Take Our Daughters to Blog Day

Posted: April 24th, 2008 at 9:58 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Blogger's note: To celebrate Take Our Daughters to Work Day, I've let my oldest daughter write my blog today to show her what life is like in this grueling career I've chosen. And while she's literally rolling her eyes as I type this (as if to say "OMG, Mom, you are so totally lame"), she knows that what I get to do every day is pretty cool.

I like all types of music. Well, most types anyway, but I'm going to tell you why I like country. To make it in country, you have to bring something new. Like how Taylor Swift writes her own songs about things like the boys that she knows. I like the new kind of country. I'm not exactly into bluegrass, and my friends and I don't really ever dance around to Johnny Cash. But I do like Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, and lots of other people. They mix pop, rock and country.

Another thing that I like about country is the lyrics. I'm not talking about the songs that mention alcohol and other bad stuff. I'm talking about the songs that tell stories. I like to write, and want to be a journalist (kind of like my mom), but maybe I'll grow up and then end up being a songwriter. Those are much better than cheesy pop songs that repeat the same line about 50 times. In country, the songs actually mean something. When I listen to songs from rap artists sometimes I can barely understand them. That's just my opinion, though.

Another thing I like is the instruments in country music: mandolin, acoustic guitar and fiddle, even though I can't stand it when my little sister plays her violin. And I like it when the artists use different instruments, like the electric guitar with the classic ones. That sounds really cool and unique.

I get to go to concerts sometimes with my mom. She only reports on country music, though, so I'm not sure if all concerts are like the ones I've seen, but I always have tons of fun. Well, I think that's about it! I'd like to thank my mom and the nice people at CMT for letting me do this. Thanks for reading my blog.

    Maddy:

The nice part about your ma’s job is that she can stay in the home office vs. being gone 8 to 10 hours a day. The other interesting side is that you are really getting into what you mother has a passion for….. being from Motown who would have ever thought about Alison B being so involved in country music and the stars behind it.

    Enjoyed your comments.

    All the best, Uncle John

Hi, Maddy, I was really glad to hear your veiws on country music. I agree with you about the newer songwriters because I like the ones better that are a mix of pop and rock and country, too. I wish i could get my kids to listen, too! Your mom is lucky to have you! You are good at writing, too, like her. Thanks for contributing!

Props to your Mom and CMT for giving you the opportunity to write Maddy. I hope that receiving comments like this from total strangers freaks you out in a good way and motivates you to continue writing - the world has changed an the I believe that the ability to communicate - to write and express yourself well is going to be a critical skill going forward - so - maybe this will whet your appetite.

As for the songwriting thing - my writing partner (Kelli) and I have a saying that a good song needs great music but a great song needs great lyrics too - we think it’s much more fun if you can follow a story through and identify with the characters and what’s going on - Country is definitely th best place to start although we are now blending blues and rock into the mix.

Whatever path you choose - be it journalist, songwriter or even astronaut - I wish you the very best

    Andrew

    You are incredible!
I too love country music. I’ve been listening to it since 6th grade when I got my first horse and the only music they played in the barn was country. Barbara Mandrell, Crystal Gayle, Loretta Lynn and David Allen Coe. Horses & country music may have been what influenced me to move out west!. Your are a great young writer already…Maybe you’ll follow in your mom’s foot steps. What a cool job.

Better watch out Alison….Here comes Maddy!

    Maddy ,
What a great article! You are so very talented! I think you had a great idea. Becoming a song writer, its the best of both worlds. Hey maybe you could help Tim McGraw write a song. He always says he has trouble writing and I am sure you could help him out. Best of Luck!!!
