I Told You So, I Told You So

Keith Urban and Carrie UnderwoodI didn’t see any of Keith Urban’s co-headlining dates with Carrie Underwood, but it appears after reading numerous reviews, they missed an opportunity to slip the same title into their set lists. Urban released “I Told You So” a year ago (April 17), and I remember at the time thinking when I first saw the title that maybe he was covering Randy Travis.

Nope. Completely different song. Underwood subsequently covered that classic song, now 20 years old, on Carnival Ride, though it appears she scratched it on her tour dates with Urban. Lots of songs have similar titles, and here’s a smattering of (almost) identical titles that caused some level of confusion:

“Candy Man”: A journalist once laughably reported that Mickey Gilley & Charly McClain had covered Sammy Davis Jr.’s song from the “Willie Wonka” movie. In fact, their “Candy Man” was a Roy Orbison song.

“Don’t Be Cruel”: Elvis Presley cut his standard in 1956, but there are probably lots of relative newbies who know only Bobby Brown’s rendition.

“I Believe In You”: Don Williams‘ version is now the standard. Mel Tillis‘ take, released two years earlier, was co-written by Kenny Chesney’s producer, Buddy Cannon.

“Little Rock”: For Reba McEntire, this was a song of independence. For Collin Raye, it was a song about kicking alcohol dependence.

“Love Song”: The Lee Greenwood-penned Kenny Rogers ballad is completely different from the Oak Ridge Boys‘ song with a doo-wop breakdown. And different from Anne Murray’s “A Love Song,” written by Kenny Loggins. And different from Jeff Bates‘ “The Love Song”…

“Young Love”: The Judds ultimately added parentheses to make their song “Young Love (Strong Love),” differentiating it from Sonny James‘ 1956 classic.

I know, I know. There are tons more of these…

Why is it that there are so many of the true country artists from yesterday that really paved the way for the so called country singers of today, that seem to have beemn forgotton unless they’ve got cauhgt doing doing drugs or whatever? You still acknowledge the ones of today even if they fall in that same category? One of the true gifted artists was Johnny Rodriquez,Moe Bandy and Tanya Tucker.

We should all pile our voices together and have Keith and Carrie do their verson of “Stop Dragging My Heart” on the next awards show. That would be awesome!
