Sierra Hull Sees Her New CD at Merlefest

Sierra Hull 5:30 a.m. That's a hard hour to get up when you know a long day at school lies just beyond your rising! Especially when you've just spent the last three days at Merlefest in Wilkesboro, N.C. -- one of the most exciting festivals I get to attend all year. This year's Merlefest was indeed a very busy one, but a total blast of many sorts!

I arrived at the hotel late Thursday evening just in time for a short rehearsal with the band. Friday morning we played our first set on the Creekside stage, which is one of my favorites at the whole festival. One thing that was particularly exciting about this year's Merlefest is that it was the first in which I've had my new album, Secrets (out May 6 on Rounder) for sale. Upon arriving to the festival Friday morning, I had not even seen a final packaged copy of the record yet. They were shipped directly there, hot off the printer! It was quite funny then having someone in the crowd bring me a copy to sign -- that was my first time seeing it!

Saturday night also brought on a really awesome jam session between myself, Cory Walker (banjo), Jacob Eller (bass), Darrell Webb (guitar) and Hunter Berry (fiddle). Jamming like that is one of the main reason I love playing music so much. It was really fun and certainly one of the best things about the weekend!

P.S. Let me also just say - the Sam Bush Band put on a killer show Friday night! I sometimes forget how truly amazing Sam is not only as a player, but as a singer too. Scott Vestal always blows me away. The whole band was fantastic and so well put together.

It was great to see you perform at Merlefest this year. I thought you did a really amazing job on the Mando Mania gig, showing the older guys how it is done! Keep up the amazing work and keep honing the wonderful gift you have.

I just bought the album and it is wonderful! I’m so excited that you are performing at my school on 6/13, and at the Mayville (NY) Bluegrass Festival this weekend. I hope I can meet and talk with you sometime. As a music teacher,I’m so impressed with your playing and singing. I think you will be an inspiration to my students.

I heard you at Merlefest and you blew me away. After hearing you at the creeside stage I went around trying to catch all your sets. really fantastic! I hope you record “Are you afraid of dying” on your next CD. Your voice brought out the beauty of the song. It really touched both my husband and myself. Thank you.
