A Thank You Note for Mr. & Mrs. Billy Ray Cyrus

Posted: April 14th, 2008 at 11:58 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Miley Cyrus & Billy Ray CyrusDear Mr. & Mrs. Cyrus,

Just a note to say thanks so much for letting Miley co-host tonight's CMT Music Awards. Because of her, I plan to be firmly planted on my couch this evening. Like the promos have said, I have a feeling that this year will be better than ever. And a lot of that is because of your daughter Destiny Hope. Sorry. I mean Miley Ray.

This is nothing against Jeff Foxworthy. He's a brilliant comic and everything. And was a perfect host for the past few shows. But this year is shaping up to have more cool awards and really hot performers. Even Tim McGraw is performing after quite a few years of missing this event. That could very well be because of Miley. Not just her, but the power she brings with her everywhere she goes. She's absolutely impossible to ignore. So if there was someone who was on the fence about watching tonight's show, Miley will be what persuades them to tune in. And if there was someone who had never even heard of CMT, but loves Miley, I'm guessing they'll watch it, too. Plus, I hear Miley had a big impact on ticket sales. I'm sure the show has sold out in years past, but probably never as quickly as it did this year. Your daughter's probably even had an impact on advertising revenue. If I was selling something to tweens, I'd want to saturate those two hours with my message.

Having two triple-platinum albums by the time she was 15 must mean Miley has a lot of people in her corner. I know she doesn't have a MySpace page where she can brag about the number of streams or the friends she's added. But I've been to two of her concerts, so I've seen what kind of real-world following she has. And now all those people will be turned onto country music because of her. They may love her for her raspy vocals and her girl-next-door attitude. But by the end of tonight's broadcast, I'll bet they love her for the country roots you've blessed her with.

Thanks again for sharing your daughter with us tonight.

Regards,

Alison Bonaguro

Great post. She is a breath of fresh air, and I’m glad my 7-year-old daughter has her to look up to.

    I’ll be watching, too! :)

Hi miley, I love your shows. My friends all love you to. Three boys I know drool over you every time they see a poster of you. They are in seventh grade at Wellston School in michigan. The one that likes you the most is Devin Kunkel Lasly, the second is Nathan Lillie, and the third is Dallas Falls. [they are all really "hot"]

    Billy Ray-
You and your wife have raised a wonderful young lady!! She has a great head on her shoulders and seems to love life and hold it in her hand gently.
I have to tell you she has a wonderful voice on her and as she grows older it is only growning stronger! My daughter is 8 yrs. old and loves her to death! We will be watching tonight together. She wants to sing too and has a set of vocals on her as well for 8 yrs. old. But the music is hard to get noticed too!! BUT
My husband is writing in Nashville now with some guys from there and has some songs you just might like! You may be surprised and like one or two!!!

Just heard Billy Ray & Miley sing at the CMT Awards. OMG - that really sucked! He sounded just plain awful and she was off key. What happened to Miley? Thought she could sing better than that.

I have to agree with JDoe’s comment. Bring back JEFF FOXWORTHY!

If I wanted to watch “Disney” then I would have turned on the Disney channel. Nothing against Miley but, come on folks, she’s a singer that your smaller children look up to. I use to think the the CMT Awards was geared for the mature viewers.

PS - Wish Billy Ray would not sing anymore.

It is a wonderful thing that Miley has such a great dad and connections. Plus, the preteen market. Because she couldn’t carry a tune to save her life.

What an insult for some of greatest country artists of all time to have to endure a few hours of her. More coaching lessons if possible. Her friend Taylor is great on the radio (wonders what a studio can do), but she completely sucks live too.

I hope next year the real talent hosts and wins not this bubble gum, can’t carry a tune youth of today that just got lucky to have family connections and a great marketing strategy.

  • Sara says:

    Posted: April 15th, 2008 at 11:53 am

Agree with Sheri! Keep the bubble gum music out and bring back the real talent. Let the bubble gum group have their own show and leave CMT Awards alone for the real talent.

Billy Ray had one hit to speak of many years ago. But, please, no more singing. You know what they say, if you can’t run with the big dogs then stay off the porch. In other words, Billy Ray - stay off the stage please!

Miley - stick with Disney and the younger group. They are the one’s that love your music.

Gee - did anyone hear how terrible Billy Ray & Miley sang at the Awards last night? What an embarrassment that had to been to all the real talent that was sitting in the audience who could sing WAY BETTER than the two of them.

I enjoyed seeing Miley host the awards last night; I thought she was entertaining. Didn’t see the performance by Miley yet but I heard it was less than entertaining. I’m happy Taylor won the award, it’s great to see the deserving people win awards!

i gotta say as a fan of hawaiian and country music, last nights awards ceremony was ok, the ones who sang and presented awards was great…but as far as the host and hostess, they really suck, miley cant sing, i guess thats why little girls like her, and parents paying there house to see her in concert, give me a break..and then billy, hes no comic, he sings ok…bring back jeff, shit even billy cristal would have done better…this is the CMT the big dog of all music shows..not the mickey mouse/disney show….

i wonder if they would have made it on the new hit, country duet…not…..

I thought Billy Ray and Miley brought a breath of fresh air to the CMT Awards. I love BR’s corny humor and the interaction between him and his daughter. It’s nice to have a change in hosts from time to time and this was totally different and enjoyable. To Robert, Miley’s voice was stretched because she had been sick for several days, strep throat and fever. Give her another chance. She can really belt out a song when she is not ill. I loved the whole show…lots of great talent…

I think Miley and Taylor are both adorable, but I wonder how long they’ll make it without having real pipes. So far, though, they’re doing great. Kellie Pickler is also amazing and has such a refreshing personality. I’m not from their generation, but it seems that young is in right now. I recently ran across a young girl that has the potential to be a huge star in country music and her name is Jordyn Shellhart. Search her name and you’ll come across her myspace page and some youtube videos. Make sure to read her blog about getting signed to a publishing deal in Nashville. Personally, I’m still “old” country, but I also love to see the next generation coming around.

Sorry Miley, but neither you nor your dad can sing ! Talk about “off key” and “pitchy”, American idol judges would have a field day with you both !
Who decided they should host ?
    Please bring back Foxworthy !

I thought Billy Ray did a great job singing but I was totally disappointed with Miley’s performance, in fact, I have a son in college and I usually get all choked up when that song comes on the radio but her voice was nothing like the radio…it was lame and I was so busy shutting it out that I did not even cry.

Chris and others…what part of she was SICK, had strep throat and a fever…don’t you understand? Cut her some slack please! She’s a good kid and a great entertainer and she deserves a break here.

  • Chris says:

    Posted: April 16th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

If she was sick then she probably should have been home! I never said she was not a great kid, just not a singer.

Miley was sick with strep and 103 fever, cut her some slack. Normally she does an amazing job with this song. Perhaps she shouldn’t have been up there but I admire her for keeping her commitment and for not wanting to upset her fans. Most artists would have canceled, I’m proud of Miley for doing the best she could when she was very sick.

Well I loved seeing Billy Ray back where he belongs, with all the other country music celebs. I would like to see him though, without Miley here and there. They don’t always have to be a twosome. I also love the song Ready, Set, Don’t Go when she wasn’t singing it with him. Since its a song about her, she shouldn’t sing it with him. When he sings it alone, it has its soft touch of losing your daughter growing up. It should have stayed that way. Miley was way off key, she is okay when it comes to singing, but she should have stayed home. I think BR is much better than Foxworthy. A lot better. Ratings went up due to BR & Miley being there. I adore BR.. And hope he comes back next year.. If they go by rating, he will be :) But please NO TAYLOR SWIFT.

Billy Ray is trying to make a comeback riding on his daughter’s coat-tails. If she was soooooo sick prior to the CMT Awards, then she should have done the mature thing and chose NOT to sing. Billy Ray THOUGHT he was cute and funny, but…….NOT! He read off of the teleprompter like he was reading a bedtime story to one of his children.

I agree with so many comments that have been submitted. Bring back Foxworthy or think about this - how about Larry the Cable Guy hosting the show. That would have been fun to watch along with the true talented country artists that performed for the CMT Awards. Hum….wonder if anyone from the CMT Awards “planning committee” will read all of the comments that have been made.
