Paul Thorn Should Be on Your Music Player
Paul Thorn is somebody you need to listen to if you haven’t already. This Pentecostal preacher’s kid from Tupelo, Mississippi, has done a bit of everything, as a furniture maker, boxer and journeyman singer-songwriter. His 2002 album, Mission Temple Fireworks Stand, remains a Southern classic. Check out such lines as “I’ll be a human bottle rocket and I’ll go off with a bang,” from the title song, which cleverly tells the saga of a tent doubling for church revivals and fireworks sales.
His new CD, A Long Way From Tupelo, continues his musical gospel. Some people refer to him as the Southern Springsteen. But I prefer to think of him as the “American Paul Thorn.” He writes about people and their ways and their experiences in ways that few are able. Live, Thorn’s gospel upbringing coupled with his urgent R&B bent lends an urgency to his performances. Take a look at his performance of the title song, “A Long Way from Tupelo.”
