Vince Gill Likes Love Songs, Especially Sad Ones
Vince Gill can make women swoon when he sings, but many of his most beautiful songs aren't exactly romantic.
"I like love songs but I like the blues side to music the best. I like love songs but I prefer to hear them be sad," he admitted recently to CMT Insider. "I bet if I took all of my songs, I know that 70 to 80 percent of them would probably be a little more melancholy and a little more on the blues side, rather than, 'Hey, look at me, aren't I in love? Isn't everything perfect?' That's just not as appealing to me as that angst. I think that creative people always have that turmoil, and I know I do. I'm always drawn to that. That's why I love bluegrass so much because they can kill people in their songs. They really like 'em dark."
Many of the songs he's written over the years can break your heart, such as "When I Call Your Name," "Never Knew Lonely," "No Future in the Past" and "Worlds Apart." While those aren't exactly perfect for the Valentine's Day mix-tape, you can't go wrong when he's crooning "I Still Believe in You," "Look at Us" and "If You Ever Have Forever in Mind."
"I wanted to be a songwriter as bad as I wanted to be a guitar player and as bad as I wanted to be a singer," he says. "I think more, because people said I wasn't as good at that, and that was a great motivator for me -- to hear that they didn't think my songs were very good. In those early years, I don't know that they were very good, but it sure inspired me to try harder and work harder and massage those songs and find great melodies and things worth singing."
