When Will Guitar Hero Go Country?

Posted: March 19th, 2008 at 11:12 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Keith UrbanFor the son of a country lover, my 11-year-old knows an awful lot about Foghat. And all things classic rock for that matter. Not because of anything I did, but because of the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock he got for his last birthday. Thanks to this much-heralded Wii game, he is now well-versed in Led Zeppelin, Kiss, Heart, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Weezer and Tenacious D. And that's nice for him. But I keep waiting for the day when the folks at Activision will wake up and see the impact of country music and develop a country Gitar* Hero (*spelled to reflect the proper Southern pronunciation of "guitar.")

Metal and hair band guitarists aren't the only ones who know how to grind an axe. I mean, watch Keith UrbanBrad Paisley and Miranda Lambert go at it. Those are my guitar heroes. Just watch their fingers coast effortlessly up and down the neck. They've got plenty of songs to fill up the Fret Burners and Relentless Riffs categories. The country version might have to change up that wireless guitar though. Maybe make it a Telecaster, and add some picking buttons to the strum board. (The fret buttons help you make the chords, but country guitarists do a fair amount of picking in addition to strumming, so that sound would need to be incorporated in order to beat Lambert at a song like "Gunpowder & Lead," unlocking her as a playable character.)

If I could convince those gaming geeks to make this Legends of Country edition, I'd be laying down the groundwork for future generations to respect these classic country sounds. I want my children's children to one day revere guys like Keith Urban, the way people now revere the sounds of Bill Monroe or Buck Owens. This would be a way of paying tribute to them now, in your own basement, without having to spend an entire day at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Then maybe when kids are doing their homework, you'll hear them humming "Once in a Lifetime" instead of "Slow Ride."

I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s thought of this!! We have every edition of Guitar Hero, PLUS the newer Rock Band, and even my 7 y/o daughter knows “Smoke on the Water”! Not only would a “country rock” edition of GH be a lot of fun, it would also be MUCH easier on mom’s ears! Crankin’ up a little “Somebody Like You” is a lot less irritating than “Welcome to the Jungle”. Plus there might even be more interest in the game by female players, as well. Heavy metal is such “guy” music, but the gals wanna rock, too! Activision, are you listening?!

In response to Feathers, there a plenty of women who listen to Heavy Metal(admittedly not as many that listen to country), but Guitar Hero has a lot of good rock music that isn’t heavy metal at all. My girlfriend (who does not listen to any rock music. at all.) loves the game, and both Guitar Hero and Rock Band have attracted a much higher percentage of female “gamers” than your typical video game.

That being said, I was raised on Country and would LOVE to see a Country Guitar Hero. I was just telling my friends how it would be a fantastic idea.

Only proper that CMT might start the rally call!

im glad nobody has published a country guitar hero game cuz that will ruin the whole image of guitar hero. country is all about fiddles and singing about life in the swamp. this means that solos will be omitted or be overly simplified because country has none. guitar hero has established an image of true rock, for the most part. country doesnt fit in at all with this image.

Just a side note regarding the idea of a Fender Telecaster controller, a company that produces controllers have released a controller for the Wii that is basically a Telecaster.

The company is called Nyko and the guitar is called the Nyko Frontman Wireless (Only the Wii version looks like the Telecaster, as the PS3 version looks more like a Gibson Xplorer).

now, lets not be mean but…
44guy- you are narrow minded and uneducated. have you ever even heard a country song? your post is insulting and factually incorrect.

    and

way to go suggesting this. it really would help correct teenager’s stupid misconceptions of country music. i’m a teenager and i hate it when kids say “i hate country” or when they add “except for carrie underwood’s ‘before he cheats’” if they listened to any other popular country song they would know that it is alot more like ‘before he cheats’ than the misconception of twangy guitars and singing hicks.
people don’t even give country a chance. i think it is important to get young people exposed to it. that’s one reason i admire taylor swift so much. she brings country to a new audience.

Ok i luv the rock music that’s on these guitar hero games!! We have both 2 & 3 and the rock band as well!! I also luv country music and i think that would be awesome to have a country version!! I’m sold on the idea!! As for no solo’s from the guy who doesn’t know what he’s talking about hello?! Have you heard the “Devil went down to georgia” by Charlie Daniels? Solo!! They made a metal version out of it on GH3 and it’s awesome!! Now do that with the country GH and you have it sold!! Let’s get the ball rolling on this thing!!

To A**wipe44, Have you ever heard Keith Urban on his guitar??? I have in person and let me tell you, he can make that thing talk without ever saying a word.In fact, he has 3 guitar solos on 3 seperate albums that are VERY good ,thank you so much. And if you have ever heard or seen Miranda Lambert on her guitar, you would know that she can really rock the house also.I would definately buy this game if nit had a country version.

I also growing up in a small country town, know what you mean by hating it when kids come up and say that they hate country, they dont give it a chance at all, and I think that its a lot better than the rest of the music out there, i mean granite, i still listen to heavy metal and rap, but thats just because i like all types of music, but i think that a country version of guitar hero would probably sell even better than the last four guitar hero’s have. At least when you listen to country music, you can normally completely hear all of the words.

AMEN!!!! My husband received Guitar Hero 3 in January. I love to watch him play, and I do like a majority of the rock music that they have, but shortly after hearing a few songs, I asked the same thing - where’s the country version?!?!? I was very happy that they had “Devil Went Down to Georgia”, but being a huge country fan, I immediately wondered if a country version is something that would ever be made.

Keith Urban is one of the best guitar players in the industry, and he works it in well to so many of his songs. And like others have said, Brad Paisley and Miranda Lambert are awesome on the guitar, too. There would definitely be a lot of great songs that could make up a Country version of Guitar Hero. It would be interesting to see how many sales would be generated if it were created. Since country music albums often top all Billboard charts, even the all-genre types, I bet that a country version of Guitar Hero would make the companies a mint!

I don’t even know who any of the people are you guys are talking about. I am sure there is a market for Guitar hero ‘Country’ but I can’t think of a single reason why I would buy it. Maybe make a GH3 version with country songs and make sure they don’t cut everyone out with GH4 being country.. (I think that would do more harm than good for them)… I know it’s not the same everywhere but country isn’t what the majority listens too where I live, We have 1 country radio station in the entire area and well over a dozen that feature rock/alternative music, I am sure in Nashville it’s the opposite but when it comes to making ‘great money’ selling less copies of software because you took a chance to appease the minority doesn’t seem like a great business idea.

    1. a country guitar hero probably wouldnt sell very well
    2. the songs would be way too easy
    3. the guitar solos (or lack there of)would also be way too easy
    4. CMT wouldnt start a rally call as Console Hero said because MTV owns CMT, and it also owns MTV Games, which publishes an even better music-game title, Rock Band

  • Jenn says:

    Posted: March 24th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

hey rico, have you ever played kieth urban’s music on guitar? i’m guessing not because you say country is easy. that’s a huge overgeneralization!!! not all of it is. i’m guessing there’s alot of country riffs that you couldn’t play, even on guitar hero.
wouldn’t sell very well??? yeah, i think there are alot of people who’d be too stupid to give it a chance. but i also know that ther’s at least as many people who would wait in line hours to get the game first.

    Posted: March 25th, 2008 at 6:35 pm

I love Guitar Hero 3 & all, but since I got it I was wishing that there would be a country version. One of my friends is more obsessed with Guitar Hero than I am and has every MAIN version of the game for PS2. I have a feeling that even he (if relesed as a MAIN version of the game) would get and love a country version. Ya, a lot of songs would be extreamly easy, that is sort of the typical “country” sound, but there are those artists that have reached out of that “sad” sound and into a more rock sound, such as Big & Rich, Brad Paisly, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean and others.
I mean seriously, to those of you trash talking the idea, have you herd ANY of Paisly’s songs, such as “Ticks” or even better, “Throttleneck” (a perfect guitar battle song BTW) he is one of the most amazing guitarists i have ever herd!!!
Imagine the thrill of “playing” a Big & Rich song like “Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy)”, “Loud” or “Radio”?!
Or maybe Miranda Lambert’s “Kerosene” or “Gunpowder & Lead” is more you’re taste.
Or maybe even Jason Aldean’s “Hicktown” (the song that got me hooked on country) or “Johnny Cash”.
And another thing before I leave this comment, many, MANY country songs can be (and have been) herd on more of a pop or hip-hop radio station, including but not limmeted to “Before He Cheats”(Carrie Underwood), “What Hurts The Most”(Rascal Flatts), & “Teardrops On My Guitar”(Taylor Swift).
I Find it absolutly amazing that manny people are not open to the fact that those songs are actually country songs.
And now, I will just leave it at that and hope and pray that there will soon be a country version of Guitar Hero.
And I for sure would stand in line for EVER to get it!!!!

we just have to make sure we keep it country. and classic too. NO POSERS LIKE BIG AND RICH. (OR THOSE OTHER HUNDRED GUYS THAT ARE FROM OTHER GENRES AND RECORD A COUNTRY ALBUM) (although Bon Jovi is ok.) maybe even some southern rock like Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Allman Brothers. I would pay any amount for a country gitar hero game. if red octane reds this: put in International harvester by craig morgan!

So a country version might not be for everybody but it would sell and there are some great riffs in country songs. Rock and country both slept with the blues and there’s a lot of similarities between the two. But how about a Canadian Guitar Hero? Rush, Matthew Good, Our Lady Peace, Arcade Fire, The Guess Who, Neil Young, Tragically Hip, Big Sugar, 54.40, The Tea Party, Treble Charger, Teenage Head, Skinny Puppy, Helix, Sum 41, Alexis on Fire, Finger 11, Billy Talent and Steppenwolf, (to name a few) would be awesome and I would have a chance of actually knowing some of the songs (although I did appreciate the Sex Pistols and the Dead Kennedys).

I have been hoping that this topic would be brought up. Country guitar hero would be a blast and it would sell. What all the rock lovers out there need to remember is the game is called “GUITAR” Hero, not rock hero. Artists like Brad Paisley and Keith Urban would be great for this genre of the game. Here is an example of a song someone made on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGN4DqPNXt0
This just proves that people are interested in a country game. There are also more videos of country guitar hero songs on youtube as well, check ‘em out.

I agree 100% because I have the guitar hero game myself, and i aadmit that it is really fun. The thing that just gets to me, though, is playing all those rock and etc. songs. I’ve heard tons of country songs that have better beats than those rock songs. Some country songs would be very fun to play on guitar hero.

I am a programmer at a country station and I’d like to throw in my two cents.

There are more country music radio stations in the USA than any other format. Thats a fact. Check Edison Media Research.

That being said, country music is all about the lyric and not so much the guitar solo. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some great guitar players in country music who could open a can or whoop-a$$ on any rocker you want to name.

Kieth Urban has already been mentioned. Others you should also listen to before passing judgment are Brad Paisley… Dwight Yoakam… Ricky Skaggs… Steve Warniner and Dierks Bentley. Brooks & Dunn know how to rock as do Toby Keith, Montgomery Gentry, Eric Chuch, Jason Aldean, Big & Rich and let’s not forget Hank Jr. and a whole slew of southern rockers.

There are guitar heroes in many music genres. Rock has basked in three versions of GH. What’s the harm of giving country its due? Rock was born of country after all.

I don’t see why they couldn’t make a country version of Guitar Hero. The gaming engine is already developed, I don’t see how it would be that difficult to convert some country songs into a format playable on Guitar Hero. They did it for Aerosmith songs and strictly ’80s songs, why not country music?

Country is awesome and would make an excellent guitar hero. Heck, I’ve been looking for a custom guitar hero with country in it, but haven’t had any luck yet.

Throw in some Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, and Brad Paisley and I would buy it.

And for everyone that says country music is for dumb, drunk hicks. What do you listen to? Eminem? 50 Cent? Dr. Dre? Those gang-banger wanna-be morons should be shot. Why don’t you try listening to some REAL music? Not something that tells you to kill people. Pick up a Garth Brooks album and start listening to something decent.

quote me on this. if they make a GH country version it would be the top selling hands down if they get the right songs and if the artists were smart they would jump all over it. it would bring a whole new age demographics, young and old, to buying their cd’s. bluegrass/country started every other version of music. TOP SELLER! PERIOD!

How is this for a start to a song set for a Country Western Guitar Hero?

What this world needs is a few more rednecks—Charlie Daniels
    Papa Loved Mama—Garth Brooks
    Eight Second Ride—Chris Ledoux
Third Rock From the Sun–Joe Diffie
South’s gonna do it again–Charlie Daniels
Rodeo Song: Gary Lee and the Showdowns (this might make the game rated M though)

These are just a few suggestions, and there are plenty more which would make a challenging (arguably more so than the current versions) experience for a Guitar Hero player.

Until then, however, I’ll probably buying the Metallica Version next year to keep myself busy.

    Trace Adkins - Swing
Brooks And Dunn - Rock My World (Little Country Girl)
    Toby Keith - Whiskey Girl
Rascal Flatts - Me And My Gang
Big And Rich - Save A Horse Ride A Cowboy
Dwight Yokum - Fast As You
Alan Jackson - Mercury Blues, Summertime Blues
Blackhawk - There you have it
Joe Diffie - Third Rock From The Sun
Eddie Rabbit - Drivin my Life Away

Need I go on????? There are alot of good guitar songs for country to make a game. I for one, will be waiting for something like this!!!!!!

I won’t buy Guitar Hero for my kids because of the rock, I don’t want to hear it and I don’t want them to like it or get used to it.

I agree that guitar hero should go country. Ive grown up listening to country my whole life along with alot of my friend. When you think about it not every one enjoys rock as much as they do country music. Instead of playing music on Guitar Hero like Foghat, The Who, Metallica, and all those other rock legends, why not trow George Strait, Toby Keith, Brooks n Dunn, Keith Urban, Randy Travis, Lonestar, Josh Turner, Kenny Roggers, Tracy Bryd, and all the other country artist out there into the mix?

Sad…Rock Band beat Guitar Hero with the country songs…I have Guitar Hero, but would get Rock Band, just because they are actually bringing out country songs. There are only the following 5, but at least they are giving it a chance…
The line-up includes Brad Paisley’s ‘Mud on the Tires,’ ‘Hillbilly Deluxe’ from Brooks & Dunn, ‘Sin Wagon’ from the Dixie Chicks, Dierks Bentley’s ‘Free & Easy (Down the Road I Go) and Miranda Lambert’s ‘Gunpowder & Lead.’

firstly my name is not meaning something inappropriate its just my name on every website except my email

but secondly i am a fan of gutiar hero 3 i have it and i am also a big fan of country (the second beats out the other) my friends all hate country and i read on google that they wont make a country one because “it wont sell a lot” but i think it is just someone who doesnt like country and also i saw that some people are actually modifying the game to put on country songs (but i dont because it is probbly illigal so i DONT reccomend doing it) but anyway it was on youtube if you are intrested go to youtube and look up “mr.policeman on gh3″ it will come up and i think they wont do it because the songs are “too hard” but if they made that game i would suggest they let you play as brad paisley (because i am a big fan) and also put some new some recent but not new and some oldies on it and if they made it i would buy it (my dad said that he wouldnt play gutiar hero 3 because he doesnt like the songs on it and i asked him if they make a country gutiar hero if he would play it he said he’d try he is 50 so he doesnt like video games) sorry for being rambly i just like this topic i LOVE country music!

I’m a complete guitar hero addict, and I was born and raised on country music. I love all kinds of music, including rap, raggae, rock, alternative, even techno. I sing along with all the guitar hero songs, and I even knew 95% of them before they made it on the game. I’d love to play a gh with country music! Just last night I realized how fun it would be to play Lookin For a Good Time by Lady Antebellum. Not all country music is about beating your wife. That’s just a stereotypical thought in the mind of someone that obviously is completely mentally incapable of looking outside their own little world. If they can make a hit movie off the life of Johnny Cash, would it really be that bad if they made a guitar hero? If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. Its as simple as that. I’m 16 years old, and obviously have more sense than some of these morons such as “country sux”. If you’re going to act like you’re all knowing, at least use proper grammar because you definately don’t help your case.

But, I gave it a whirl, and it was quite fun. However…I am not a huge fan of most rock music, and I didn’t know 90% of the songs available. I have listened to country music for 20 of the 24 years I have been alive, and I would LOVE a country version of GH! My hubby would too, cause then I would actually play with/against him!

But now I cant get away from it. LOL… I’m 31 years old I grew up listning to NWA, Easy E,Dr. Dre, Snoop, ect. Still do. That was my favorite music for ever still is. Old school rap. But I like classic rock as well love my GH 3 And legends. Now country is also my favorite I like both of them about the same. I went to Kenny Chesney Poets and Pirates Tour last summer and it was great. We go every year for the past 3 years. I didn’t realy care for Keith Urban till I saw him live. WOW!!!!!!!!! He is awsome on the guitar. I’d pay to go see him again no doubt about it. He changed my mind. He is one of my favorite artists now…. Anyway sorry to get off point. I’d love to be able to play some of his awsome songs on GH. To the person who was bashing new country like Big and Rich they are good artists as well. I love the old stuff too though. Like Waylon and Willie George Jones. THEY NEED TO MAKE A COUNTRY VERSION I’D BE WAITING IN LINE TO BUY IT LIKE IT WAS BLACK FRIDAY LOL…..Thanks everybody…

I have been hoping for a long time for Guitar Hero to go country…and even for a “RockBand” (or whatever they’d like to name it) to go country. Yes, a LOT of the recent country artists have songs that would lend the same types of difficulty experienced in the Guitar Hero games. But, just as Guitar Hero has some old and some newer, I think a country version should feature some old along with the new. I’d like to see a Guitar Hero expert keep up with a song like “Country Boy” by Ricky Skaggs. Guitar Hero games are about skill as well as the music. Country music is not all “twang” like it is often stereotyped. Just look at the pop stars who have covered country songs on their own albums.
Whether you like country music or not, there is still a LARGE number of people (young and old) who do. So, why not offer something for everyone?

So far I’ve downloaded “Me and My Gang” and “Hillbilly Deluxe.” Me and My Gang is pretty hard on medium for me but hopefully I’ll build up to it. Also there is “Ticks” and a couple of other songs available. I think Jason Aldean’s “She’s Country” would be a great song to play.

If this game ever does get made I hope they actually get some people who know the history of country music to make this game, and keep it country.

I think it is funny when people get on here and say people who listen to and who play country music are dumb rednecks. when country people are some of the most hard working Americans in the country. I have yet to hear of a country artist “Beating there wife,” i have heard of more metal heads, rockers, and rap artist getting into trouble than a country artist. I also don’t understand why someone would get on to a CMT website and bad mouth country music, country music lovers don’t go onto death metal sites to start fights with people. it angers me to know that people are so narrow minded that they cant except something that is different. if you don’t like a certain type of music that is fine, its disrespectful and narrow minded to trash talk something other people do like, and that is a perfect example of whats wrong with these generations that are growning up these days. i would rather have my child to think of a hard working “redneck” as a hero than some drug using sports star or violent metal, rock, rap artist. i hope they do make a guitar hero country edition and if not maybe rock band will make one. i think they would sell massive amounts of copy’s more than enough to make a profit. as long as they keep Guitar Hero-country edition country and not poppy they should do pretty good sale wise i think. personally i’m kinda getting sick of all the rock songs in guitar hero, after awhile they all start to sound the same. lets try something different.

I have been saying they should make a Guitar Hero/Rock Band Country game ever since they put the first country songs on Rock Band (Don’t have GH:WT). They are great songs to play/sing and contrary to what a lot of people have said on here, they are not easy to play. Most of the songs are harder than most of the other songs in the setlist. Sure there is a majority that listens to rock and whatnot but a lot of those people also like country and would still enjoy a country version.

listen, I think its an awesome idea to have a country GH… The ones of us who live in for example, Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky, that actually listen to music that we can understand the words to, want a game just as equal as the ppl who listen to rock, and things like that. Yes, it probably wouldn’t sell as great as the others, but that’s only because the country in ppl has been taken out as the time has come, just like the bible has been taken out of schools. They finds something they like better; rebellious, and with the message they want to hear.

I’m not here to give a lecture, I’m just giving my opinion. If I offended anybody, I’m sorry. I just feel like us country people should be treated just the same as the others

I also think you should be able to use the drums and mic if we have Rock Band or anyother game that has them. And really… Sold sepretly or buy the game with a country style guitar! That would be wicked!

first…maybe instead of mastering GAC power chords posters should master literacy(good god does anyone know how to spell anymore?)…and two: let’s face it, Nashville now embraces what they denounced for years, Country ROCK and all the new fans have been gained by finally “going electric” whilst retaining that ultra-rightwing wrongheaded machismo attitude which should have been stomped out with the Civil War. Country rejected rock and now every middling player pretends a fake southern accent to cash in on lazy listeners, hell, maybe a Bluegrass Heroes is called for but Country Heroes, HA!!!!!

btw, Miranda Lamberts’ band DOES rock, and her songs aren’t insipid either, sadly this is NOT Typical
