’s dignity and self-respect I hope that they are, but if he did cheat on her with some low-life wannabe tramp who lived in Shania’s shadow, then I can only say that those um..San Mat principles about abstaining from sex must be on a contingent basis.

I was so surprised about the split between Shania and Mutt. I thought they were lifers. I agree with Jewel Tone on the San Mat principles aobut abstaining from sex. If this is true regarding Mutt and the secretary, he must have not read that part of the book. Also, Patti Clark Barnett, you did redifine the word TACKY. Shania, I will pray for you and your family. You are an awesome person!

    To: G.K. and Barbara

What part of interesting and honest don’t you understand? And what part of, “Tacky” was redefined? Since your need to be critical of something that doesn’t concern you at all, has already defined it thorougly.
You may be the only two wet blankets on the planet?
Meeting Shania Twain and then hubby, in ‘98(not’97)in such an unexpected way, was well worth sharing- according to most normal thinking people. And, by the way, she was more than just patient, she was interested in what I had to say.
Sorry, your lives are very likely so mundane and boring, you find yourselves compelled to use that tired old, “Tacky” tag for anything otherwise. But then, some people are pretty creatively challenged. Something tells me you both have read my,”Other” mail(Blog) and got ticked.

Shania Twain is the living definition of class and grace and this absent in much of the world today. She deserves to be treated better than this. What kind of complete idiot leaves an incredible women like Shania. He needs to pull his head out of his @#$ and figure out what is important in life. I can assure him the grass will not be greener where ever he lands. He married way above his head and apparently could not handle that fact. So he is running away like a scared little girl. Shania you and your son will be in my thoughts prayers.

Hey Eileen if you read this maybe you should bring your son and come back to Canada. Come over and visit my family (good fishing) we live on a lake in Northwestern Ontario with all the black flies. Wow that sure would make anyone want to come up to the great north west,ha ha. Anywho time and some darn good friends and family will get you through this tough time. Take care, holly
