Soccer Moms Know Best

Posted: May 9th, 2008 at 2:42 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

People who aren’t into country music are pretty quick to classify it as “music for soccer moms.” As if that’s a bad thing. Like soccer moms have no taste, thereby making the music they have chosen to play in their minivans less cool than whatever alt-emo-pop music other folks are listening to. And those folks are partially right. Middle-aged suburban moms do make up a big portion of country radio listeners and are responsible for a lot of what’s left of retail CD sales. But those folks are wrong about moms not having enough smarts to recognize good music. A soccer mom is, in fact, one the most astute people you’ll ever know. How else would you explain her ability to make the top bunk bed, create a new dinner out of leftovers, hide the burnt bagel under grape jelly, prepare a bottle at 2 a.m., know which plants are poisonous, get all the tangles out so the French braids look better, sew Halloween costumes without a sewing machine, memorize Goodnight Moon, have an immunization schedule in her head, buy snacks and drinks for the entire team plus each player’s siblings, coax a screaming toddler into a car seat, bathe three kids at once, push a stroller with one hand and hold a wobbly two-wheeler with the other, keep 20 kids happy during the last 15 minutes of a birthday party, get Popsicle juice stains off a Sunday dress, be good enough at Guitar Hero to unlock Slash, time the brownies so they come out of the oven just as the school bus arrives, attach Girl Scout badges to the sash without bleeding, know the orthodontist’s phone number by heart, teach fractions with every sliced apple, and gauge a fever with a kiss on the forehead?

So Happy Mother’s Day to all those country-lovin’ soccer moms who are smart enough to know a good thing when they hear it.

You’re right… “music for soccer moms” is music for people who are too busy to think much about music. It’s easy, disposable, fluffy, perfectly inoffensive, and on every Clear Channel owned station near you.

Soccer moms get a bad rap, one that they often don’t deserve.

But this blog does nothing to show that soccer moms have good taste in music.

The blog writes, “But those folks are wrong about moms not having enough smarts to recognize good music. A soccer mom is, in fact, one the most astute people you’ll ever know. How else would you explain her ability to make the top bunk bed, create a new dinner out of leftovers, hide the burnt bagel under grape jelly, prepare a bottle at 2 a.m.”

I grant that soccer moms are skilled at running a household, which is an admittedly difficult task. But what exactly does that have to do with taste in music? Nothing so far as I can see.

If soccer moms really are “the most astute people,” they will easily see through this flawed analysis.
