Miranda Lambert -- Bottled and Ready to Drink

Posted: February 6th, 2008 at 2:06 pm  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

When I heard Miranda Lambert had slapped her name on a few bottles of wine, I knew exactly what it would taste like. Moonshine.

I've had moonshine, and it's awful. Like nail polish remover mixed with rubbing alcohol. Surely, a woman who sings about killing ex-boyfriends would only make the strongest wine possible, legal or not. But when the UPS man brought me a shipment of Lambert's stuff, I was surprised to find it was very good. Since I'm a music critic, though, I didn't trust myself to become a wine critic overnight. So I enlisted some friends who are much better at pinpointing a wine's pros and cons. After a few glasses, though, how many cons are there, really?

(I should tell you, too, that this wine tasting came at the end of a snow day. With all the schools closed, we'd all spent the day shoveling, lacing up ice skates, pulling sleds out of the garage and making cup after cup of hot chocolate. So these were much-deserved glasses of wine.)

Our first dilemma was what to serve. I mean, what is the proper pairing with a Kerosene? And what would complement the robust flavor of her Red 55? These are not wine-snob wines, so we went with the one dish that goes with everything: hot chili cheese dip. (The recipe is listed below.)

One sip and we all agreed the Red 55 was our favorite. It's a cab-merlot named after Lambert's first truck. It's hearty and full-bodied, which explains why we kept our glasses full. Some of us, though, preferred the Kerosene, which is described as a Blanc du Bois.
It's dry, like a chardonnay, but has a nice sweet side. It reminded us of a wine cooler -- but more grown-up.

There are six wines in her private label collection, all from the Lou Viney Winery down in Texas. We couldn't taste every one, but I think we drew some important conclusions about the wines. It's like the vintners just bottled all the zest, spice and flavor of Lambert herself. That, any fan can drink in.

Recipe

Spread 8 ounces of cream cheese on bottom of pie plate. Top with one can of ChilliMan chili. Sprinkle with one big handful of shredded cheddar and bake for 25 minutes at 350 degree. Serve with Fritos Scoops.

Very great description! I’m going to get me some now…I’m not a wine drinker, but this sounds very appealing…not that I doubted it would be, but I was hesitant!
