My Weirdest Moment at the CMT Music Awards

Taylor Swift at CMT Music Awards

Rhapsody

Here's my weirdest moment from the 2008 CMT Music Awards last night. I was sitting among all the reporters in the press room, when Jewel and Tom Arnold came back for photos. Somebody asked them about the election, and since I don't care who celebrities endorse for president, my eyes wandered off to the television, and Paula Abdul's on there, rattling on about something. All this is going on at Belmont University? This sort of thing never happened when I was an undergrad there in the 1990s. My big dream back then was to be a reporter on the country music beat, and now I am doing just that - with Jewel, Tom Arnold and Paula Abdul.

Anyway, the reporters are always grateful to anyone who comes back to visit with us. (Thanks, Taylor Swift! TTYL!) In case you missed the show, here are the big winners.

"Our Song," Taylor Swift
(Video of the Year, Female Video of the Year)

"Stay," Sugarland
(Duo Video of the Year)

"I Got My Game On," Trace Adkins
(Male Video of the Year, Supporting Character of the Year, Director of the Year)

"Gone Gone Gone," Robert Plant and Alison Krauss
(Wide Open Country Video of the Year)

"Til We Ain't Strangers Anymore," Bon Jovi and LeAnn Rimes
(Collaborative Video of the Year)

"I Wonder," Kellie Pickler
(Performance of the Year, Tearjerker Video of the Year, USA Weekend Breakthrough Video of the Year)

"Online," Brad Paisley
(Comedy Video of the Year)

"Take Me There," Rascal Flatts
(Group Video of the Year)

Taylor Swift-Our song, video of the year. I think that that title is ridiculous to give to her. Not to dis her I like her music, love Our Song, and impressed that she did this at this age. But come on the title is VIDEO of the Year, not song. That video has basically nothing to do with the song. It is just her starting out talking on the phone then the rest of the song is here in random back rounds and dresses. Look at Online by: Brad Paisley, the whole video has something to do with the song and the fans are involved in it. Or you can look at Kenny Chesney’s song, that also has a lot to do with the song. But NOT Our Song. Good song, good singer, and what I consider to be a bad video. And to people that had and have something to do with the award ceremony, I like that you have the fans vote for the winners but for the biggest award you should have some judges or something. And for all I care you can give them the stat that she was voted most by the fans, but that should not be the deciding factor.

I was saying the very same thing last night! Those lucky whipper-snappers! :)

Taylor Swift? A year ago we’d never heard of her. Now she wins over true star-quality performers. Has she even graduated high school yet? GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! IT’S NOT EVEN COUNTRY MUSIC-IT’S POP OR LIGHT ROCK! GET REAL!!!! How much did mommy & daddy pay for her career?

when did Kenny become one of the overlooked at the awards. Like Trace Atkins generally is.
All the really great stuff got NADA in my opinion. I do like Taylor, but that was a bit much.

I couldn’t agree more! Don’t get me wrong…I think Taylor Swift is amazingly talented, given her age, and I’m happy for her success. BUT….enough already!! You’d think she was the greatest thing since sliced bread, the way she keeps winning all these awards. Meanwhile, the truly deserving artists, those who have gotten to the top (i.e. Kenny, Trace, Tim, Alan, etc) through hard work and sheer dedication to their craft (versus Myspace and Facebook) are overlooked time and time again. I truly don’t begrudge Taylor her success, but give it a rest already…make her go out and earn it the hard way!

Well said Leisa. I am not even watching many award shows anymore because they have seemingly gravitated towards things other than talent. I also think that Taylor is cute and charming, but Best Female anything country does not compute. The thing that makes all my favorites so endearing is the road they had to travel. We have Coal Miner’s Daughter, Walk the Line, and what next?? My Life as Myspace Queen? Again, not trying to insult Taylor Swift, but I feel insulted that a million teenagers are trying to change country music. The thing is, those same million Myspace voters would have voted for her even if her debut had been another genre. They just like HER ! That is a phenomenon, not talent ! She is making someone very rich and that is what is driving this, not country music talent.

As a life-time Country Music fan, I have grown up with all the greats. Willie, Waylon, Johnny Cash, Reba, George Strait, George Jones, Alan Jackson, Elvis, Toby Keith, Hank JR and Hank SR. Like others have mentioned here. I am just not understanding what is going on with Country Music now, especially awards. It seems something is really amiss when Taylor Swift is called “A Country Singer”. And to give her these awards over the really good Country Singers (Carrie Underwood, Reba, Kellie Pickler, lots more), well, it’s just unbelievable. About the closests she gets to “country” is taking her shoes off. Calling Taylor Swift “Country” is like giving Alan Jackson or Hank Williams SR awards for being “Opera singers”. Seems awards shows get more disappointing all the time.

    I’m a little late on this one…
but I’m going to Belmont this year (marketing, not music business) and I heard it’s AWFUL during awards shows on campus. Celeberity endorsements, agreed. Who cares.

Taylor Swift is undoubtedly an incredible musician. I can’t wait to watch her performance on the premiere of Nashville Star this Monday (June 9) on NBC at 9/8c!!
