Why doesn't Miranda Lambert write about angels, Jesus, happy days and kids? Parade's James Brady found out why.
Johnny Cash made him do it. And once Joaquin Phoenix learned to play guitar for Walk the Line, he's been pursuing his passion for music.

The Miranda story link doesn’t work. I assume this is what you meant to link to: http://www.parade.com/articles/editions/2008/edition_05-11-2008/In_Step_With…Miranda_Lambert

Though Miranda may not know it she is subscribing to the Harlan Howard school of thought. A while back while watching a Nashville music documentary on Ovation which featured Harlan Howard,(my version of what I saw) he told a story of working with a young songwriter one day and all that was coming out was happy love, sunshine type songs. Harlan said he didn’t feel well, maybe they should take a break, get something to eat and he said inside himself he was thinking ‘Someone’s just got to tell this kid.’ So over the food, Harlan said to the kid something like, “Kid, you need to get a good divorce.” The kid replied, “But I just got married”.
I think what Harlan was saying is that country song writing needs some ‘life experience’, i.e. some of the pain, the depth in our human condition.
No matter the pros and cons of that thought, I never met a Harlan Howard song I didn’t love, so Miranda, go one and do just what you have to do. You go, woman! Harlan, I’ll never stop loving you.
