Can You Hear Country in Snoop Dogg's New Song?

Posted: April 17th, 2008 at 6:55 am  |  By: Craig Shelburne

When the rapper Snoop Dogg came backstage at the CMT Music Awards on Monday night, one of my colleagues turned to me and asked, "What in the world is he doing here?" Here's the answer - in the words of Snoop Dogg himself:

"I have a new single called ‘My Medicine' and I'm going to get a lot of country artists to perform on it, because it was inspired by country music and by the late Johnny Cash. So I just wanted to try to get a couple of artists to be a part of it, and they agreed to do it, so be on the lookout for it."

Check out this live performance from VH1 Storytellers and tell us if you think he can really make it in country music.

By the way, what is it about Johnny Cash that appeals to the rapper so much?

"His whole style. His whole persona, his whole way of making music, just being real. His music touched people like myself, which you probably didn't know that. That's why I'm wearing all black tonight, in dedication to my main man, JC homeboy."

Are you kidding me?????There is no way country will embrace a song about sending your woman out to prostitute herself then spend the money to buy her man drugs…..
If he thinks Johnny Cash would have liked that he’s crazy.

Seems everybody wants a peice of country history.
Snoop , Eagles ect. I would assume it is for the money (extra cash) But country in its day come from the heart not just from good singers. Good luck CMT your in for a ride. Just because it is titled country does not remove the stripes from the tiger. It is still a tiger. with an a
    appetite not a heart.

Snoop is allowed to sing about what he wants to sing about. I think it’s a fun song even if the lyrics are a little crazy - like country artists have never sang songs that were… “immoral”. Snoop Dogg is embracing country music and instead of being appreciative people are hatin on him. Let the man do what he wants to do. I’m sure Johnny Cash didn’t inspire the lyrics for the song but rather the beat. I think it’s great! Go Snoop Dogg! ;)

What happened to Country music. Are the music company bean counters throwing in any trash they can find, calling it Country so they can get their thirty pieces of silver.
Snoop Dogg knows nothing about Country music, Bon Jovi is not Country,
The Eagles are not Country. Do not try to pass off crappy rap songs like “Ride a Cowboy” as Country Or you might as well start considering 50 Cent a Country Artist.
As a faithfull Country music fan since hearing my fathers Hank williams LPs, I’m disgusted what passes for Country music today. I know a lot of fans like watching Taylor Swifts “Our Song” video. But listen up people, It’s bubblegum music. Might as well have been done by The Archies.
I don’t listen to Country as much as I use to, really since radio stopped playing Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, George Jones and started playing the latest one hit wonders so they could make a few quick bucks. I wish people would go buy some classic Country so they would know what good Country music sounded like.
I’ve been wanting to say this for a long time. Are there any others who feel the same way or am I standing all alone?

While I agree with some of the previous posts, what does “good country” look like? I think there are a lot of artists who carry the moniker of “Country Artists” with the integrity it deserves. Look at Brad Paisley. Look at Josh Turner. I think those two carry themselves in a way that befits a good country artist. Why? The produce quality music that doesn’t sound like pop music. They find songs that, at their core, root themselves in country music.

There are many other artists that come to mind, but I have to get back to work. And, I would ask again, what does “good” country music look and sound like? Is that something we can define?

Snoop Dog did a good job singing this country song but you can still hear some rap/rhythm in this song. Some country song’s have rap in them as the words rhyme.

Sorry Snoop Dogg you should stick to raping…
I mean what the hell is next? Isent country music soposed to come from the heart and soul? Why would any one sing a song about a woman going out to be a prostatute just to get money for her boyfriend’s drugs?

I don’t care what any one says that isent country music…

I remember an interview with Johnny Cash telling about walking out of a record company’s office and seeing some ragged kid jump up and tell him he was a big fan. The kid was Bob Dylan and Johnny told him (Dylan) that he had just heard Dylan’s alblum and liked it. Johnny spoke of how both artists were influenced by the other’s music. This isn’t a case of country bringing in a rapper, it’s a rapper putting some country in his music. Maybe some of Snoop Dogg’s fans will hear this song and say “Hey, I kinda like the sound of that” and they’ll go find some Johnny Cash to listen to. I grew up listening to Johnny Cash and until today I have never heard more than one or two lines of Snoop Dogg’s music. I know I won’t be listening for anything else from him but at least give him some credit for acknowleging the talents of The Man in Black and sharing them with his fans.

It’s not country, but what is these days? The aura of the song definitely seems inspired by Cash, but I’m not sure late-life Cash would have approved of the message. Cash wasn’t one to trash anybody though, so he’d have artfully stated his opinion. I like Snoop and have no problem with his foray into the countrier side of things. I don’t care for the message - but I can separate myself from the “immoral-ness” of the song as I could from drinking and cheating songs by “real” country artists. Don’t get so bent by this. No biggie… he’s not gonna steal a chart position from the newest Rascal Flatts cookie cutter song.

I agree that it isn’t country music as we know it and love it. But I think it’s great when artists outside our genre acknowledge their love and respect for country music. He tried something different - isn’t that what artists should be doing? Wouldn’t Johnny be proud of him for making the effort and bringing something fresh and country sounding to his traditional hip-hopping rapping audience?
Traditional country music will never die - you just need to look harder to find it now.

The songs words are hip-hop and street oriented just like the rest of his songs. The rest of the posts are right, he doesnt know country…he knows the streets.

and its BS to say that country music hasn’t be-littled woman both Hank Williams and Johnny Cash wrote songs about leavin and cheatin…

As I read these blogs of what happened to country music I cant help but wonder what category of country everyone views rockabilly as. The funny thing to this all is the song sang by Snoop Dog is dedicated to Johnny Cash. Johnny Cash was part of an era of country music that was not widely accepted as country by traditionalists of his time. It was a far stretch from the sounds of Hank Williams Sr., Marty Robbins, Roy Acuff etc. As times have changed, we now look to Johnny Cash as a model of what country music should be but this was not the case in his era. This era where rockabilly country emerged was popular with country music fans in the 1950s, and was recorded and performed by country musicians and some other musicians that were not necessarily mainstream country artists. Within a few years many rockabilly musicians returned to their mainstream style, or had defined their own unique style. The industry may have been influenced by this but it was again taken back to its roots by the traditionalists of country. I believe that when there is a strong outside influence on the country music industry such as the 1950’s rock and roll was, it will naturally spill over into country. In other words history is repeating itself and some rap styles are spilling over in the modern era of country music (Save a Horse, Our Song). The Country Music industry may take a few changes in adjustment to the era, see a few oddballs like Snoop Dog making “country songs”, and may see some unique styles of country music, but as long as we have a few traditionalists around the roots of country will remain and hold the rest of the industry intact. So no worries! There will be someone to “Fill Their Shoes”.

THAT IS NOT IN ANY WAY COUNTRY MUSIC. look we have rap which is for people w/ no talent like snoop dog then we have country music for people that can do more than speak words that rhyme. then again, country has gone down anyways. how is it possible country goes from what it was in the early 50’s to the early 90’s and then just becomes so poppy, so predictable, and flat out wimpy to the point where none of todays stuff is all that COUNTRY. man i need me a beer or 7

Country music is slowly but surely becoming a melting pot for whatever kind of music out there that needs a new label, or for has-beens trying to kickstart their careers. ie Bon Jovi, David Lee Roth, Robert Plant, Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock, Kelly Clarkson, Snoop Dogg, etc. The list goes on and on.

When I turned on the CMT video awards and saw Robert Plant and Alison Krauss steal the spotlight from a new guy on the scene like Jack Ingram, it disgusted me. Jack Ingram is and has been breaking the boundaries of traditional country in a good way - by giving the music the edginess, contemporary sounds, and overall image/style change that it needs right now. Don’t get me wrong… I wouldn’t have minded if Willie would have won either.

It just kind of makes me cringe when I see CMT air that crap. I understand that it will never be a top 10 or anything, but it takes spotlight and airtime from guys out there who really need and deserve more exposure right now (ie Jack, and countless others).

Most of today’s so-called Country is a joke let’s go back to the days of Johny, Waylon and Willie. Having snoop dog on a country award show is a good ratings ploy. It’s sad when Nashville caters to the city people, and they ignore the country, farmers in the blue collar workers.
Oh yeah for the record I am a 26year old male and not someone reflecting on their youth 40 years ago

So, is everyone saying that this is not music you can relate to? I understand that some sort of “gatekeeping” function needs to happen here, but, do we really think this will get played?

Again, what is defined as “Country Music”? Is it purely Hank Williams (junior or senior)? Is it purely Dolly Parton or Willie Nelson or George Jones? Where is the line? Which artists go behind the boundary line as “safe for country music”?

Some of you got it right. The rest, well you are entitled to your opinion. Just too bad you opinion comes off as exclusionary, elitist, closed minded and ignorant. Country Music is American music and there is room in the genre for everyone and anyone who enjoys and is touched by it’s sensibilities.

Don’t talk about off-color or immoral lyrics unless you are ready to condem about 1/2 of what Johnny Cash and many others did - have you never heard Cocaine Blues?

Don’t make it about race, because country music influences and is influenced by artists of all colors and cultures.

And don’t make it about “gangster” or have you forgotten all the Outlaws and friends such as Billy Joe Shaver or David Allen Coe.

You can’t complain about the way popular culture and society stereotypes Country Music fans and culture and then act like a backwards jackass.

Get it right, open the doors up and welcome EVERYone.

Let me clarify that I have been a country music fan since I was a small child. However, this whole argument about what is country and what is not is really humorous to me. Reba once said that there are only two kinds of music: good and bad. I tend to agree with that. People always talk about country music and its roots. I admire and respect that, but we can’t get so caught up in the past that we forget to look ahead to the future. Make no mistake about it, Johnny Cash was not considered country in his day. He sang songs about killing people “just to watch them die” and was an outcast by the industry (even up until his death in many ways). Same goes for Waylon and Willie. Same goes for Garth Brooks. Those people broke boundaries and a lot of people said they weren’t country during the peaks of their careers. Tim McGraw said it best in his song “Things Change.” “Some say its too country, some say its too rock and roll, but its just good music if you can feel it in your soul.” For me to appreciate music it doesn’t have to be labeled “country”.

By the way, I find it interesting that we all hold Johnny Cash as this great standard bearer of country music yet bash many of the artists that he loved. In the last few years of his life Johnny Cash recorded songs by great country artists like Nine Inch Nails, Danzig, Soundgarden, Depeche Mode, Tom Petty, U2, The Eagles, and The Beatles. If they are good enough for Johnny Cash they are good enough for me whether they are considered country or not.

well, i have to say, that some of the comments really surprise me. I was listening to Johnny Cash (as my mother told me) since before i could read. i used to take the Cash records out and play them on my little record player. So having said that, i have devoted my life to studying his life and his music. I am one of the biggest Cash fans on the face of the earth.I have met him on more than one occasion. I didn’t know him personally, although i really wish that were true, he influenced me greatly, through his music and the kind of human being he was, with all his faults. He never denied his shortcomings, and his weakness as a human being. He showed love and tolerance, and he never seem to take offense to artists attempting to change “Country Music” to fit another generation. He was accepting and always open minded, something that i am afraid that a great deal of these people that have commented do not seem to be. Johnny Cash would have listened to what Snoop Dog had to say with an open mind and an open heart, why can’t you? By the way, Johnny Cash didn’t ALWAYS sing about clean stuff, what about “Cocaine Blues” & Delia’s Gone”, just to name a few, was that about “clean” living? I certainly think not!!! Johnny Cash sang about LIFE,good, bad, and indifferent, so LISTEN UP ASSHOLES, if Johnny Cash were here now, he’d give you the same thing he gave the photographer in San Quentin in 1969, the ******* finger!

just for the record, i am NOT a fan of Snoop Dog, i have never listened to his music before, but i listened to this one, and i think its really nice that he is trying to expand his horizons. It seems to be the kind of sone that Cash would have liked. its truthful….no bull****…..

I do not like Cowboy Troy I feel he has no business being in country and Snoop would be the same, I like Snoop as a personality but not as a country artist. Looks have nothing to do with it, I hated the way the Kentucky Headhunters looked but their music was pretty good. I agree with the person that compared Taylor swift to bubblegum, she is a very talented girl and some of her songs have a definite country flair, but she of course is attracting a younger generation. I am a big fan of the old style and luckily some of the artist are still that type.

I want to know who those artists are so I stop listening to their music. (And I have a feeling I know who would jump on board . . . if this proves to be true, I’m through with HIM.) This song is disgusting . . . and to dedicate it to Johnny Cash … insulting.

Seems country music has changed so much that a punk like Snoop Dog things he stands a chance.

Oh btw, I don’t think country fans will embrace him. (Maybe your Rascal Flatts, Kenny Cheseny, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift fans . . . ) I’d like to see them get angry about it, myself. This is what happens when CMT is run by the same people that run MTV and VHI. What happened to playing real country like Hank, Johnny, George, Alan, and Waylon. Half the stuff on CMT is now what I consider country, it’s POP music and to mainstream. I have nothing against Snoop Dogg or this song, it’s just not country and it does not belong on a Country Music Site.

Oh my goodness! Come-on now! Once upon a time, I used to listen to R&B when you actually had to have some talent. But I have to say that in the last 10 years or so R&B has gone down the tubes. All it is is men degrading women, talking about shooting and killing people; and all so-called R&B artists can say is “it’s real life”. But I have totally crossed over and I will not listen to that crap! Now Country Music on the other hand is ALL positive ALL the time! You will NEVER hear a proper southern man say anything degrading about a woman or use profanity in their music. To a proper southern man, women are to be cherished, admired and put on a pedistool. What exactly is it that “Poop-Dog” thought was country about that disgusting display of so-called music? Just because he used the name Johnny Cash? Yup, I’d say that rap is getting desperate. And if ANY rapper cannot write a song about something positive and desplay genuine respect for women when it comes to country music, I say “don’t even entertain this disgusting display of hopelessness”. Man, I will bet Johnny turned over in his grave hearing his name in the midst of that CRAP!

Obviously, there is no way Snoop and George Strait can possibly be on the same channel, this wont last and the sooner people stop bitchin about it the sooner I wont have to see Snoop dogg on the first page of cmt.com.

After listening to the song, I don’t think country music fams have anything to worry about because they aren’t going to buy this at all. The only other point I might think is that Snoop has become the entertainer’s entertainer like just a distraction from the norm for some country artists and this too shall pass. Well, maybe just one more point, I do think Johnny Cash would have understood this song, where it was coming from and passed on it.

I am seeing the same types of comments and I tend to agree. I have listened to country music since I was born and CMT is beginning to get off track. MTV has turned it into pop country. I believe that all music has its place, and rap does not belong in country music. I am also beginning to mwonder where all of our old favorites have gone. I appreciate new artists that are fresh and young such as Taylor Swift…..I am a big fan of her and her guitar but I am really missing alot of the old favorites like Dolly and Willy or even Kris Kristofferson. Where was George Strait at the CMT’s? We need more artists like Brad Paisley and Martina McBride who grab a hold of country music and religion.
I am really starting to worry with everyone trying to get their own “piece” of country music like it’s easy……What does everyone else think??

I don’t think he’s trying to “go country”. It’s the first song of his I’ve ever listened to all the way through. It’s got a good beat, with the typical bad rap message. Just my opinion, but I think he’s just trying out a new sound, and at least this won’t vibrate my car seat at the red light!
My Daddy thought Hank, Jr. was out of control in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Now he’s a “legend”, there’s no danger of Snoop being a country legend. So don’t get so bent out of shape folks.

  • hotelmotel says:

    Posted: April 17th, 2008 at 10:41 pm

    Let me say three things:

    1) The Snoop Dogg song isn’t the greatest, but its better than at least 5 singles currently in the Mainstream Country Top 40 charts.

    2) I doubt that Snoop is trying to “go country.” This is a one-time thing, probably, and no big deal. The song itself isn’t particularly country, nor is it likely to get much radio-play. Snoop probably realizes this.

    3) The amount of hatred directed toward Snoop in this thread is far out of proportion to what he has done; namely, sing a decent, but not great country-ish song in public.

I have to conclude that the venom directed toward Snoop has little to do with his musical abilities, and more to do with benighted social views of some fans.

    Posted: April 18th, 2008 at 1:03 am

LOL! Is this a joke or just for fun? I hope so because I’m from the country and if this is supposed to be country music then just shoot me. This song is not country, it’s not even country-rap, and what does that spell? D-O-double-G crap! Snoop is as country as George Strait and Jennifer Nettles are urban rappers. It was cool for classic rock to mix with country but we don’t want every other genre doing it. Rap and country are like oil and water. I love modern country and country/rock but let’s not push it and ruin the genre. It’s dumb changes like this that ruined the old real classic rock genre. I won’t be surprised if this song makes it on country radio. Next we’ll probably see Britney Spears and Paris Hilton go country and hear their songs on radio. If the record companies and radio had more of a sense of what fans love you’d be promoting and playing real country artists who are from the country and know how to sing country, not just say they are. Get real. It’s time to put a limit on pop country and sway back towards roots a little.

I’m sure Snoop on the CMT awards offended some conservative country fans. I guess it’s all about trying to increase ratings. There’s a reason why MTV, VH1, and CMT have separate channels and audiences. That how we like it and let’s keep it that way. We know how to use our remotes.

    Family Tradition

Country music singers have always been a real close family
But lately some of my kin folks have disowned a few others and me
I guess its because I kinda changed my direction
Lord, I guess I went and broke their family tradition

They get on me, wanna know
    Hank, why do you drink
Hank, why do you roll smoke
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote
Over and over everybody made my prediction
So if I get stoned I’m just carryin on an old family tradition

I am very proud of my Daddy’s name
Although his kinda music and mine ain’t exactly the same
Stop and think it over, put yourself in my position
If I get stoned and sing all night long
    It’s a family tradition

So don’t ask me, Hank, why do you drink
Hank, why do you roll smoke
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote
If I’m down in a honkytonk
Some old slicks tryin to give me friction
I say leave me alone I’m singin all night long
    It’s a family tradition

    Whooo

Lordy, I have loved some ladies
And I have loved Jim Beam
And they both tried to kill me in 1973
And when that doctor asked me
Son, how did you get in this condition
I said, hey, sawbones I’m just carryin on
    An old family tradition

So don’t ask me, Hank, why do you drink
Hank, why do you roll smoke
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote
    Stop and think it over
Try and put yourself in my unique position
If I get stoned and sing all night long
    It’s just a family tradition

Okay everybody, I listen to all kinds of music from rap to country. I love both sides but Snoop’s beat was killer. Don’t you think he will be dissed by other rapper’s except for sisqo, bobby b, and nelly. But hey Johnny Cash influenced a lot of people just like Bono in these days and years. Everybody knew Cash and everybody knows Bono. So don’t hate’m for his song or anything, I really like it that more artist are interested in country because it was never that popular but it is one of the top 3 music genre’s of these years. Hey doesn’t country mean to accept everybody for who they are and where they come from but you guys are judging so much on Snoop because of where he comes from. Watch his reality TV “Father Hood” and you get to see how he is in real life. He isn’t that gang member. I hope country music gets more into mainstream music scene and that other artist’s can use country to help them just like Bon Jovi using country as a tester to see if it will work. I accept any new oncomers from the other music genre’s to try country. Well that is my opinion, don’t go judging others because you think they don’t belong. Have a good night

These days country music is the cleanest genre of music out there (excluding religious music). A person can easily listen to country music and not feel the need to pray for forgiveness.

Wow!!!! I was introduced to country music in 1982 when I came to the south for school. I listened to Hank Jr’s greatest hits and have been a country fan ever sense. Country fans and artists are great Americans. I have always thought this group to be genuine, charitable and honest.

The songs are diverse. An inspirational song is followed by a rowdy song about drinking and cheating. I believe that anyone that gives country music a chance will keep listening. Any artist would have a great time writing and performing this music.

All I am seeing on this page is racism and elitism. I wish I did not read these postings. My entire perception of the “country” values is tarnished. Rather than acknowledge the popularity of country music, you would rather close the doors. Are you trying to form a private club? Is CMT and country radio supposed to draw lines in the sand for who can and cannot create music or listen to the venue? Are you worried about snoop dogs character or the color of his skin? Jonny Cash used drugs and women in his youth. He made music with a wide variety of artists and may have been first in line to do this video with snoop dog.

Forget about what Martina, Reba, Hank Jr and George Strait think about snoop dog. What must they be thinking about country fans??????

I’m not going to repeat what I said above, but this really is funny to me. My grandmother raised me on Conway, George Jones, Merle Haggard, etc. I know and love old school country music. I am an old soul in a 29 year old body. However, are we really too narrow minded to accept or listen to anything that isn’t officially labeled country? This Snoop song is not good so I’m not defending Snoop, but to me this is a much bigger issue. Someone up above asked what the Eagles were doing at the awards. Seriously, are you kidding me? Bands like Diamond Rio, Restless Heart, and even Rascal Flatts are direct descendants of the Eagles. No doubt about it. What about Robert Plant? Yeah, he was in Led Zeppelin and has freely admitted he was influenced by the Everly Brothers. The Everly Brothers had a #1 country hit. I just think it would be beneficial before bashing other forms of music to realize that music doesn’t come packaged in a nice little box. The lines are blurred. I personally think that is a good thing. Unfortunately, it is the exact comments in this post as to why The Grammys, American Music Awards and other all-genre award shows look at all of us like we are a bunch of hicks for loving country music. We think they are narrow minded, but in reality (by the comments in this post) it appears to be us that are the narrow minded ones.

I certainly can understand with the state of today’s music why everyone and their brother wants to get on board with country music and get a piece of the pie. Why you ask? Because country music is the only popular genre that “keeps it real.” The players in this field keep their egos in check (for the most part), stay true to the music and the writing, and, most importantly, stay true to the people who put them where they are and line their pockets. I really don’t think that the true fans will let anyone less than genuine with their motives into this world. I’m sorry, but I don’t believe Jessica Simpson is going to go far in the country world. And Willie’s association with her is really making his stock go down (in my opinion). Can you really see any other female artist in country acting like Jessica? The fake dumb, the ego? It just won’t fly with us. The same with Snoop Dog or whatever moniker he’s going by on any given month of the year. I am all for new twists on things in my beloved and preferred genre of music, but for me to buy it, it must stay at the core of what country music and the artists are trying to sell me. And that is genuine honesty, appreciation for me as a fan, humility, and a song that speaks to me in my everyday life. These pop/rap/whatever people who want to make a go of really need to do some soul searching before trying to come into this world. A true country fan can spot a fake and phony and the eog that goes with it 100 miles away. God Bless country music!

I think that this is just a publicity stunt on Snoop Dog’s part. He is just trying to open other avenues in his career. He is also scheduled to appear on one of my favorite soap operas, One Life To Live, and also rewrite their opening song for the appearances that he will be there. When I heard that, I was totally turned off. It actually made me want to throw up. He also said that he has been watching that show since he was a child. I don’t believe that for a moment. What I do believe, is that he got jealouse of Mary J Blidge who had appeared on the show at least twice, and wanted to compete with her. I am apalled that the producers were too stupid to see that. I agree with most of you. Snoop is a bad influence on anything sacred, and my personal opinion is that the networks should never have taken him seriously.

no, snoop definitely ain’t country, but it’s allright cuz country got room for everybody. i’m not a fan of snoop’s music, but he can cross over with a tune to country music if he wants. it ain’t like he’s changing genres or anything. he’ll always be a rapper. Oh, and TERRY- snoop isn’t trying to be country. he found i song he likes and recorded it…jeez! IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT DON’T LISTEN. have a great day everyone:)

Honestly, I have a great deal of respect for musicians. Anyone that can make it in this buisiness deserves respect. However, artists these days need to stick with their genres. Snoop Dogg and the Eagles are all great artists, just not country artists. Country music is changing, there is no doubt about that. Anymore, though, it seems that country music is receiving all of the retired and others of genres without a hint of country. We need to stay true to our roots. Keep the oldies with the oldies and the rap with the rap. Country stands on its own and we do not need these crossovers. What ever happened to Waylon, Willie, and David Allen Coe?

OK, the beat is great, but one thing I’ve always liked about country is that my kids can listen to most of the songs without me turning the station. I’m all for everyone turning country, but keep it a little more real or play the song after hours that kids would be listening. It would be a great goofing off, drinking song but nothing I would want my kids singing along to. If this song hits the country radio stations during the day, I would be forced to turn them off. Not that this is the only song I have had to sensor, but it’s a bit over the top. It goes back to having any kind of values and wanting our kids to follow them. If Snoop wants to be country, that’s great, but leave the rap, hooker, druggie bit where it belongs and sing country. I love the new upbeat country, but there are limits.

I think it’s more of an insult to the legend Johnny Cash, he was a Christian man and Snoop Dogg has always seemed to be the complete opposite of a Christian… I know I’m not in position to judge but it’s true, I don’t think he should become a Country artist unless he follows the country ways, which usually (classic country/ country gospel) are based on God and the realness of people not to make women look like fools.

I do not think that is country at all. He defintely can rap but it doesn’t belong in country. Country has always been clean cut music.Look at our country artist, Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, George Strait, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Brad Paisley just to name a few. And to Liz, clean out your ears, “She’s A Hottie” is Hot just like Toby Keith is HOT HOT HOT

What a lot of you “youngsters” don’t know is that country is a long way from what used to be country. It used to be called “Country AND Western” music. Then it became more “hip” with new stars like rock & rollers like Conway Twitty, Waylon Jennings (see Buddy Holly), hell rasiers like Hank Williams Jr., reb’s like David Allen Cole, Johnny Paycheck and ‘Oh my goodness’ a BLACK MAN by the name of Charlie Pride!!!! Now I don’t like Snoop Dog or his music. But I would rather have him recording this type of music rather than the other. To me there is two kinds of music, good and bad. In the end, like it or not country will change some for the better some for the worse. If you don’t like DONT BUY IT. By the way wasn’t Johnny Cash’s last song, Hurt, a Nine Inch Nails song?

now we play a lot of country and would like to remind you that country music is about real life. a lot of you mentioned country music is waylon, hank, cash, charlie pride, merle, twitty, kristofferson, willie and etc. now when they started out they were all playing the devils music and most of them not only played country but rock ‘n’ roll. all of the before mentioned artists have influenced all times of groups and artists from many genres. cmt recently had a show i believe was called top 100 redneck moments in which a rapper stated that the two best rap songs he every heard were C.W. McCall’s “Convoy” and Cash’s “Ring of Fire”. when the Eagles started the played rock and had a couple of songs that could be classified country. and not one person has mentioned bon jovi not being country. but guess what he has a country album out. what we are saying is just because you started in one genre when you were young and dumb does not mean that that you will be forever and always in that genre. a good example is kid rock started out as a rapper then did a couple country songs and is now doing rock. another example is tim mcgraw and nelly and their duet “over and over” now a lot of you said that country music is what it used to be and thats the point stay popular music has to evolve. so lets give snoop dog a chance and see what happens. if it works we have one more country artist and if it doesnt then snoop goes beck to rapping. no big deal.

I listen to the song by Snoop and must say that I like the music but I do not like rap music. It doesn’t matter if it is country rap or hip hop rap I just don’t like it. I have always been a fan of Johnny Cash since I was a little girl and the song to me is not meant to be a country song but it lets people know that he enjoys country music and I hope that it will evenutally have a positive influence on him. As far as people discussing what is real country music and were not around when Johnny, Willie and Hank Williams Jr. first started they were not considered to be real country and they were blackballed for a long time and considered to be rebels and trouble makers and Hank was a big drinker and sometimes would miss shows. I had friends that went to see him and their money had to be refunded because he was to drunk to take the stage. Johnny also did drugs and was addicted to alcohol and Willie Nelson to this day still smokes weed so for those of you who hate on Snoop for his drugs need to remember that Johnny had his demons as well as Hank Willimas Jr. and that Willie and Snoop have something in common right now to day besides their love for country music which is their love for weed. Now the thing is this how can you admire Willie but condem Snoop when they both have the same addiction. If Johnny, Willie, and Hank Williams Jr. did not destroy country music then neither will Snoop.

I think what snoop is trying to do is, well, a little off the wall. That being said, it could also be good for country music in that it may bring more fans over to listen to country music that would have never listened to it otherwise. I used to listen to Rap and R&B when I was younger, but as I aged so did my taste in music. I was brought over to country music by the likes of Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, and many more. I know snoop will never be accepted into country music totally, but you gotta give him credit for trying.

It’s just good, down home music. CMT has gone too far lately. Snoop Dog is really pushing it. We don’t care that he says he’s “being real”. Personally, who am I to judge! But, I would be more likely to buy Snoop’s older stuff for when I’m working out, than buy this for chillin!
And if Snoop was so influenced by the MAN IN BLACK, he’s not doing him much justice with “Buy my medicine!”
Snoop, hang with some of Country’s outlaws, then go write a song from the heart! (PS John Rich is not a country outlaw!) Gone Country was a JOKE! Would have rather seen Bobby Brown win! At least he had heart!!!

Oh my gosh!! I am embarrased this is even allowed on “Country Music” Television!!
What happened to traditional country. They need to make a whole new category in the record aisle for Crossover or Urban Country or Country Pop, whatever you want to call it for songs like this, Big and Rich, Taylor Swift, and all the others who like to kid themselves that they are singing country. Everyone with that “pop sound” sounds the same nowdays, it all sounds alike! Look at the people who last over the years and decades even. Garth Brooks (who strayed away from country too but still had quite a few real country songs) George Strait, Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire (who is my favorite singer who I was dissapointed when she started sounding pop as well) George Jones, look at all these people who have been around forever and listen to how they sound, pure country. The people who have the pop sound come and go so fast.
If my dad hears this on country radio (which is the only thing he listens to) it would give him a heart attack!!
This is just terrible. It’s like I am looking at a joke on You Tube or something! I want to see what country singers he gets to sing it with him!!

“And everyone talks about the lyricsof other country songs, but none are as bad as this, prostitution and drugs”

What about Merle Haggard’s “Living With The Shade Pulled Down,” about a man who marries a prostitute, and encourages her to keep up her business even after they fall in love.

There is also Reba’s song “Fancy.”

Neither song is exactly “anti-prostitution;” in fact, both songs portray prostitution as a reasonable choice, given the circumstances.

And Neither song is by a fringe performer. Both Reba and Merle are country icons.

I can’t think of any country song that mixes both prostitution and drugs off the top of my head, but I bet one exists.

    There

Whoa! That’s awful! I couldn’t stand even 15 seconds of it!
I’m what you’d call a modern country lover. Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Sugarland, Little Big Town, Brad Paisley and many others. Some may not call it real country but it’s certainly in the realm. Snoop Dogg isn’t even within the galaxy. I echo what another blogger said about “Save a horse, Ride a Cowboy” by Big and Rich - I can’t stand that type of “country”! The latest “Cotton-eyed Joe” is rediculous. Even some of Brad Paisley’s more recent music like “Online” is very clever and fun but I tire of it quickly. Many of the enduring classics from people like Marty Robbins, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash are great! Let’s face it, some currently respected country artists shouldn’t branch out with a modern take on things for very long. As for Snoop Dogg? Just stay out of the country!

I have listened to country(both old and new) for many years now. I listen to southern rock and classic rock too.
My main passion is country over any other kind of music. In the last ten years the music industry will do anything to make a buck and sign whoever fits the mold. Its do to corporate america taking over and ruining everything. A lot of music stations play the same song over and over again and seriously it gets annoying. The music stations and the music channels decide what we should hear and what to watch. If anyone wants to argue the fact that the music industry is letting anyone into country…do me a favor and dont buy, download or listen to anything that isn’t country. I say country and the ones who know good country music will know what I’m talking about. If you honestly think about the music buisness and where its headed then your right…It’s going straight down the drain. I’m not here to argue or yell at anyone, I am only saying these things to reeducate people and let people know only we can make and break musical artists..because we are the ones who buy the albums and go to the concerts. If they suck I dont buy or go and you should too. Country music is what I would die for and give my soul to be given a chance to do because I would keep it true just like George Strait, Alan Jackson,Merle Haggard and the list goes on and on. If you have a friend and they try to play some crap music please get them help…..Educate them on good music so they wont be brain washed anymore.

Country music has been replaced by watered down pop, with the likes of Nasal Flatts, Yes, Kenny Chesney, even Tim McGraw. You go back and listen to real country music, Johnny Cash, some of the old stuff and I dare you to come back and call this country.
No it’s not country, but this is the good old USA, and I will fight for his right to sing it if that’s what he wants and being a true country fan, I have enough heart to say “Go for it if it’s what you want”…….

you’re right. country music isn’t the same anymore. hip hop and pop are constantly moving to nashville and taking over what used to be good music, but snoop dogg sounds more country than a lot of these retards on country radio. you need to give him his credit. he comes from a genre that very seldom listens to or likes country, and then goes and makes a country music song. plus, johnny cash always sang about drinkin and gettin in fights and shootin some guy just to watch him die, and snoops song follows that lifestyle pretty damn well. keep on goin snoop.

I mean, We wont be seeing him doing shows at the grand ole opry, but coming from Rap… coming form a genre of music that has lost its true identity (I mean, seriously, old school rap was good because the spoke of real issues and gave a glimpse into something that most mainstream, White America had no idea about) Its refreshing to see an artist who is reaching out and doing something different! Good for him! Why doesnt people just embrace an artist trying to strike out on something different, its nice to know Snoop can do more than just rhyme and cuss.

I did not care for snoop dogs music. Don’t like rap, never have, never will. I like a lot of the new country artists, Keith Urban, Jason Michael Carroll, Jewell, The Lost Trailers. I am a George Strait, Conway, Loretta and Keith Whitley. Some of the new stuff, the music is so loud you can’t hear the words.

Snoop can sing what ever he wants we should accept his new style of sound.Johnny Cash loved anyone who looked at his music with love enough to inspire. As far as ya’ll so called country fans,if you were true country you would know too the eagles played a part of country music too in the 70’s-80’s with Desparado, your lying eyes, peaceful easy feeling.I remember hearing them first on country radio too.The Eagles too had songs on the country music chat and end enough that Country singers did a Tribute CD to the Eagles.Tim McGraw was embraced to do a rap/country song called “Over&Over” which I might add i love.Get out of the old racist way of viewing country and see we can sing&do anything we want if we feel it in our hearts.I love Country&a little of everything.Wonderful try for Snoop Dog.Glad he saw our music and came out and honored it and Johnny Cash.

Ok, y’all need to calm down…it’s not like he’s saying it was country — just it was influenced by one the country greats…Snoop also never said he knew all about country music. Country is turning into hip-hop anyway so why not let the “pimp king” come and play. Trace might do some country songs, but “Honky-Tonk…” that was crap and the video was nothing short of a video on BET or MTV (nothing new for CMT). It had more of a country/deep south sound than “Over and Over”…back in 1999-2000 Snoop said in an MTV interview that he thinks country should be more recognized than it is…he did say it should be main streamed like some of the crap we hear on the radio today, but he likes country. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover…he had a hard youth, he made mistakes, he is the hip-hop version of Willy Nelson (when it comes to weed), he’s one of the best lyricists in hip-hop today, and stays true to himself - unlike some of our current “country greats” (sarcastically speaking). Considering the crap that country radio and cmt plays - this is about par. Not a huge fan of the song, but got to give him credit for putting himself out there to a very unforgiving crowd - country is a very elitist crowd, which surprises me that it would be allowed to have pop played or heard on radio/tv geared for country. Remember the music we see and hear is only what is the hot seller at he moment so someone it buying this pop music that is being labeled as country. If you don’t wanna hear it ban radio and watching CMT. That is the only way to get the want of true country fans to be heard!

Many of yall are sayin his sing is immorral and this is true but so was J.C.’s “Cocain Blues” and several of his other songs. I also no that this song (other than makin his wife a prostitute) is how Cash lived. Through much of Cash’s life all he wanted to do was get drunk and do drugs but we were all his fans anyway. Am i right? YES!!! I’m not particularly a Snoop Dogg fan either but I think we should let the man do what he wants to do. For all you Dogg haters, I wish him the best of luck.

I am very sorry to see and read what I have read by people that call themself old fashion southerners. I love country music and have been listing to it all my 36yrs. I also recall growing up and trying new things like rock and heavy metal but no buddy damed me for it. I think that we all have alot of closed minds and show our ingnorance especailly if we are true to ourselves, country music and what we believe in. As a parent of two teenager one who is very musicly talented. I would have to say that we not only have to be opened and allow people to folow their dreams but, remember that you were taught that you can do anything you put your mind to. Just like snoop! He may have gotten his break in rap but that does not make him a bad person. I think that if he fails that is something he has to deal with. I love all country from Patsy Cline to Carrie Underwood. As the younger artists today sing songs that they can relate to so does snoop and if you can not relate to his music then you have not experinaced the things that he has in life. But the name calling and racist comments are out of control and we have to take a step back and say maybe those people are not who they think they are! When Tim Mcgraw first came out everyone said he was trying to discrase the Indain population with Indain outlaw. But the truth is that was is song that helped him get his break and it was for him to do. So open your mind. And remember if you can say that snoop doesn’t belong then remember when your child says he or she wants to grow up and be just like you. Because you are the ones teaching our next generation. Southerners or Northerners whereever your from think about that!!!!

Alot of singers (from different music backgrounds) record different styles of music. Remember when Elvis and Johnny Cash started out they weren’t accepted for their styles of music. Snoop’s just tipping his hat to our style of music. Remember the traditional style of country music songs always had something to do with a drunk, cheater or drug user. Snoops just updating the times a little. Don’t knock another music style. As Ray Charles said: Good music has no category. Thanks!!!

We will accept songs about drinking, cheating, and even some immoral acts, but what we won’t accept is a song about sending your woman out to earn money so you can buy dope. If he wants to go back to the drawing board and try another song, I will give it a try, but I will change the station anytime this song comes on, and I am dissapointed that CMT thinks this is country music, I thought they had higher standards that that.

Alot of these opinions I agree and disagree with. First of all, In defense of The Eagles. I am a HUGE Eagles fan, and I DO realize that the “title” that was given to them years ago was “Rock”, BUT have you heard the first 3 Albums (cd’s)? They had more banjo and steel guitar on their recordings than 95% of the “Country” acts did at that time (in the 70’s). The Eagles play a variety of styles and country seems to be one that they have done for years, not just something they decided to do to cash in on. Don Henley has recorded a few country songs on his solo cds through the years. It’s not the artists (most of the time), it’s the labels, management, etc. So are some of you saying that ALABAMA was not a Country Band? There are too many “titles” in music. Artists have a right to express themselves how they feel. I do agree that Snoop Dog will never be welcomed in Country Music, but at least he is promoting Country Music by saying he loves it. I don’t care for his song at all, but I respect him ALOT by telling people that Country is cool, and admitting to liking Johnny Cash, instead of some newer srtist that alot of us do not consider “really country”. Let’s just enjoy the music and forget the titles that we put on everything. If it’s good, Great, if not, turn it off! But the Eagles not being “Country”? Sounds like some of us need to do our homework, and go back and listen. The DESPERADO cd was borderline Bluegrass/Country with MAYBE, just MAYBE a touch of rock?

What ever happened to country music anyway!!!!!!!!? Waylon, Willie, and Hank J.R.& S.R. are way, by far better. If this is country music, i would think that country music has died. MAN, THAT IS SUCH A STUPID SONG! and if you don’t agree, you are no REAL COUNTRY MUSIC fan. i don’t even see what Johnny Cash has to do with this song. I would put a lot more on these couple of comments, but i would be typing all night. BELIEVE ME, i could keep this up for a long time. One thing about country music we don’t care about money we care about the stuff that matters. you don’t see country artists goung out and making a stupid song about money and medicine like this idiotic fool is doing except in his case it would be a rap artist wait a minuite correction, a stupid idiotic city-person yankee going out and making an idiotic city-yankee song about money and drugs. you notice in his video there is only rap fans he needs to go sing that song in nashville and see how bad that song really is , that is if anybody would stay there after that idiot walked in the door. O and you people need to stop trashing the Eagles they are awesome they might have used to be rock but now they sound like country listen to how long and busy being fabulous plus the older rock just sounds like modern country. now i’m not taking snoop dogs side i am kind of making my own side yall need to use somebody besides the Eagles for your examples. i dont hear anybody talking about Elvis or Jerry Lee Lewis like this 0 and dont start using them for your sick examples either i bet snoop dog dont even know what he is doing he is so stupid and he did not get this song from Johnny Cash either man if he was here right now i wouldnt even take the time to explain all this i would ask a couple of questions like what the heck were you thinking!!!!!!????? and then he would be runnin from me and my 8 guage. man you people need to take my side i’m not trying to make you change your mind about anything this is just my opinion yall just think about this. i agree with telder except he sholdnt be promoting country we can do that! if he keeps doing that country really will be dead because all the other rappers will be trying to do what he did!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been hearing about Snoop wanting to do contry for a while now; this is hardly anything new. True, Country is a difficult genre to break into and the fanbase is quite loyal to it and anyone trying to break in is look upon as suspect. But, it’s odd to see so many people against someone like Snoop trying to go into Country.

    1) Snoop’s family is from the south but migrated to Cali c/o his uncle. They lsitened to Soul,Blues and Country

    2) Rock and Roll is an amalgamation of Country,Blues and Jazz and rap is an amagamation of Rock,Blues,Funk,Country,Folk and some Reggae.

    3) Although I hate to admit this, the “Talking Blues” style in country is kind of like a prototype to rap. David Allen Coe’s song about Linda Lovelace and Johnny Cash’s A Boy Named Sue are great examples of “rapping” in country.

    4) Snoop Dogg has had vulgar lyrics, but Country didn’t start getting that family friendly until artists like Garth Brooks became popular. I guess everyone forgets about the Outlaw Country movement and there artists like David Allen Coe. David has admitted he was a fan of Ice-T and used vulgar lyrics on Nothing Sacred. Willie Nelson is known to smoke weed and Johnny Cash had some songs that were kind of brutal for there time.

    5) The Artists that I do know and consider me a brother listen to all types music so Snoop was probably a fan of country and this is the opportunity for him to do something. He actually exposed alot of people to Metallica when he was in high school.

I’m not biased at all for Snoop, but as a musician/songwriter, I feel it’s my duty to defend all music and there performers, no matter the genre.

Is this country? Not as most of us know country music to sound like. It has changed from 10 years ago, just as everything, and everyone does. Rap in my opinion is an art, just like any other music. I’ve heard some pretty neat mixes. Rap songs are not created over night, it takes hours and hours of production work to get the sound they produce. Just like country, rock, pop, and any other genre. New genres are created when cultures and sytles mix, look at rock for example. You have, Hard rock, alternative rock, Metal, Rock n’ Roll, Southern Rock, many others. Country has its’ genres as well. Just think of all the artists throughout their careers who have tried new/different styles to get new listeners or just to see how it sold. This may be Snoop Doggs idea.

Snoop Dogg ain’t stupid, he’s had great success in the music industry. That’s the reason he is still around.

Only thing I can say bad about this song, are the lyrics.

If people like it, then this new style of rap/country mix will stick around, if not, then it’ll pass and people will forget about it next week.

If you look at the history of both they end up being very close to the same. If it weren’t for someone just trying to be different there wouldn’t be anything for people to argue about. I listen to all types of music and it seems to all derive from Rock and Roll. And you know people had something to say about that when it came out. As a black person, born in the 60’s, I’ve seen many examples of racism. And I’ve taught my children to beware of hidden biases. To not live in fear but not be blinded either. My children now looks at Osbama as proof that America has changed and that they live in a better safer world. But, these comments ver something so minor, as a song, Influenced By Johnny Cash. Well this shows our Faces, our Beliefs, our Souls. The hidden soul of America. The hatred thrown out over the Internet about a song, people. I will show this to my children and grandkids. We will have a lesson, we will learn as we always have learned. I will teach as I have been taught, that what you see isn’t America it’s what you feel and think. And I will pray with them, that one day it won’t be so,so many out there with that poison in their hearts. Because, that stuff is poison. It has killed many; people, countries, cultures, and spirits. Well I’m not going to say that he can’t but there is still a bit of a rap type sound to it and the story it tells is well I don’t have to say but it is a start and if he wants it bad enough of course he can go country it doesn’t matter where you’re from. Justin Timberlake is from Tennessee and it didn’t stop him from going pop and he does a great job at it. I heard a remark about Taylor Swift and you are entitled to your opinion but I think she is awesome and a bit crazy.lol. Just kidding Taylor your not crazy but you are awesome. Anyway she’ll probably never read this so I guess I could have excluded that part bu I’m not backspacing so it can stay. Back on track Snoop can go country but I’d change some lyrics Whitey Ford writes and records good stuff so I’m sure he can write another song for Snoop that relates more to the country genre. Johnny Cash is a good guy to base things on. Okay I’m done now. Later.

I agree with people who do not like “country” nowadays. I listen to my Dad’s old CDs and say, now that’s country music. Johnny Cash, Hank Snow, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, all them, their old music just happens to be real country, not in the name of Johnny Cash is snoop dog and Rascal Flatt’s gang. People need to reconize “country” is not somebody cheating on other person, revenge, and all that. Snoop Dog, go back to the hood, and LEAVE COUNTRY MUSIC ALONE! Music people, watch the music and the language, too. I remember a time were I could never hear a single bad word. Amen.

For One im gunna say that it is just weired to know that he is trying to write a country song in the first place.Second of all wat in the heaven sake is this song about? Third of all the song it would just fit weired in the country styl because of the fact that it is just way to up beat for country. Country is more a smooth relaxing type of music, but the song and the way he made the song sound was just way to up beat for country i dont know wat it is about the beat it just would fit into the country background. Wat they would call the bling nah that wouldnt go with the Country style either. but i mean if it wasnt so up beat then i would say ok. But tell me this wat is this song about.Well N-e ways thats my oppinion sorry if you dont like it but im an honest person.

I have learned so much from the 200 plus posts on this blog. I watch Snoop Dog’s Fatherhood show and think he has his family heart going in the right direction. I don’t buy his music and some of his music is OK w/me. I think country music fans and country music business still has that big question to sort out about what is Country Music? I’m getting the vibe that country is what each person or individual hears it to be. Some of the newer female artists I keep hearing sounds of Alanis Morrisette w/out the cuss words and some new artists I hear sounds of Tammy Wynette. I didn’t like Snoop’s ‘My Medicine’ because I hear it and feel it ‘trashy’. I don’t want to be close to it. That’s just me. I tell you what this whole thing about Snoop w/a country music song has created a lot of ‘buzz’ right here. I am really thankful to read this broad cross section of opinions. Hey CMT, you got a board where we can fight out the question of “What is Country Music”?

Until yesterday Snoop dog only was a name my kids mention from time to time. Now I’ve seen him, in the ‘Melkweg’ Amsterdam, doing a duet with country-legend Willie Nelson. And in spite of what Snoop Dog or country-fans may think: it was real country man! He did it! That’s what I often love on musicians…breaking boundaries and do what they like. Look at the Willie Nelson website….Snoop dog seems to be a real country fan, doing the complete lyrics of two of Willies songs backstage!

Wow, there’s a lot of animosity here. Hey, guys! Country today doesn’t sound the same as Country in the 90’s or 80’s or 70’s, etc. It grows and evolves. I think that’s kinda cool.

Now, the lyrics of this song are a joke, and I think Snoop Dogg’s in on the joke, but the rhythm’s right out of early Johnny Cash. I heard a lot of old time Memphis Blues in that. And I love the fact that some R&B/rappers are returning to instruments in their music. I’m so tired of loop tracks and riffing off of somebody else’s music sample that you hear in rap.

My hat goes off to Snoop Dogg. It was a step in the right direction. Even if it’s not mainstream Country I think it was pretty interesting. Now, if only he’d stop sounding like a misogynist pig. Snoop, honey, I’d like to talk to you about your lyrics. I think there’s room for improvement. LOL

This is about as country as that rapping Troy fella who John Rich actually got involved with. Don’t let me get started on JR (gone country screw up). Now where I agree this song has nothing to do with country - I do agree that country music is moving in the right direction. While I don’t care for Taylor’s music - it’s only because I’m not 10 years old. I would never buy her album, but she is the future in country music. So is Carrie Underwood. They are keeping it alive. If you wish they would bring back “old” country, you’re asking for it to eventually die. It needs to grow. That is just realistic. Thinking it should always stay the same is unrealistic.

  • Patti says:

    Posted: May 11th, 2008 at 2:34 pm

PS. When I say the future of country - I’m not talking about the rapping, the Eagles, Bon Jovi or Snoop dog. They are not country - period. Mainly old hasbands who are trying to reactivate their fame through country music.

Johnny Cash did not limit his music interest. Johnny Cash spent his entire music career crossing boundries that others were not brave enough to cross. Johnny Cash opened doors for all of us to actually enjoy all types of music. The Johnny Cash show brought us musical talent beyond country; it is because of Johnny Cash we can cross boundries in the musical industry. Here’s to the Man in Black. Snoop Dogg you’re the man!

I find it very hard to believe that Johnny Cash would rap his mind around a song involving drugs, hookers and pimps. Seeing how none of those topics were in his songs. Snoop isn’t the man. He’s just someone trying to get in on country because it’s becoming hot with today’s kids.

He needs to stick with what he knows…

To all you liberal hippies who think we should embrace a gang-banging/thug/criminal/murderer into the world of country music: You make me sick. I am so disgusted that the CMA, which I will never watch again, would allow such a degenerate on their show. If everyone would be true to the music and let the rappers be rappers and the country artists be country, then we would all be much better off. These ‘old-timers’ (willie nelson, david allen coe, hank jr.) are trying to boost their own images with the younger generation by embracing today’s losers. Enjoy having had a great music career and respsect the decent songs you wrote without inviting this trash in to ruin your image and music. I’m really going to have to find a new genre of music with REAL people who don’t sell out to commercialism and the hippies who have desecrated the moral fabric of America.

  • Bri’anna Joy says:

    Posted: May 24th, 2008 at 12:22 am

Hey, Bo. Am I a hippie because I thought the song was interesting? I didn’t like it much, but thought it was interesting. Like I said, a step in the right direction. Just not quite there yet.

I think he relates with Johnny Cash *because* Cash had a checkered past. Maybe Cash seems more real to Snoop Dogg because of that. Cash sang about murder. He sang about crime. Even leaving Cash aside for the moment, Country is filled with songs celebrating adultery, misogyny, and crime. Is Trace Adkins’ “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” a great example of Country? I see it just as offensive as any rap video with girls shaking their things as if that’s all they’ve got to offer men.

Anyway, I’m sorry for you that you feel you have to leave country because Snoop Dogg was on CMA.

You folks need to get a grip. Country music has been singing about cheating, whoring, drugging, drinking and other reprehensible behavior for years. You don’t realize that country music has been hijacked by scumbags, years ago, that aren’t much different in terms of morality than rap groups (maybe a bit less violent is all).

I’ve stupidly done some of the above things, but I don’t glorify it. THE PEOPLE THAT DO THOSE THINGS AS A LIFESTYLE CHOICE ARE THE SCUM OF THE EARTH. I realize that most people these days are like that, but they are no less trash. How about a movement to boycott all trashy country music songs so they’ll clean up their act. Porn stars will be up there next.

Remember that song “Strawberry Wine” by Dena Carter? Do you really want your daughters being influenced by that trash? Can we get some dignity back here?

I actually rather enjoy Snoop’s new video. Is it traditional country? Heck no, but he’s pushing the envelope, and as far as I’m concerned, more power to him. I’m sure this has already been mentioned (couldn’t sit here long enough to read every post), but Johnny Cash’s last video was a Nine Inch Nails song “Hurt”; plus, he did another, “Rusty Cage” by Soundgarden. Trent Reznor and Chris Cornell were honored that he was doing their music. A few years back Tim McGraw was asked to sing on one of Nelly’s songs, and I don’t remember all the fuss being made about that. Lighten up, my goodness.

I listen to some country and don’t like Rap music myself, but to say that this song is “awful” and not fit to be country because of the subject…is ridiculous and so hypocritical. Many country songs are about drinking and drugs and belittle women…they are just said to a melody. If all of the “true country” fans think about why you are so much better than everyone else, you are wrong. We live in the United States of America and this is Independence Day weekend….but reading some of these responses would make someone think they were in Nazi Germany…very very scary. It is a song people…and this is America. I’m sure that Snoop isn’t going to ruin Country music….

He is doing something that is breaking the rules and probably putting his own rep in the rap world at risk because he is following his gut feeling. Snoop is an outlaw, just like johnny. What does country music currently have to lose? Country is whatever you say it is.

Just because you call yourself cowboy and wear a cowboy hat don’t make you country. I have a big problem with where todays country music has gone. Rascall Flatts Pop, along with a lot of other new artists. I want to hear Snoop Dog sing i’ll tune into one of his stations that play R&B or rap. I don’t expect to see that on a country station. If you think “rap [...] is just for people with no talent” you try and come up with something. Since it requires “no talent,” it should be a breeze for you. I personally don’t like rap, but it takes talent. Whether or not you like, it you have to recognize it cuz YOU can’t do it.

Some of you seem to miss the big picture, whenever a singer/musician sees a fall in their sales, they ASSUME, that country will give the a boost in publicty, and there is no such thing as “bad publicity”, but I don’t see Snoop as country, but “pat james” , I think Snoop is following the money not his heart, in his world of rap, he’s been around for a long time, and I’m sure he feels the same way about some of the new rap/r&b singers as we do about some of the new faces we see in country (Taylor Swift, who sounds like two cats fighting live, or all these guys with their hippie/punk hair, whatever that style is), And as for “Being America, Land of the Free”, what about the Dixie chics, that spoke their mind and all you country fans turned your back on them for having an opinion !! I don’t choose to listen to rap because thats my personel prefrence, but this world revolves around money unfortunately, and not our opinion of what should be played on CMT

    Hello friends,

I must admit that I expected something different from this song when it was announced at the awards. I thought he was going to go a bit more out of his element and make a country song, not just rap to a country instrumental. Now with that said, Snoop Dogg is an icon in the music world and has earned the right to call himself the best in his genre. He may well just be a fan of country music and wanted to cross his two loves as to make one great track. I will not say that this is going to be on any top lists as far as country, but it’s certainly a great show of expression. I can’t speak for the man in black, but if nothing else he himself seemed like a man who expressed himself…and didn’t give a shit if you didn’t like it.

How one sided to pass judgement on one man’s country inspired song? I’m sorry but I don’t hear the rap community commenting on “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” because to me that sounded like rap to me. I like all music and some people can inspire other sounds, Johnny Cash just happened to inspired Snoop Dogg’s sound for ONE SONG! Not a whole album. So if you don’t like you don’t have to listen to it. Personally I like it, as a fan of all music blending sounds is a beautiful thing. Not to mention its refreshing to hear him make a song with out profanity.

there’s a funny thing that a similar thing was said about Chuck Berry and he was one of the main figures who began rock and roll by fusing the different types of music. who knows Snoop may be onto something new the kids may latch onto. but if one is predjudiced by preconceptions they’ll miss it.

There are real similarities between Country and Rap so it’s not surprising that Snoop Dogg would make this crossover. Just look at performers like Kid Rock. It’s been reported that the great steel guitarist, Don Helms, played with Snoop, and that Snoop is close friends with Willie Nelson. So let them put some twang in hip hop.

Snoop Dogg thinks Cash is the MAN. So do I. We all have our own interpetation of who Cash was and what he was about. Its unfair to say JC would “turn over in his grave” that Snoop dedicated this song him. Honestly I think he would have disagreed with the message but respected Snoop for stepping outside his confort zone and following his heart. Snoop’s NOT going country!! He’s just honoring Cash and country music in general. I’d rather listen to snoop sing country than RASCAL FLATTS

I must say this whole idea of country music being “wholesome” and “clean” is complete nonsense. While its generally not as vulgar as other genres, country music glamourizes : adultery, drunkeness, violence and fornication among other ungodly acts. So if your gonna say that country music is about God and family values i’d suggest you actually read that bible before you thump it at other genres and their fans.

Who’s to say whats “real country”. I hate Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban and alot of the cookie cutter acts out there today. I listen to Cash, Waylon, Merle and a few newer artist like Gary Allan , Little Big Town and others. Why, because its “real country” ??? No because I personally like their music . Thats whats its about, we all as indiviuals like who we like and hate who we hate. My point is why get bent outta shape because someone you dont like is making music and calling it country. Dont buy their music and dont listen to it. There’s plenty of great music out there for everyones taste

first let me say that everyone is entitled to thier own opinion, but i will seriously boycot CMT, seriously have the channel blocked from being able to be watched in my home if they think for one second that i will aceept with open arms this whole snoop dogg thing, really what did he do get high and think wow i should do a country song, i think so many people are turning to country when thier careers in other genres are failing, i will not rescue his falling career.

I can not believe that he was even allowed on CMT. I think we someone somewhere should start a petition about this. Snoop Dogg is not nor never will be COUNTRY!!!

Hey I just want to congradulate Snoop Dog on his new endeavour into country music. Back in the day country music was not considered “respectable” music, heck even rock and roll was considered more respectable (how many big rock and gangsta rap acts went out of their way to perform in prisons). Mostly this was because country music that was not big band inspired drew heavily from blues and was about living life as the bottom man on the totem pole. Country has many roots; some blues, some gospel, some big band influence, and some rock in roll. I think what makes country music more appealing now than before is that country music is not about fitting into a label or appealing to a stereotype. Its about singing what you feel. Rap used to portray the urban experience but its honesty got lost in its own bling. While rock became the same big money marketing institution it used to rail against. I hope artists like Snoop Dog, Whitey Ford, Chris Rock, and Darius Rucker keep on contributing to the country music tradition by honestly expressing their experiences through their music.

In my humble opinion, when I turn on my country music station I would like to here good country music, when I turn on a pop station I would like to hear pop music and so on an so forth. Unfortunatly when I turn on my country station all I hear is pop music by Taylor swift, and many other so called country musicians. So, do I want to hear pop when I turn on the radio? Depends on the station i want to listen to. what happened to being able to listen to true country music when I want to listen to it, guess i will have to get a sattelite radio.
