Re: “blurring the lines between what’s country and what’s pop” - My line is internal, yet very clear, “I know it (country) when I hear it.”
However, songs can be universally shopped. For me it is the interpretation of the song that defines the genre. It is nothing new or recently clever that songs go between the contemporary pop or country markets.
Artists - there’s an insistent trend for some otherwise ‘outdated’ artists to make an venture into the country market. There are some ‘artists’ that no longer have a good ‘fit’ in the rock, pop genre that want to somehow continue w/music (survive). There is also the latest trend toward collaberation - collaberation can bring creativity and entertainment well (Maroon 5 and Sara Evans) or can crash and burn.
Fans - Country fans have always been a stable and loyal environment. Country fans buy music. The country fan in myself is somewhat cautious about all the latest in collaberations. I’m open minded, listening, somewhat tolerant, but not always accepting of what I hear.
Money - Country fans buy music, go to concerts and support their artists. Money is tight right now. Other artists want to tap into that resource. I’m thinking a lot of the pop, hip-hop, and current rock world would crash and smash if parents would ever take the credit cards and cash away. The young fan base would be cleared from the equation.
Once again my country line is clear, “I know it when I hear it” and will pay to hear it some more.
