Taylor, May I Please Have Back My Diary?
I got out of school a little early one Friday afternoon. (Good thing since my mascara had completely run down my face from crying and I looked a total mess.) My ex-boyfriend Drew, who had dumped me a couple weeks prior (I swear he had horns), laughed and made fun of me until I broke down and cried at school. By the time I got home I was so mad I was fuming with anger. So, I wiped my tears, grabbed his picture and a handful of matches. Within minutes, Drew's ashes were melting down the sink.
Seems funny how Taylor Swift continues to write the stories from my high school past. Let's compare coincidences shall we? She had a Drew. (Remember, the one who caused her a few famous teardrops?). Well, me too. He wouldn't let her drive his truck? Yep, me neither. (This was probably for the best since it took me a few tries to pass the driving test. Who knew running over a curb was automatic failure?) And now Swift's got a "Picture to Burn"? Strange, I burned Drew's nine years ago. Does she have my diary?
Her latest video for "Picture to Burn" brings me such vivid high school flashbacks. I can't count how many times my friends and I stalked Drew's truck. What girl is with him? He let her drive?! Oh, the nerve, that Drew. Yes, Swift's latest video sheds a comical light on a high school relationship gone wrong. I also like the fact that Swift walks the line of looking very sexy, but at the same time maintaining her innocence and capturing her youth.
Swift came to CMT and performed this song for Unplugged at Studio 330 back in 2006. As soon as she began to play, I could see and hear her genuine conviction. You could feel her story as she was singing. When asked about this particular song, she said, "'Picture to Burn' is a little bit of a kiss-off song. I really do try to be a nice person, but I'm brutally honest when I write songs. I guess this was just a venting song for me," she smiled.
Well, the venting has really paid off. In fact, sometimes I feel like I should thank her. It almost seems like she's venting for me in a way. As much as I enjoy listening to her music, I seem to always somehow relate to her stories. It's peculiar how similar our high school experiences were. I'm sure next I'll hear about how she was ridin' shotgun with her hair undone in the front seat of his car. ... Wait a minute.
